I recently noticed white blobs in my Yorkies urine, looked it up and realised it means protein which could mean kidney problems. She's almost 5 years old, so not old by any means.
I took her to the vets yesterday who tested her urine and sure enough she had alot of protein in it. She took a blood sample and that was that. She didn't actually examine my dog at all, I expected her to at least give her the once over.
Anyway, got a call this afternoon from her saying the blood tests are back and are normal. Brilliant news, I think! She says to take her in for an injection because despite the blood test results she does have protein in her urine which needs dealing with. So I took her back today for the injection.
The vet had a trainee in the room with her, who was there yesterday as well. She starts talking to the trainee and it went something like this.
"Now this a good example for you to learn from. This dogs blood tests are normal but that doesn't mean there isn't a major problem with her kidneys. I had a cat in once who had a tumour the size of an orange on its kidneys but its blood tests were normal. So there could be a serious problem with this dog despite the negative blood tests results. So you can't always trust blood tests ha ha ha."
Erm hello??? I am in the room with my dog. I have spent the last 24 hours worried sick that my dog has kidney failure and may ultimately have to be put to sleep. Then I get told by her that her blood tests were fine, and I take that as meaning my dog is going to be ok. Then I have to learn that she may not be fine at all, but I'm not told this by the vet, I get this info by listening to her talking to her bloody trainee!
I am furious and really don't want to set foot in there again, she is supposed to be a vet who should understand how much we worry about our pets and show a little sensitivity, not be more interested in her trainee!
But can I change vets easily? this current vet obviously has her blood test results, I am supposed to go back in 2 weeks to have her urine checked again and I don't know how easy it would be to take her somewhere else. I have spent over £100 since yesterday and am also worried that a new vet would want to start from scratch so I would have to pay out again for what's already been done, if that makes sense! Money isn't the main thing, I want her to have good care, but I can't lie and say money doesn't matter at all!
Any ideas?
