Coronation Street - Percy Sugden
I really liked Percy Sugden it was sad he was axed. Bill Waddington was a great actor. He died in 2000 in real life, Percy would be 91 now if he is still alive, wonder if he and Emily still keep in contact. Would be nice if they mentioned in passing about these characters, or they receive a card from Percy.

I really liked Percy - I loved how he used to call the characters by their surnames, i.e Mrs Bishop, Mrs Fairclough, etc, except for Ken, who was always Kenneth, and Alf, who was Councillor Roberts.

Be great if he popped back for one episode and locked horns with Norris, I mean - Mr Cole.

Percy Sugden alias Eric/China is living over the road from me and is alive and well. He is the spitting image of Percy and we call him this. Percy is going down the pub and winding his way back home, just a friendly josh.

![]() Percy and his flat cap was a proper Lancashire man, he always reminded me of my Grandad. |

Percy was at the top of Brian Parks hitlist when he took over as producer, along with Derek Wilton. Although Derek was killed off so could never come back Percy wasn't so really he could have returned in the future if subsequent producers wanted to bring him back. I guess none of them did

After reading these posts I can't decide if the actor who played Percy is still alive or deceased.
Can someone enlighten me please? |

I really liked Percy - especially when he played hard to get with Phyllis who was always trying to get off with him
I remember him as very "correct" and wouldn't stand for lax standards. When he disagreed with someone (which was quite often) he never insulted them directly but walked away with an "I'll bid you good day...." after making his point I seem to remember he was very unhappy with the plot lines and general direction The Street was going and not unhappy about leaving the cast |

The character Percy would be 91 as his date of birth is 8/4/1922. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Sugden The actor Bill Waddington would be 97 as his date of birth is 10/6/1916 |

My memory's a tad hazy -- I remember Percy went to Mayfield Court on Ken's car, but I wasn't sure why he left. Was it because he couldn't stand the Battersbys?

Percy
even though Bill Waddington died in 2000 and would have been 99 if he was alive now. percy would be 93 now so it's still possible that Percy could still be alive. I think they should finally write in a death storyline for him (obviously off screen as B.W has already been dead since 2000). Maybe Emily could get a phone call then attend his funeral. I think it's sad when it's like some past charchers never existed.

It's a shame there's not a similar character on Corrie nowadays, Norris is entertaining but doesn't command the same respect. I once heard his kind referred to as Genteel Working Class which is very fitting. |

I think there should be a storyline were we find out when he died( that's if he is dead because I know B.W is dead but never a mention of Percy dying).

Did he get axed after the actress who played Phyllis (his main sparring partner) died?

It's been too long to kill him off now, although I can well imagine Percy hanging in there until his 90s!
Percy was very much of a certain 'type' which you don't get on soaps nowadays - the old soldier who spends much of his time criticising the younger generations. You can't do his sort of character now as the war was so long ago - even Emily and Rita were just children then. I've come to appreciate Percy more over the years. As insufferable as he was, he played an important role, in some ways replacing Albert Tatlock (although they were very different). He was opinionated, principled, and always stood his ground. His attempts to escape from Phyllis Pearce were a lot of fun, and his relationship with Emily (always "Mrs Bishop" to Percy) was similar in some ways but much more layered than her relationship with Norris. |

Percy's exit storyline was the one where Les Battersby was sneaking through the loftspace into Emily and Ken's houses and moving things around - Percy became convinced Emily had a drink problem and when she wouldn't admit it decided it would be better if he moved out. When the truth about Les being behind all the strange goings-on came out, Emily decided not to tell Percy - it seemed like she didn't really want to give him the opportunity to move back in.
I thought Percy's last months on the show were quite sad, Bill Waddington was obviously unhappy with the direction the show was taking under Brian Park and this comes across on screen - all the life seemed to have been sucked out of Percy, his whole presence and delivery of lines changed completely - it felt almost like Bill was showing up for work and just reading his lines as Bill rather than playing Percy. He seemed completely resigned to the fact that Corrie had come to the end of an era and neither Percy's nor Bill's face fit any more. As for giving Percy an on screen funeral, I don't really see the point - Percy was always a very singular character with no children or family (except a rather flimsy link to the Websters through a neice who was invented purely as a way of writing Bill Webster out and never seen again) and his death would have very little impact on the current set of characters. For the little we see of Emily, it's quite plausible Percy could have passed away and Emily could have attended the funeral off screen. Then again, would Emily even bother to go to his funeral - she was always rather cutting and condescending towards him (in the same way as she is to Norris) and, after the way he left, didn't seem to have kept in contact. One of my favourite Percy stories was where he was trying to get to the bottom of a burglary at the Wiltons - nobody was really convinced by his efforts, but he ended up catching the burglar and being (briefly) a hero! |
