I don't have any strong feelings either way about Radio 5 Live's use of their three person commentary system, but what I really am at a loss to understand is their decision to use Robbie Savage as summariser whenever they have broadcast commentary on Aston Villa, at least on non-Saturday games, this season.

It's not so much that Savage is a former Birmingham City player who was renown for his involvement in his fair share of dust ups in Second City derbies, but last season he really drew the ire of Villa fans when he made his cocky and ultimately wrong prediction that they were relegation certainties. So for Radio 5 Live to continually call upon him as summariser on Villa games strikes me as being a case of shooting yourself in the foot big style - they are rendering their coverage unlistenable to Villa supporters and even neutrals like me, who would have considered tuning in to their coverage on Monday had they used a more neutral co-commentator but find Savage to be a massive turn-off.

Given his spells at both clubs, Savage would have been a much more appropriate choice to co-commentate on Radio 5 Live's live commentary on Leicester City v Derby County in the Championship on Friday night...oh wait.
I don't see the issue, Savage's prediction last season of them going down wasn't too far off and I've heard him be positive about Villa on numerous occassions on 606. I understand that you don't like him which if fine but I can't see many Villa fans switching off because he is the pundit because he said they'd go down.

Unfortunately I wont be able to listen tonight as its Alan Green commentating... He ruins most games now by trying to show that he has a personality and complaining about the weather, kit colours, fans leaving early, "shocking" play, poor support etc... he is a bore.

Believe me, going by the fans opinions I hear on regional football phone-ins and read in local newspapers, social media and fans forums, Savage is extremely unpopular among Villa fans. It wasn't so much that he tipped their team to get relegated, it was how vehemently he held his prediction up to be such a certainty from as early as August that really rubbed the Villa support up the wrong way. They certainly enjoyed pointing out how he got it wrong come the end of the season.

I'm not one of those people who argues that pundits are biased against particular teams or shouldn't cover a club after playing for their rivals, but Savage is such a divisive pundit who many people find a major turn-off at the best of times - given his recent, high-profile criticism of Aston Villa, I find it baffling that Radio 5 Live persist on using him as a summariser whenever they visit Villa Park. Having him cover Villa once every so often is one thing, but it's become noticeable to me that he seems to be a fixture whenever they do commentary on Villa. Why they couldn't call upon another, less divisive pundit based in the Midlands - someone like Steve Froggatt or Dion Dublin for example - for at least some of the Villa matches they cover rather than going for Savage every time is beyond me.

talkSPORT have live commentary on Manchester City v Blackburn Rovers if you want an alternative - being outside the Midlands, I would have appreciated one on Monday!

I've also heard Villa fans be fine with him on 606, their caller of the season was a Villa fan, he admitted he got it wrong last season.

He's BBC staff living not too far from the Midlands so it makes sense\

Every pundit will upset one set of fans at some point in time

So why does it always seem to be Savage covering live Villa games on Radio 5 Live? This is what I don't get, its got to the point where it must be more than just a big coincidence. His general prominence on that station is baffling enough but to have him regularly covering a team who he's well known to have been stridently critical of in the recent past seems particularly wrong-headed.

Friday 17th January - Talk Radio Europe

La Liga
Malaga v Valencia - Paul Breen-Turner and Giles Brown (7.30pm GMT commentary)

Giles Brown is one of Talk Radio Europe's other presenters, I think he usually presents on Friday nights. From what I've heard of TRE's Malaga coverage this season, former Manchester City youth team coach Paul Williams hasn't been involved as the station's co-commentator that often, with Brown and another presenter in Kenny Jones often joining PBT for their commentaries.

In other news, while there's no football updates on talkSPORT's Kick Off with Keys & Gray from Doha tonight, they do have Simon Ward reporting on Northampton Saints v Castres in the Heineken Cup Pool 1.

Absolute Radio's live Premier League game tomorrow will be Arsenal v Fulham, with Kevin Gallacher joining Jim Proudfoot on commentary. It'll be Gallacher's debut on Absolute Radio, with him having been a regular summariser on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Lancashire for a number of years now. In my opinion he's one of Radio 5 Live's best pundits and I've long been a bit stumped as to why he's not used more prominently by them.

