...and it dawns on me that there will never be a new episode (i've already seen season 3)

It's a HUGE shame because when it was announced back in March that ABC were looking for new homes for it incase it got canned everyone seemed like it was a certainty it would be back a la Cougar Town.

I'm devastated.
It wasn't the best comedy around....but it was still better then all of CBS and FOX's offerings in my opinion.

NBC had/has Go On, Community, and Parks & Rec which I enjoy(ed) more

A shame about this one. Not the best, but certainly entertaining and watchable.
Another example of American network messing around with the schedule and a popular programme suffering. (still annoyed by Firefly's demise)

You are devastated that a show you regard as "not the best" has been cancelled?. I think you might be overly sensitive dear :-O

Devestated that a tv show out of 4 that I watch was cancelled...when muck like CBS has to offer pulls in 5 times the ratings is most definitely devastating...

It was easily far superior then all on the comedies on CBS (Big Bang, Mike and Molly, 2 Broke Girls, Partners, Rules of Engagement)

When it first started, for me, It was my absolute favourite new US sitcom. Then 2 Broke Girls started ..

But then, to be fair, even if 2BG hadn't come along, I still think Happy Endings has lost something. All the quirkiness that was so entertaining in the first couple of seasons does seem a bit contrived now. I still like it and i'll watch it until the end, but I can sort of see why it was binned really.

I know what you mean. So far S3 hasn't been as good as the first two. But I still think it's better than the shows listed above, with the exception of TBBT, and maybe on a par with 2BG (Jennifer Coolidge spoils it for me, I think I'm the only person who doesn't like her).

If it was popular it wouldn't have been cancelled..

And I must be the only person who doesn't get this. I saw the pilot, it was funny, but I forgot about it. I've tuned into a few episodes here and there, but they just aren't funny...

But it was popular US ratings had it around 5-6m viewers which isn't bad at all. Only when it was shifted to a new day and time did the ratings fall to below 3m.

i enjoy it probably because the 2 eliza's/elisha are hot, dont think its anywhere near as good as 2 Broke Girls though, so not really bothered with it being cancelled

Season 2 was ABC's 2nd highest rated comedy behind only Modern Family.....(which HE benefited from as lead in)

It rated much better then anything ABC has put in that slot this year (suburgatory & How to Live With Your Parents, and look what happened to them...Suburgatory is now mid season fodder and How to Live was canned)....

ABC should've left it were it was...

It crashed this year because it went up against New Girl and Go On (before Xmas Go On was a huge hit) ...

I stopped watching because of her.

If it had been that popular in the first place, it wouldn't have lost viewers during the move. As such, it wasn't really popular, it's just that people too lazy to switch channels after Modern Family...

It might have been a poor scheduling decision, but if it was popular it would have retained the viewers.

Viewers aren't stupid, if they like something they'll seek it out. Like Cougar Town, which has just been renewed after a switch between networks and days, with nothing but reruns and Conan for support.

Reruns which are getting higher ratings then the first run episodes of Cougar Town you mean? Cougar Town is getting less viewers then ruruns of TBBT so maybe viewers are just too lazy to change the channel?

And it obviously had alot to do with Modern Family as a lead in, it was ABC's 2nd highest rated show of the season.... ABC f^^ked themselves over with messing up their schedule...

They had a brilliant line up last year and were dominating wednesday nights with The Middle, Suburgatory, Modern Family and Happy Endings..

They got greedy and decided they wanted more...so they f^^ked up their schedule...by shipping Happy Endings off to a a slot with huge comedy competition and a weak lead in from Dancing with the Stars results (Happy Endings has been cancelled...).... they moved they younger screwing Suburgatory to after Modern Family where it lost a HUGE part of its audience(Suburgatory is now a mid season replacement, likely will be cancelled next year)....and they put a show about a neighborhoood full of aliens after The Middle, which struggled throughout its run with poor ratings(The Neighbors has been shipped off to Friday nights).

ABC's new comedies all failed miserably...Family Tools canned, How to Live...canned...The Neighbors, poor ratings shipped to friday, Malibu Country canned.

I agree, it was a poor decision, I'm just saying that if it had been truly popular viewers would have moved with it. As such, they didn't and so it wasn't that popular to begin with, it was just people struggling to find anything else.

Viewers did move with Cougar Town, otherwise TBS wouldn't have renewed it. It already had enough episodes for syndication before they renewed, so it wouldn't have mattered if they cancelled it or not...

Well viewers did go down for cougar town too.

Last episode on ABC : 3.42 million
First episode on TBS ; 2.18 million

and its lead in, a Big Bang repeat had higher numbers, so people watching a big bang repeat dint stick around for a new Cougar Town

That's not the point, the point was Cougar Town fans bothered to seek it out, therefore it got renewed even though it didn't have to, Happy Endings fans didn't and it got cancelled, even though it would've likely made financial sense to renew it.

And there will always be a certain amount of people watching stuff because it's on, rather than because they want to. Happy Endings appears to have had a lot of them...

But what do you mean Cougar Town fans sought it out?

It lost nearly half its audience, and as you said with Happy Endings, viewers from Modern Family probably just stuck around because nothing else was on..

Same goes for Cougar Town, benefited from a big lead in.

Also by the end of the season Cougar Town was down to 1.20 million viewers.

I never said it had a large audience, I said that if people really liked a show they'd find it even if it was on another network on an entirely different day, using a Cougar Town as an example where that had happened. And as such it couldn't really be considered popular if it was unsustainable without Modern Family. Cougar Town has proven to be sustained even after a network, timeslot and lead in change, so therefore could be considered popular (to a degree)...
The source I have says 1.38 for the final episode.

It's frigging a crime. It was one of the most well written shows filled with pop cultural references and loveable characters.

But Cougar Town wasn't very stable when it moved either...hence the initial cancellation, with demo's as low as 1.0 in the 18-49, which Happy Endings never went as low as until it was shipped to the Friday Night death slot.

Also, Cougar Town has had a bigger reach....it premiered with over 11 million viewers v Happy Endings 7 million.

Yes the final was actually 1.38 (which was also a series low)

Also just looking at Happy Endings ratings....it could've actually survived this season had ABC not moved it around so much... Since most of their new comdedies tanked it might've got a 4th season had it stayed on tuesdays.

Tuesday episodes were getting 1.3 - 1.4 in the demo, and then they started airing on sundays were it lost more viewers and then to fridays were it tanked.

ABC's own fault really.
I'm sure their happy with the Critically panned NEIGHBORS

Which 'Neighbours' is that?

Do you mean 'The Neighbors' the sitcom about the Aliens next door?

I hope not as I thought that was very funny and was glad it got a 2nd series.

It was a shame about Happy Endings. The Neighbors, Apartment 23 and Happy Endings were my fave comedies of the new crop.

Yup its that one....
No offence, it has seemed to pick up alot of fans, but it is critically panned.
I watched the pilot and thought it was the worst pilot i'd seen last year..

The sup par ratings are the reason it got shipped off to friday night

I'm not sure why it was critically panned. Perhaps it wasn't too 'high brow' for them.

It did what it said on the tin, e.g. made people laugh.
