Or Man Utd who finished fifth......

Seriously, though, this is the death of football right here. But thinking about it a bit more, I'd have thought the PL would be under considerable pressure to just pick the fourth team every season. I could imagine the Man City owners walking away if they got shafted.

5 to 7 : 2 teams in groups (plus 1 team in qualification rounds)
8 to 11 (or 8 to 12) : 1 team in groups (plus 1 team in qualification rounds)

With all due respect - I give the whole 'historic' teams thing a 0% chance of actually happening. Other reports state the English clubs have been supportive of the idea, but havent been actively pushing it. There would be the equivalent of a sporting riot should it happen. UEFA arent THAT daft.

I agree; I expect the clubs may have been pushing for it as a negotiating tactic to get UEFA to move closer in their direction whilst knowing full well it would never happen.

I guess that the "historic" team will still have an element of being results based.

Top 3 English teams go straight into the Group Stage + 4th English team based on UEFA co-efficiant over a 5 year period. For example - Manchester United would still have got in after the Fergie years.

I also think this is unlikely to happen in practice.

It would only affect two countries – assuming Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all qualify through performance (which is almost 100% certain) – I can’t think of any other “historic” level teams in Spain or Germany.

So that just leaves England and Italy. As posted above, I think the FA would come under absolutely massive pressure to just nominate the top 4 in the PL.

It’s also hard to see how it would work in practice if introduced. “Historic” would have to be tightly defined, with clear rules as to how it would work.

The original suggestion was Liverpool could qualify instead of Man City – but Man City’s UEFA co-efficient is far higher than Liverpool’s so it doesn’t look as if UEFA co-efficients would be used. So what would be? Maybe just number of European Cup wins? Who knows?

If the above was the case it would create an absolutely bizarre consequence – if Man Utd and Liverpool were our two “historic” teams then every Liverpool fan would then suddenly want Man Utd to do well – ie they would want Man Utd to qualify in the top 3 in the PL to allow Liverpool to get the “historic” place. I can’t imagine how everyone would react to that.

If these new proposals come true in the new contract, probably wishful thinking on my part but it should be a open draw in the group stages country v country no separate clubs from same countries. There has to be a compromise somewhere from the big clubs

Surely the better compromise would be a guaranteed Europa League place for all former European champions provided they finish in the top 8 of their own league?

Looks like BT will need 3 channels now since Celtic are through and most likly Man City. Seems like it's either going to be BT Sport 1,2 and 3 or 2,3 and ESPN.

You know the games are spread over two evenings?

The UK will have 5 teams in it. So 3 will play on the same night.
Imagine the London clubs will play on different days.

But if Man City get through which is no doubt going to happen then there will be nights where we have 3 British teams playing so BT will need 3 channels to show them on, it would be extreamly silly by BT if they dumped a British team match behind the red button, they have used 3 channels tonight to show Play-off games so I don't see the problem of using 3 to show British teams.

Not quite sure if we discuss the UEFA coefficients on this thread or not, or if it is just the TV coverage, but both Villarreal (Spain) and Roma (Italy) failed to qualify for the champions league tonight. With Manchester City looking almost certain to get through tomorrow, it will do our coefficient a power of good, and keep 4 champions league places for us for some time now I would have thought.

Also Celtic getting through to the group stages is good for Scotlands coefficient.

BT have 4 channels so there isn't a problem!

I think you do get points for qualifying for the group stage so it does work to our advantage. However, a good run in the Europa League can be just as profitable as a run in the Champions League.

Probably 1/2/3, unless the Goals Show goes behind the red button rather than ESPN

This is how the Pairings work

The TV Companies (used to be ITV) announce the Top 2 teams they want to NOT play on same night (eg Barca and Real )

UEFA Puts one of these into a Red Group
and the Other into a Blue Group

These groups will play on different nights every week

As far as Arsenal and Tottenham are concerned the Computer just makes sure they never both play at home on the same Matchweek

So it is BT who will decide who is paired and not the Police.

My guess is BT will pair Man City and Arsenal

So Spurs could play on the same day as Arsenal or it could be Leicester

You get 5 Bonus Points for getting to CL Group Stages
You get 5 Bonus Points for reaching the CL Last 16

None of these are available in the EL

But if you win all 6 EL games rather than just 1 CL game then you can cancel out the above

They almost certainly won't be paired. When we talk about pairing we are talking about the two teams that will be kept apart. Almost certainly Arsenal will be one team, it is probably a toss up between Man City and Spurs - I think BT might go for the latter as they are in Pot 3 and so are more likely to have a tougher draw.

So Leicester could end up on the same night as any of the other three teams.

True. Personally I'm hoping Arsenal play on the same night as Man City as I think Leicester and Spurs would offer the more interesting games on the other night.

Surely you'd want Man City and Arsenal to play on different nights, then, because that would keep Leicester and Spurs apart giving you a chance to see both their games?
