Hollyoaks would have ended first as they seem to kill someone off every week!

They will carry on as long as they get viewers and seeing as 7 million odd still watch EEs and Corrie weekly I don't see them ending anytime soon.

I hope that's true . But for where I live I'm not holding my breath . So called.broadband speeds are pretty much the same as they were 10 years ago .
Its only a semi rural area
Nothing seems to have progressed .

Current line speed 1.1 Mbps
Which is why I'm trying to move .

I think Hollyoaks and Doctors might be gone by then.

I wouldn't be surprised if soaps get replaced with reality shows in 15 or 20 years. It seems they're taking over television. I loathe reality shows personally, so would hate that to happen.

I know if the money they get was pulled, Neighbours would be gone in a heartbeat. H&A is pretty safe.

My TV license will be "doing one" if that disaster ever happens. I watch little enough TV now to be honest and a lot of it is on Catch Up! I can't believe how popular reality TV shows are too, esp. amongst adults, kids you'd expect it to be - but a brainwashed nation it's fast becoming!

I blame Simon Cowell . I wish somebody would make him disappear . Joking aside, he's just part of a wider problem. But stopping Cowell's reality TV machine would go a long way to putting a stop to the business.

Lol, indeed. I agree, Guido. Pretty much all the western nations have been brainwashed by all this reality TV nonsense. So much so that it's become ingrained in to society. You have all these wannabe, Z-List celebrities wanting their 15 minutes of fame. You have to worry .

Good to know I have a fellow reality TV-hater here though .

I'm a reality show hater as well. Although i'm not a soap opera hater, as i do watch a number of them, i do think the number of all the weekly episodes of all the soaps should be greatly reduced, to just two episodes a week of at least all the UK soaps, like they once where.

Ah, hello there . Another reality TV hater .

Hmm, yeah, I can definitely see the number of soap episodes being reduced per week at some stage in the future. The storytelling in soaps has become quite decompressed because the writers these days have to spread out storylines across a whole week of episodes. If they were reduced, they might be able to keep the storylines tighter and faster if you get what I mean.

...and I love it, 12-13 minutes , six times a week is lovely, I love the fact that you can do other things whilst listening.

I'd say Hollyoaks will be gone soon.

Corrie, Emmerdale and Eastenders will still be there.

In 10 years time, ratings will be even lower but people will start to grasp that this is a trend that's been going since the 70s and understand that most people have moved on to on-demand television and overnights mean sod all. Until some new medium comes along and knocks television to the ground, the three main soaps will remain a staple of British television so I don't think it's out the realms of expectation to suggest they might outlive most of the members of this forum.

The people who own it were trying to sell it iirc; meaning the bbc no longer want to make EE (there).”

I posted this a while ago with a link to back it up. If you go to the Hertfordshire Councils website there is a section about up coming land free for development and it has the Elstree studios listed as being available from 2016. So it doesn't look like they can get a licence extension.

No one replied to my post on it for some reason.

The BBC must be doing stuff behind closed doors to locate a new site but they are leaving it rather late in the day.

I think a new Government licence fee review is happening in 2015 so perhaps its all hanging on that.

If ITV started getting in trouble i guess a last resort would be ditching one soap. Though how would you choose?

Clearly they would choose to ditch Emmerdale

Probably but I have written the last EE script for them. It features Reg Cox waking up in his chair. The past 28 years have been a bad dream - then he dies.

Yes I think Corrie, Eastenders and Emmerdale will still be here and maybe a new soap or two for us to chat about.

No soap is ever guaranteed to be safe in the future, look what happened to Brookie!

I'd suggest Corrie is still safe for at least another 10 years. Probably Emmerdale as well. EastEnders isn't what it once was but its still pulling in like 6-7million. But of the big 3 i'd say its the most unstable right now.

I think Hollyoaks and Doctors could be gone easily.

Neighbours rates poorly in Australia where is is now on a digital channel and ratings on Channel 5 aren't great , H&A ratings also low on Channel 5 ,but it still rates well in Australia (and in some other countries i believe) so we can assume as long as it carries on doing well down under it will be safe.

lets say the "big 2" CS + EE were to end , how do you think the last episodes of each would play out ?