A few notes from talkSPORT Live - they didn't provide commentary on any of this week's FA Cup ties but will be broadcasting both second legs from the League Cup semi-finals, as will talkSPORT UK. This weekend, Ian Danter will be commentating on Liverpool v Aston Villa for them, with this being his first talkSPORT Live appearance since the opening day of the season. Meanwhile, Tom Macleod - a talkSPORT Live commentator who read news bulletins and reported on Celtic's UEFA Champions League games for talkSPORT UK - joined Sky Sports News Radio as a presenter and reporter at the turn of the year.

BBC Bristol / Somerset

Geoff Twentyman (studio host)

Birmingham City v Yeovil Town - Ed Hadwin and Chris Spittles (95.5FM)
Bristol City v Milton Keynes Dons - Alistair Durden and Adam Haker (1548MW)
York City v Bristol Rovers - Richard Hoskin and Keith Brookman (94.9FM / 104.6FM / 1566MW)
Leeds Carnegie v Bristol (British & Irish Cup RU) - Mark Hoskins and Steve Gorvett (Chief Executive) (DAB / Online)

BBC Five Live Sports Xtra

Saracens v Connact (Heineken Cup RU) - See post #1258
Cardiff Blues v Exter Chiefs (Heineken Cup RU) (1540GMT KO) - Phil Steele and Martyn Williams (as Radio Wales AM / Digital TV/Radio and Online frequencies)

The 5LSX schedule for today for some reason only had the Cardiff Blues game to last from KO at 3.40pm until 4.40pm with an hour 'spare' until 5.45pm for the Leicester Tigers game to start. Listeners weren't cut off from the Radio Wales commentary at 4.40pm.

The normal routine on Radio Wales for when there's an FM / AM split with staggered start times is for AM listeners to 'return to' the FM schedule during their half time break, which meant that for about 10 minutes or so at least, you could've listened to Tan's Dragons on 5 Live as well as 5 Live Sports Xtra.

BBC Radio Leeds
host: Katherine Hannah at the Halifax Town match*
Leeds United versus Leicester City
commentator: Adam Pope
summariser: Andy Ritchie
Queens Park Rangers versus Huddersfield Town (also on the official Huddersfield Town website)
commentator: Paul Ogden
summariser: Kieran O'Regan
Dave Fletcher reported on Bradford City, and Katherine Hannah reported on Halifax Town.

The Pulse and official Bradford City website
Sheffield United versus Bradford City
host and commentator: Tim Thornton
summariser: Ian Ormondroyd

*This is the first time West Yorkshire Sport has been hosted from a Halifax Town match that wasn't on FM. There was no mention of online commentary.

Last week Katherine Hannah said that during Halifax Town matches she relies on the club's Twitter feed for updates (including score updates). This surprised me because Dave Fletcher was commentating on the match online.

Saturday 18th January - Free Radio 80s

Tom Ross presented The Goalzone from St Andrew's

Premier League
Liverpool v Aston Villa - Chris Coles and Pat Heard (5.30pm commentary in Birmingham, the Black Country and Shropshire)

Championship
Birmingham City v Yeovil Town - Tom Ross and Kevan Broadhurst (3pm commentary in Birmingham, the Black Country and Shropshire)

Olly Wilson was scheduled to commentate on Crawley Town v Wolves in League One, which was due to be The Goalzone's 3pm commentary in the Black Country and Shropshire, before that match was postponed.

Over on Today FM in the Republic of Ireland, while they didn't have a reporter at the early game from the Premier League, they did have Stuart Arrowsmith reporting on Liverpool v Aston Villa in the late game. Today's sister station Newstalk 106-108FM wasn't carrying IRN's updates from Anfield as far as I heard.

Rob Maclean presenting Sportsound on all frequencies.
In the unlikely event that anyone is interested, the reason that Rob was standing in for Richard Gordon is because the latter is currently at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship for Corporate Commentary.

BBC Scotland's "freelancer policy" continues to baffle me. Liam McLeod hurtled through the ranks to become the main TV (supplanting Paul Mitchell) and (when not needed for TV) radio commentator (succeeding David Begg, and overtaking John Barnes) because they wanted "staffers". But then we have Richard Gordon, the main presenter of Sportsound, a freelancer that disappears to fulfil other commitments. Rob Maclean is also a freelancer, despite my stats showing he's the clear "number 2" commentator behind Liam, as well as the main TV presenter.

I'm sure it makes sense to someone somewhere at Pacific Quay.

I went to Derby a couple of years back & there was a statue of a bloke sitting on a sheep.

I thought it was Derby City Council's tribute to Savage, him being Welsh & that! Lol
