There has been a bit of an argument between Tyler and the Sky Sports management.

But the main reason he was doing the Newcastle game today was that his contract doesn't allow him to do live games on Saturdays, unless Boxing Day falls on a Saturday.

Martin Tyler is indeed the best of a very good bunch at Sky. But I always used to like listening to Ian Darke on Monday Night Football. Reminds me of when we first got Sky.

Reminds me of some classic nights up to 4am waiting for the traditional Las Vegas farce.

A very good commentator in my opinion.

I think martin (a fellow woking fan) has been demoted I heard on talkSPORT before xmas that Darkey was taking over.

Im not if ariusuk is 100% right though martin has done a number of saturday games this year (the 5.15 ones not on prem plus mainly) eg Man U v Norwich right at the start of the season plus others Palace v Arsenal is one where I definitely remember him commentating.

I think Darke is good but martin and andy are SKY especially for big games. Perhaps this will be like the period in the mid nineties where Davies took over from motty.

I am sure he was on yesterday, usually Martin commentates live for TWI on 3pm matches, (BTW the commentators are actually the same as Football First), then we paupers watch the match that was covered live zillion laters later.

Then he commentates for Sky Sports on a Sunday, then he is on again on a Monday night again commentating live for TWI with a co-commentator(usually Robbie Earle).

Which makes me wonder, who exactly pays the commentator their wages, Sky or the FAPL?

all a bit strange, unless he's ill he's clearly been demoted, also a bit strange that Darke has come from the wilderness to take over the main live games again.

My own opion is that Martin Tyler and Andy Gray are the best 2 in the business. Watching the Premiership games on Sky isnt the same without them together!

I've only had Sky a couple of years and I've always associated Darke only with boxing so it's a bit strange having him do the football!

How olds Tyler?

As steve1977 said, it always used to be Tyler on Sunday, Darke on Monday...

...but that was in the days when Sky only showed live games on Sundays and Mondays.

Apparently the rift is due to Martin demanding that he gets to do the big games: He wants to do the Arsenal / Chelsea / Man Utd / Liverpool games, even if they don't fall as games which he would normally commentate as part of his contract.

But Vic Wakeling thinks Martin is getting big-headed. People subscribe to Sky to watch the football, not to listen to Martin Tyler.

...and rumour has it that Sky have already signed Tyler's replacement. The problem is, this "replacement" (who may be a Derby County fan) can't leave his current employer until after the 2006 World Cup.

what is his contract, to commentate on the main sunday game and, if they are showing one, the saturday game? because for the first half of the season that's what happened.

can't think of too many big games he's missed out on this season tbh, only ManU v Liverpool at Old Trafford on a Monday night springs to mind.

the saturday game at Anfield was strange in that Ian Paine was shunted aside for the first time this season and Keys put in his place.

Me and my mate was commenting on this, just the other day.
We noticed that Ian Darke was commentating and thought it was strange as Martin Tyler usually does the live sky premier league games (apart form Rob Hawthorne on mondays) and that Ian Darke hadn't done a game in ages!
I thought Tyler was ill or something but he was definitely commentating on Newcsatle vs. Southampton game on footie first.
I hope that sky stick him him back on the live games soon! It just isn't the same without him!!!

Ian Darke has always been commentating for TWI, even though he hasn' until very recently for Sky.

He is actually a lot less knowledgeable about football than plenty of other commentators.

Plus, he is obviously heavily pro-Arsenal.

In the Arsenal-Chelsea game, when Arsenal scored, he said "Take that Chelsea!"

Plus if you watch Arsenal play Manchester United for instance, you will notice that he wildly celebrates Arsenal goals but clams up when United score.

I think that plenty of other people have noticed this and complained, forcing Sky's hand.

The Arsenal - Man U game that was 3-2 a few years back (so far Sheringham played I think) sealed that verdict for me.

The most cringe like commentary I have heard from Tyler was when Newcastle beat my beloved ManU 5-0 some years ago when Philip Albert chipped Schmeichel.

As it crossed the line Tyler screams "and Fileeeep
Alllllbearrrrrrrr!!!!"

