Hi,

I've got quite a few DVDs now with directors commentaries although I havent listened to all of them and I wondered what everyone thinks of them and what is their favourite/worst commentary.

My favourite is the Bruce Campbell commentary on Evil Dead

The only one I've watched all the way through...usually I get bored really quickly.

Incidently the Directors commentary on Evil Dead II he is still going on about how much he dislikes the crappy little necklace thing. Could be an even better commentary because there's a lot of banter between him and Sam Raimi who seem to get on really well but like playing tricks on each other.

The following are commentaries I found enjoyable

Guy Hamilton led ensemble compilation on Goldfinger

Compilation on Dr No

Oliver Stone on JFK – an excellent performance from Mr Stone!

First Austin Powers film

Usual Suspects – very good and with a suitable ending!

Kenneth Branagh on “Dead Again” a comprehensive insight to making a film

I don't really have any favourites or off hand think of any that were so terrible I had to turn it off.

Two of the most recent commentaries I've listened to are Shrek and The Godfather (two totally different films I know). What I liked about both were the directors/producers being very critical of their work and pointing out mistakes as well as thinks that didn't quite make it to the final cut. It's good to know that at the end of the day the people involved in making huge Hollywood blockbusters aren't too dissimilar from the rest of us.

Apollo 13 collector's edition has a commentary by the director and, on a separate track, a commentary by the real life Apollo 13 commander and his wife. Haven't listened to it all yet, but seems quite good.

Duncan,

Is this on a single JFK DVD? If so, where did you find it? I've only seen a version with any real extras as part of an Oliver Stone 3 film set, but would really like the JFK disc on its own...

Cheers,
Iain

This is on the revised R1 JFK disc which came out about a year ago. Its also anamorphic this time around.

If you're not bothered which format to get - go for the PAL R4 release as its cheaper, is in a decent box, and despite not being mentioned on the packaging, does contain the commentary.

I know they're not the most popular films around but check out the commentaries on any Kevin Smith DVD. I can particularly recommend Mallrats (R1) or Clerks - The Animated Series(R1)

Just out of curiosity I starting listening to the commentary for The Mummy, and ended up playing it through to the end. I found it very enlightening, and it really made me appreciate what goes into making a film, and how much we take for granted.

I'll certainly be playing the commentaries on some of my other DVDs now.
