I know BBC Radio has a secondary platform that enables them to broadcast simultaneous games and talkSPORT doesn't, which works in the BBC's favour, but personally I'd prefer to see such clashes being divided out reasonably evenly with as many games on national analogue stations as possible. While I welcome the Premier League offering Swansea's games at West Brom and Crystal Palace (which talkSPORT wouldn't have been able to cover despite them kicking off in one of their timeslots) to BBC Radio, I would like to see these things work both ways and for talkSPORT then to be granted commentary rights to Cardiff v Spurs when Radio 5 Live are covering the Manchester derby. Having said that, perhaps talkSPORT were offered this game, but knowing that the Manchester derby would command far more attention they decided to decline using up an additional pick on it and opted to stick to their usual schedule instead.”

Its a situation that will crop up again in the coming weeks. Looking at the fixtures it seems as if there's a deliberate move to allign the Swansea and Spurs matches on Sundays after the Europa League with the already scheduled TV matches.

Rob's Twitter account confirms that you are right Rufus. He presented UEFA.com's Matchday Live on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thanks for posting this information Jimmy, it's good to read the details of UEFA.com's Champions League audio service, which I have enjoyed listening to when I have caught it in the past. Interesting to hear that they only had two featured matches on each night during matchweek one, as I know in the past (certainly when they used to do a round-by-round podcast) they used to have commentators at all eight matches on each night of the group stage. Perhaps they still do, as I know they at least used to supply their commentaries as a world feed for international TV broadcasters, but don't call upon everyone involved on their live online audio service.

Speaking of Twitter, I notice that one of the UEFA.com regulars from past seasons Chris Parrott has amended his Twitter biography to reflect that he can be heard on talkSPORT among others as a freelancer. I've not heard him on there and don't think he's debuted on the station yet (unless he's done something for Extra Time that I've missed), but it would make sense if he joins their reporting team and/or the talkSPORT Live commentary team, seeing as he has commentated on Swansea City games for their sister station Swansea Sound in the past.

Just a note on this - when Arsenal went 2-0 up in Marseille, talkSPORT switched their focus to Chelsea v FC Basel for the remainder of the evening, with Basel having gone 2-1 ahead moments before they crossed to Stamford Bridge. John Roder commentated solo on the last five minutes and stoppage time.

Valencia CF v Swansea City (UEFA Europa League Group A)

BBC Radio Wales - Steffan Garrero (studio host) Rob Phillips and Leighton James (All frequencies)
BBC Radio Cymru - Owain Llyr (studio host) John Hardy and Iwan Roberts (nationwide commentary)

- - - - - - - - - -

On Saturday, Owain has just said that as Swansea and Vincent Tan's Dragons play on the Sunday, there'll be commentary of The New Saints v Bangor City, rather than of Newport County at Exeter City or Wrexham's game against Aldershot on Radio Cymru. There'll also be regular updates from Lord's Cricket Ground (Glamorgan play Notts in the CB40 final).

He (Owain) will also be commentating on Crystal Palace v Swansea City on Sunday with Iwan Roberts. As Vincent Tan's Dragons also play that day I won't be listeninig to know who'll be there on the match afterwards.

Ian, I take it from the lack of a mention in your post above that Swansea Sound aren't covering the Swansea game? I'd also be interested to know if Wish FM are doing commentary on Wigan, I remember Andy Rimmer saying on here that he felt it was likely they'd do so on their European away games given that they provide the commentaries for the club's Latics Player service.

Jim Beglin commentating for 5 Live at Anfield tomorrow - interesting and a good choice for me! John Murray is doing Norwich V Villa instead - unbelievable! Alan Green and Mike Ingham doing the Manchester derby - with Robbie Savage again, don't understand how he gets all these big games! I don't think he's bad but think there are far better.

5Live have lost their top co-comm in Graham Taylor while he recovers from surgery & Jimmy Arnfield is winding down too.

Lawro isn't being used much & Chris Waddle is only coming back in following ESPN's demise.

Jim Beglin could be a big plus if he suits radio and develops a good understanding with other commentators

Ten years ago he was a regular on Five Live, even when he was on ITV most weeks.

Thanks. Just to note, BBC Radio Manchester's co-commentator at Wigan's Europa League game Paul Kendrick is the Latics correspondent from the Wigan Evening Post and Wigan Observer.

talkSPORT will be providing commentary on Steaua Bucharest v Chelsea in the second round of Champions League group games on Tuesday 1st October. I've not heard this confirmed yet, but I'd expect them to cover Shakhtar Donetsk v Manchester United the following evening, which would be in keeping with their policy from the past few seasons of opting to pick up commentary rights to the away games of British teams in Europe.

Looking to next week, talkSPORT will do a Capital One Cup Around the Grounds show on Tuesday before doing commentary on Manchester United v Liverpool on Wednesday. That game will also be carried by talkSPORT Live.
