The most overrated and underrated actors/actresses in soap
Most underrated:
Lorna Laidlaw (Doctors): I think she's the best actress in the whole programme and always gives excellent performances as Mrs Tembe. Brilliant actress who deserves a lot of credit and recognition. Gillian Wright (EastEnders): I think many people only see Jean as Jean-the-nutjob, but Gillian Wright has given several fantastic performances in EastEnders and is always snubbed at award ceremonies etc. In my opinion she doesn't get the credit she deserves. Lorna Fitzgerald (EastEnders): Very talented young actress, and I think she's always overlooked for characters like Max, Tanya and Lauren as her best scenes are with these characters. Shona McGarty (EastEnders): I think she gives very good performances as Whitney e.g. during the prostitution storyline. She's never won an award as far as I'm aware. Charlotte Bellamy (Emmerdale): Great actress and to me, she's always overlooked for the likes of Debbie and Chas in the programme. Most overrated: Michelle Keegan (Coronation Street): I'm not doubting she can act, but I think people think she's better than she actually is because she's pretty. Alan Halsall (Coronation Street): I think he's a great actor, but during the abuse story I think people made out he's an acting god or something. He was brilliant during that storyline, but Natalie Gumede was miles better in my opinion. Jacqueline Jossa (EastEnders): I've expressed my feelings about her in about two other threads on this forum, but I just don't get the hype about her. I'd say she's probably the most overrated actress in soap. People describe her as an excellent actress and personally, I just don't see it. Emmett J. Scanlan (Hollyoaks): People are going to HATE and possibly slaughter me for this (please don't ) and I'm not saying he was a bad actor, but I just didn't get the whole Brendan hype. The character bugged me as he was just always there, in every episdoe. He's a very good actor, but... well, I suppose I just didn't get the character, so I suppose that means I didn't get the hype about the actor either. But like I said, I don't think he can't act, because he clearly can.

Overrated in EE are Jacqueline Jossa and Letitia Dean. HO , Dr Browning and Mercedes.
I think underrated actors are Darren and Nancy Osbourne, Dodger and Tony in HO . . EE are June Brown, Adam Woodyatt, Jamie Borthwick and Lindsey Coulson. |

Overrated: Jamie Borthwick is my main one! Everyone says he is one of the strongest actors, I do not get this AT ALL. I think he's awfully boring and sucks the life out of every scene he is in.
Jake Wood is another, I sometimes have trouble understanding him and his puppy dog facial expression gets on my nerves. |

Overrated - Letitia Dean
She over acts all her scenes, looks atrocious on screen especially in HD & is just a general pain in the arse as Sharon. GO AWAY |

Someone mind pointing me to where all these "dean is a great actress" threads are in order for her to be overrated? I must have missed them all. Just sounds like Sharon bashing under the guise of dean being overrated.
Or do people not understand what overrated means?? |

Am agreeing with Jamie Borthwick as being overrated, I don't get the appeal. I find the character changing from "Perfect Boyfriend" to "One of the lads" a bit too often as well.
I think Jaqueline Jossa is both sides of the spectrum. Recently I think she has been fantastic but before that, she was really bad for a long time. Her story with Joey was horrible but she convinced me she is an alcoholic. She has her ups and downs. I think Patsy Palmer is underrated as well, she is one of the best actresses in Eastenders in my opinion. |

Got to say imo both Emmett J. Scanlan and Jacqueline Jossa have been fantastic in both there roles I have really enjoyed there performances this year so I can't agree with the thread starter on that one

Michelle Keegan and Jacqueline Jossa are the most over-rated. I think their popularity is connected to how they look. Although I have to say JJ is better than MK.
Letitia Dean needs to let Sharon grow up. The helpless blonde act and simpering, breathy voice might have worked a few years ago but now it's ridiculous for a woman her age. Jamie Borthwick, Shona McGarty, Patsy Palmer and others have excelled in the past but haven't had the material recently. Alan Halsall was very good in the abuse SL but as the OP says Natalie Gumede was outstandingly good. Compare her acting to Halsall and especially the likes of Michelle Keegan. Chris Fountain is quite a good actor. Unfortunately, he has to play second fiddle to Corrie 'star' Michelle Keegan. |

Overrated
Jake Wooden - No expression, predictable delivery of (admittedly) predictable lines, same tired lazy actions (hands on hips, feet shuffling), mumbles his lines, puts little effort into his performances anymore. The character of Max is repulsive and highly overrated to boot. Jacqueline Jossa - No matter how many times people try to make out she's an exceptional actress it will never wash with me. Yes, she can act in a very limited capacity and has been above average on occasion, but she is no Lacey Turner and never will be. Also lumbered with a thoroughly unpleasant character to play. Jamie Borthwick - Boring performer. Not an ounce of nuance to his acting. The character is spineless and dull so maybe that's the problem. Lorna Fitzgerald - Giggling, snorting and guffawing are not traits I associate with good acting. Underrated I think everyone else gets the amount of praise/criticism they deserve. |

the cast of Emmerdale are extremely good on the whole and are under-rated (not on here, but are overlooked at awards ceremonies)- the likes of Jeff Hordley,Emma Atkins, Natalie J robb, John Middleton, Nicola Wheeler, Natalie anderson, Rik Makarem ( I still laugh at him having a birth app on his iphone), Sian Reese Williams, Chelsea Halfpenny, Chris Chittell , Lesley dunlop, Lucy Pargeter, Laura Norton, James Hooton and Zoe Henry all put in very good performances on a regular basis, and outstanding ones with decent stories
River city's cast are probably overlooked due to it only showing in Scotland, but nevertheless, I should mention the excellent Holly Jack, Una Mclean, Eileen Mccallum, Keira Lucchesi, Scott Ryan Vickers, Sally Howitt, Gary Lamont, Robin Laing (DCI Donald), Deirdre Davis, Paul-James corrigan, Garry Sweeney, and the wonderful Frank Gallagher (no not that one! He's the resident villain with a decent streak, Lenny Murdoch). |

With regard to the Emmerdale actors I think it's more to do who Emmerdale put up for the awards, I mean Charley Webb for best actress as well as who they give the storylines to. I mean instead of Debbie getting the whole Sarah storyline that should of gone to Nicola who would of done it much better.
I don't mind Charley Webb as an actress, but I don't know why they nominated her for the best actress this year - as you say there were other actresses who would have handled that story better, and were in a position to do so with young kids. Emma Atkins, Charlotte Bellamy, Nicola Wheeler, or Natalie Anderson would all have been fantastic and very sympathetic even when acting angry and bitter (as would be natural, given the story). They could even have made Samson the one who fell ill, and given a decent story to James Hooton. |

I dunno, I feel sorry for poor Jeff Hordley who always gets nominated and never wins, that must be a rotten experience.

Nicola would of been better and would of given her a good storyline along with Jimmy who have to be one of the best couples in Emmerdale. |

are you actually going to pretend there aren't legions of leticia dean fans on here that swear up and down that she's the best gift to soap? All that was ever posted (prior to her return) was "ronnie/tanya doesn't hold a candle to sharon". "They need to bring sharon back"."Leticia dean could out act sam off the screen" and all that malarkey. Now that she's returned and pooped the bed the fanatics have gone into hiding.
