Never mentioned for 53 years. Now out of the blue comes this mysterious recreation ground with an even more mysterious name. The Red Rec! Where exactly is it? And why does Deirdre go there in the middle of the night dog walking? And the biggest mystery of all. Why is it called The Red Rec? As it will probably never be mentioned again we will never know!

The Red rec has been mentioned many a time, and featured in some stories, wasnt there a threat once that it would be bulldozed and someone climbed up a tree in protest?

Oh right. I have only been watching Corrie since 2005. I cant remember it ever being mentioned in the 8 years I have been watching. But it may well have been.

It's been mentioned so many times. I'm sure we have seen it too, Didn't Emily climb a tree there once during one of Spider's protests

It has definitely been mentioned a few times since 2005. Usually people with kids will say they are taking their kids down the red rec to go and play

The Red Rec has has been mentioned many, many times over the years, and I would imagine that Rec is short for recreation ground, not sure what the Red bit means. I did wonder why Deirdre was walking there at night herself,, it only emphasizes the fact that Ken is missing, as he always walked the dog. Deidre seems to be getting shoved into every storyline these days, I've noticed.

I don't know what's more laughable? Someone who's been watching Corrie for 8 years claiming that the Red Rec has never been mentioned in the entire history of the programme? Or the programme makers expecting us to believe that Manchester's magnificent Heaton Park should double up as the Red Rec? surely they could've found some smaller park somewhere in the suburbs of the city?

As many FMs have already said, the Red Rec has been a feature of Coronation Street since the 1960s.

Evidence:

Mentioned at Christmas 1967 where a Rovers vs Flying Horse tug-of-war took place.

Hilda mentions the Red Rec in 1969.

Interestingly, there's a 'Rec' in my town and is formally known as the 'Recreation Ground'.

It's not red, mind ...

There was a discussion about it on here a few months ago when some people thought it was called the "red wreck"

Yes that's it. It's definitely been mentioned thousands of times and seen on several occasions since the 90's. Not sure how you could have missed it really OP? Think it was where David collapsed a few weeks ago as well.

BTW, "Rec" is short for recreation ground, we have a "rec" near me as well.

Oh but that shot of Roy and Deirdre walking under a moonlit sky was totally worth it. Stunning.

We've got a Recreation Ground too, we call it the 'Recs.' It's the football stadium for the local team, not a park as such, but I think it might be a fairly common name for parks and sports fields.

I had better pay more attention! Yes I got that rec is short for recreation ground. I think it was because Deirdre said it two or three times that it stood out. But no I genuinely don't remember hearing it said before. Thanks for all the evidence that it is not such a mystery after all!!