I get sick everytime that is shown. Hopefully he is gone for good and Ian Darke stays...!!!

The Sky 'B' list does not impress me at all. It's shocking that they relegate Alan Parry to Prem Plus obscurity. This indicates to me that Parry is behind Rob Hawthorne (one word: bland) in the pecking order.
"There could be danger here...!"

Martin Tyler is a very good commentator, punctuating his performances with screams. They all do it.
If you try and ignore all the Jonathon Pearce shouts, in between you'll note he is a very knowledgable man. If you've read any of his (non-News of the World) journalistic efforts, you'll see that is obvious.

Clive Tyldesley was thrown to the front of ITV's line up almost by accident. When Parry left ITV for Sky, they needed a Brian Moore deputy. Barry Davies and John Motson were never going to leave the BBC Premier League and FA Cup safe haven, and Tyldesley was at the time rumoured to be a bit miffed at being assigned to the basketball at Atlanta 96.
Then of course, Moore announced his retirement followed by his sad death a couple of years later. ITV hasn't been the same since.

I find it sad that Barry Davies has all of a sudden backed out of football. By a long way he is the best commentator out there in any sport (that he does or otherwise), favourite quote has to be during a drab Sportsnight UEFA Cup special one Thursday night, a completely boring 0-0 featuring Aston Villa in Scandinavia somewhere, the pictures failed. "I understand you've lost the pictures back at home. I'll try and describe the action as best I can, but I can assure you, you're not missing much."

In a perfect world I'd like to see Martin Tyler and Barry Davies leading the two terrestrial networks, if they still had a considerable amount of live football. If Tyler is to break free from Sky (and this isn't just some sabbatical), then move Alan Parry to the top chair. Can't beat experience in my view. Oh for the days of Brian Moore ("He's in there!") and Big Ron live from Athens with another Manchester United Champions' League match.

lol, this thread is great and sure brings back memories! Lets have Elton Welsby back on ITV!!

Martin Tyler and Barry Davies seem similar to me although Tyler seems to like the game more and not make snide comments.

Infact, everyone on the BBC is like that. You just dont get the image that they like football, instead they use every opportunity to take the michael. Thankfully John Motson isnt like this and neither is that guy who does the footie on a sunday evening.

Ian Darke though is fantastic, I love the way he used to (not sure if he still does) mess up his words when the games getting exciting! I remember Andy Cole scoring for United when they played Coventry away, in what was an extremely important game. Anyway, he went off on one getting his words mixed up, not knowing what he was saying! He reminds me of Motty in that he commentates from the heart.

Well, at least for tonight. He is on Sky with Andy Gray for the FA Cup game. Listened to them for five minutes and you wouldn't be aware of any issue between them - they are getting on just fine. So who knows what's next for him?

Good performance by Tyler tonight.

As for the memories of where all these commentators used to be, the most endearing thing about ITV was the athletics on a summer Friday night, Alan Parry in situ for the Golden League meetings (as he is now, well done Sky for keeping this tradition alive). It was good to see him being kept busy, when Brian Moore was off on holiday.

Underrated understudies include Peter Brackley, poor soul, being made to try and stare through all the firecracker smoke like the rest of us on some small screen in a studio in London whilst commentating on Football Italia. Gary Bloom also many appearances here, where is he now?
They use the perennial free agent of Local ITV and MOTD now on Eurosport, John Roder. Okay, but can no way stand up in the face of the past masters.

But you have to come back to Barry Davies - WC98 scream moment;
"Nicely pulled down by Bergkaaaaaaaaaaaaamp! OH! What a goal!" He's been excited before, but not quite as much as then.

"Look at his face, just look at his face!"

Sky have decided to release some of the work load of Tyler by brining Darke in for a few games. Tyler will do the Sunday matches and it would seem Darke is doing Saturdays. With Sky having Champion League games now it was thought Tyler was been over-worked. I like Darke. He is a very good commentator both in football and boxing. I would say maybe I prefer him to Tyler but thats just my opinion. One guy mentioned SKy have signed Tyler's replacement but he cant work until after 2006 World Cup, I hope its Clive Tyldsley at ITV. He is top class.
