A change in Deidre?
Has anyone noticed a slight change in Deidre? Without Ken, it strikes me that they've tried to make her a more outspoken Blanche style character, whereas before she was a little more reserved, and more the voice of reason in her family (Traceyluv aside).
Anyone else noticed this? |

Yeah they are trying to make her the new Blanche, the trouble is without Ken around she just looks like a sad old lonely women who gets drunk which probably isnt the image the writers wanted.

I quite like the direction that Deirdre's going in.
I've not watched lots of episodes recently, but I could definitely see shades of Blanche coming through in Deirdre. I just hope that the writers remember to soften her character and let some vulnerability come through from time to time, which was why Blanche was such a well-loved character. Remember also that Blanche's extreme cantankerousness (is that a word?!) only really took hold between 1998 and her sad departure in 2009. Prior to that, while always being strong-willed and quick-tongued, she had quite a soft and caring side which she did show quite regularly. As they say, a lot of people become more grumpy in their old age. Given all that has happened to Deirdre over the years, she has every reason to say what she thinks about life and the world at large! |

Whatever happens with Ken, Deirdre needs to be built up and the unquestionable head of the Barlow household. Her relationship with Tracy needs to be shored up, as does her relationship with Peter. Seeing more of her with Amy and Simon would help too. Seeing Tracy receive the lion's share of Deirdre's sniping would certainly make her an idol among many on DS ![]() Also, Liz will be back soon, giving Deirdre a much-needed friend. I really, really hope that the production team move Liz in with Deirdre at No.1. That would be really fantastic. |

There's a definite danger of this, I agree dazza. The one scene I saw her in recently she was at the corner of the bar in the Rovers sniping into everybody's business. Typical Blanche, but it felt a bit more embittered and sad for Deirdre. They really need to ensure that Deirdre has a bit of warmth too.
