With year on year declines, will the soaps really still be on our screens in 10 years?

Yes.

Ten years is no time at all.

All the soaps that we are currently watching ( with the possible exception of the Australian ones) will still be with us in ten years time,I reckon.

Some reckon that EE will be gone within 10 years. It's already a shadow of its former self.

DS had an interview not so long ago with the Neighbours producer who said they're definetly having Neighbours for two years for special things for its 30th.

EE and Corrie will out live us all, not sure about ED, HO and Doctors, I would say at least one of them wont be here in 10 years time.

So not true... EE I expect to be axed in 10-15 years. Corrie... Probably 20-25.

I expect in the year 3020 when man have built spaceships and mastered faster-than-light travel, there will be people still watching EE and Corrie somewhere in the UK .
Though, with the way the EE's ratings are going, I wouldn't be surprised if it did get axed in 15 or 20 years.

That one will be gone....

EastEnders and Corrie will out live us. No doubt about that one.

How old are you? 65? Those on DS mid to late 20s will probably out live both EE and Corrie.

It'll be back before we know it, Dan. We've beat the first week, we can beat three more!

Fingers crossed. The Joke is. Fair enough for 2 weeks it's replaced by Wimbledon but the other two is just repeats

Doctors has been the best soap on the box for the last year (imo) and this time I am missing it more than ever. Damn the BBC for giving it 4 weeks off

Excluding Hollyoaks, the other three evening soaps consistently make up the ratings top 10's for BBC1 and ITV every week. The only shows to beat them are the likes of yearly event series like SCD, X Factor, The Voice, The Apprentice and I'm A Celebrity and these only run for a limited period each year. Unless the channels find other regular series that will pull in higher ratings than the soaps then the soaps are here to stay.

Hollyoaks doesn't figure in Channel 4's top 10 ratings often so it's possible that it could go in the next ten years but they may make their money back from tie ins, sponsorship and reruns on E4 so I wouldn't be too sure. The only other reason I could see any of the other soaps being dropped without being overtaken in ratings by another show, would be if ratings for all programmes on all stations dropped to figures that were so low that it was no longer cost effective to produce the soaps but I'd imagine they would pare down production costs as much as they could before they would let this happen (much like we've seen with the American daytime soaps being cancelled over costs and those that remain on air dropping big name cast members in order to save on salaries).

Corrie and Emmerdale will still be around.

Hollyoaks, I'm not sure - all it takes is a change of management, and bam - gone.

Waterloo Road - I think next year.

Eastenders - I give it 5-10 years. It can only must 7million for an exit, when Corrie with their big storylines get 9-11m. This Elstree set being closed in 2015 is the alarm bells ringing...

Doctors, Home and Away, Neighbours will still exist in one form or another - there is a demand for these. Casualty and Holby may go, but again there is a demand.

It was rented by the bbc; they have not renewed their license as yet, which expires in 2015.

The people who own it were trying to sell it iirc; meaning the bbc no longer want to make EE (there).

Eastenders and Coronation Street have lost something like nearly 30% of their average viewership since 2003. Emmerdale has faired better in that respect, but is still down more than 20%. I do not know the Iplayer statistics exactly, but they will not add a great deal to those figures.

Losing 20-30 percent of your viewership in 10 years in not a good business model, which ever way you look at it.

Another thing to consider: In 10 years people will be awaiting the Playstation 6 and X Box Three. Every television on the market will be a TV/PC combined. Broadband speeds will be better, streaming will be even better. TV channels and providers could be moving close to unbelievable competition.

Utter tosh unless you're 60 or over.

Rating declines have stabilised in the last few years though as everyone has digital tv and have realised that most of it is rubbish.

Of course The Archers has been going on far longer than any of them and I read somewhere that its been run ing now since 1951 and of course it's the oldest soap opera in the world and its my favourite.
Ian.
