Id like the final to get a FTA outing, BBC perhaps...”

I doubt very much that a FTA channel would get just the final (the pay channels aren't going to want to allow that, and would drive down what they'd be willing to pay for the rights), and given the BBC doesn't know what it's budget is going to be for 2017 onwards until 2015, and it is still operating under the TVL freeze imposed in 2010, I can hardly see them splashing out cash, especially if ITV is willing to bid.

In addition, UEFA and the sponsors won't want the matches to be on the BBC because a big part of the sponsorship is TV advertising and "break bumpers", which are the brief five second bits which come up just as the progamme goes to ad breaks. Some sponsors don't want to shell out for a full thirty second ad, but they do want the break bumbers - an example would be Gazprom, at least in the UK. If the matches are on BBC, neither the ads nor the break bumpers are available, so UEFA may not be able to charge as much from the sponsors for the rights.

So, I'd be amazed if the BBC are even interested, more so if they end up with any of the rights.

My impression is that both BT and Sky are hiking subscriptions overall by roughly the same amount (for obvious reasons). They are both way above inflation and I can't see that changing if there is a bidding war between them over CL football.”

To think, people were saying that prices would come down as competition is good.......

Well, if everyone was as eager to abandon ITV at the first opportunity as people suggest, then Sky would presumably get its biggest audience of the CL season for the final (when a British team is in it), but it doesn't. So lots of people who watched the earlier rounds on Sky are happy to go over to ITV to watch the final.

This is the same as offering every Premier League game, though, if you want to watch that much Premier League you've already got Sky so it won't attract any more subscribers. If every Champions League match is attractive to you, you've almost certainly already got Sky. And of course because of the ITV game, you can already see every Champions League game live if you've got Sky. Having to switch to ITV to see one of them hardly seems much of an issue.

That argument (that competition would drive down prices for customers) doesn't work in this context because it's not as though both Sky and BT Sport have the same programming content and therefore have to try to undercut one another to get people to sign up. Instead, they are bidding against one another for the rights to various events, which is hardly going to help keep prices they chrage customers down. Plus of course sports fans who want all the content have to sign up for both channels.

My thinking in the joint ITV/Sky game would be that out of all the packages available - Sky probably would bid for all of them i.e first pick tues and first pick Wed.

ITV would also bid for first pick Tues.

Assuming Sky bid more than ITV (and anyone else bidding) - could UEFA not accept Sky's bid for everything and then a slight discount on Tues 1st pick and also accept ITV's bid to ensure they get money from Sky and ITV?

Sky would be happy as they keep first pick away from BT, and sharing a game with ITV wouldnt bother them hugely if the numbers made sense?

No chance, all matches will be available in this day and age. You are talking bull and you know it.

Err, what? He is saying there WONT be a deal which doesn't allow all the matches to be shown! Try reading properly.

Yes but he was saying if it went to ITV, they will only show 2 matches which is untrue. ITV Digital had it once and they showed all matches. ITV could have interactive options or seperate channels spread to show each match.

Very unlikely to happen.

They didn't show them all live though: only up to three live games a night The rest were shown delayed over the following days.

Now, of course, ITV could show all 8 if it were to win the rights exclusively. But I don't expect that to happen.

Oh ok, I thought as such. They had a live goals show though if I remember correctly.

I didn't suggest people were eager to abandon ITV.

I would have thought that was crystal clear from my previous post - and many posts I have made over the years.

A number of people may think that on here - I don't.

I agree many people with SS do watch the final on ITV - because many people don't care which channel they watch it on. So these people will make the choice due to random factors and some may end up on ITV due to EPG position / more prominent position in listings magazines etc.

However there are some people who do make the specific choice to watch on SS and they are enough to make the stats what they are.

I was merely correcting the statement in your previous post.

Surely Sky vs ITV has only one winner, Sky.

Do you expect them to hold on to what they got now?

The only likely change would be ITV change their day from Tuesday to Wednesday, and they will probably avoid that to avoid incurring the wrath of Coronation Street viewers

Well on Friday 11th October the 2 episodes of Coronation Street have been postponed to the following Sunday evening in an hour long episode because of the England football World Cup Qualifiyer on that evening. No doubt all the soap fans will be moaning about that. Keep clear of the soap forums on that occasion.

ITV will want to keep Tuesdays, because that's when England games are played midweek.

UEFA annoyed them slightly, because it wasn't long after picking up rights for Wednesday instead, internationals were moved to Tuesday.

Because of the new centralised broadcasting rights, Euro & World Cup qualifiers will be spread across 6 days, so England could play Thursday & Sunday, Friday & Monday, or Saturday & Tuesday.

While that's true, it wouldn't surprise me if the "bigger" nations' broadcasters can have a say - in which case, ITV would always want England on Saturday and Tuesday.

But even if that's not the case, England are still more likely to play on Tuesday than Wednesday (i.e. not at all for the latter), and midweek friendlies will still always be Tuesday, so I can see ITV still preferring it.

Silly question maybe, could Sky BT and ITV all have some rights when the final packages are drawn up?

There are five packages arent they? So there could be five different broadcasters, in theory.

Broadcasters have zero say. UEFA are somewhat very controlling and giving away say to tv is something UEFA would rather die than allow.
ITV are frankly are morons, they knew the package structures for the UCL yet still opted for Tuesday, knowing they would have no rights for the Wed highlights untill Friday's, which for me, and most people with brains, know that move is stupid.
If the goons at ITV Sport have any brains, it will be Wednesday, but looking at the state of ITV Sport, its going to be the same Tuesday bid.
But as i have said, i hope ITV get nothing, their coverage is beyond a joke and losing the UCL might be a wakeup they have been ignoring.

I know - I was agreeing with you! We've been in enough threads in the past for me to know your views, and totally respect them.

I was referring to the other posters who were suggesting the public as a whole didn't like ITV and wanted it all on Sky. The fact is, the Champions League Final, even when a British team is in it, gets lower ratings on Sky then the exclusive matches Sky have earlier in the tournament - so clearly some people who have Sky Sports don't watch the final on there. Because they're happy to watch it on ITV.

That's the point you and I are both making. But I'm arguing that you don't need to look at the BARB ratings and work out the percentage of home with Sky Sports, You can see it from the simple fact they get about two million for a semi-final and 700,000 or so for the final. If everyone hated ITV so much, everyone would stick with Sky.

The other reason why ITV prefer Tuesday is that Tuesday is a much weaker night for them than Wednesday, and also BBC1 is very strong on Tuesday with mostly female-skewing programming, so it makes much more financial sense for ITV to show football on Tuesdays, which is obviously heavily male-skewing anyway, and then show the soaps and big dramas on Wednesday when BBC1 are traditionally weak.

But ITV make their money from live matches, not highlights programmes, so live matches are their absolute top priority and they want to show them on Tuesdays because that's a better night for them. They're a commercial business and don't really care if they can't show highlights of the Wednesday matches, the highlights shows get tiny audiences.

It would be better if UEFA offered a Tuesday live, Wednesday highlights package but they don't. The only way you get Wednesday highlights is to show a live game on Wednesday and ITV don't want to do that beause they'll get higher ratings with Coronation Street on a Wednesday. So it's much poorer value. They're not showing football out of the goodness of their hearts, they want to get the best possible return from it.

If they did end up losing their rights I doubt very much they would get anything back in a hurry...I would say these rights are of the upmost importance for ITV.
