Not sure. Maybe they were going to have the 2nd leg on, but then saw Man City were 5-0 up and there was no way they would fail to get through, and therefore decided to save it for a later match.

Surely that would have been a reason to put it on Showcase - effectively a dead rubber.

Well I suppose so. Maybe they have decided to be kind this year.

Searching BT Sport Showcase on Twitter

It appears the only game shown so far was Rooneys Testimonial v Everton

The group draw is decent for BT, all 4 English teams have a reasonable chance of getting through, some good games with City, Barca & Celtic and also Arsenal/PSG

Celtic might finish 3rd for EL after Xmas which BT would also like

Plus some strong games not involving British teams. This new seeding system with Pot 1 for champions does add some spice in the group stages

It's not me that needed the lesson, but thanks anyway

I was asking the relevance in the ongoing discussion between myself and citytilidie and how his response was relevant in that context.

He claimed he got the pairings right but I was pointing out it was for all the wrong reasons...

Some interest stuff coming out of UEFA:

http://www.uefa.org/about-uefa/admin...d=2398899.html

No wildcard but coefficients are going to be revamped to take into account for "historical successes".

It's also interesting that the management of the club competitions are going to be contracted out to a subsidiary company that is, in part, controlled by the European Club Association.

So our 4th Place in the PL is
A Guaranteed for a few years now (Top 4 countries not 3)
B Gets into Group Stage directly

Yes, so our agonizing over the coefficient was all for nothing.

Looks like smaller clubs such has Leicester will get less when they take part based on this;
"A new four-pillar financial distribution system (starting fee, performance in the competition, individual club coefficient and market pool) will see sporting performances better rewarded, while market pool share will decrease."

Market pool decreasing means less money automatically for English clubs as they will get less for just being in the UK TV market.

However receiving money for European coefficient will mean more automatic money for teams with high coefficients so to some degree swings and roundabouts - will need to see precise calculation to determine winners and losers and even then it will obviously depend upon performance.

The one English club which looks to benefit most - IF they can get back in the CL - is Liverpool - with a pretty low co-efficient (as currently calculated) but a very strong history - including history in the calculation is going to help their coefficient - though to what extent we'll have to see.

Man Utd should also gain, whereas Man City, Arsenal and Spurs would lose out to some degree (assuming they are just looking at past European trophies). Chelsea probably about neutral with a recent CL and EL.

I think CL group stage will be something like:

EL winner = 1
Rank 1-4 = 4@4 = 16
Rank 5-6 = 2@2 = 4
Rank 7-12 = 6@1 = 6
Total = 27

Additional League:
Rank 5-12 all have one - 8 play two rounds down to 2 who go into CL

Additional Champions:
Rank 13 downwards play down to 3 who go into CL

27 + 2 + 3 = 32

Not bad for Rank 5-12 - key point is they can't meet a top 4 country in qualifying - so everyone will feel they have good chance.

So Rank 5-6 have a chance of 3 teams in group, Rank 7-12 have a chance of 2 teams in group.

But very hard on Rank 13 downwards - an awful lot of countries playing for just 3 places - so very hard on, eg, Scotland.

I guess if EL winner spot not needed then Rank 13 downwards get 4 places instead of 3.

NB. All assumes no place needed for CL winner.

Is the play off round being tampered with too

By definition it will be altered given that teams that had to qualify will no longer have to do so. mlt11's post is probably a good guess at how it will be structured.

It's being reported that UEFA want to adopt the Europa League kick-off times (6pm and 8.05pm UK) for the Champions League to stop teams from the same country clashing.

Police will say no to 6pm games here in the UK, espcially if it's something like Arsenal V Barcelona. The game would start at peak-traffic time and it would be chaos for those leaving work and getting to the match.

There's been 6pm kick-offs in the Europa League without any police objection.

But didn't Man United V Liverpool get moved to 8:05pm because the council or someone didn't want it to start at 6pm? I would understand if it was a low key game but for big head-to-head games I would think they would reject it starting at 6pm.
Mark.

Yes, but that's the first time it's happened.

But in any case, UEFA do generally try and keep UK teams at home at the later time.

No question that that will be very attractive for TV and will certainly generate more TV revenue than would otherwise be the case.

Marginal call but I suspect this fractionally increases the chance of ITV winning some rights. I would still rate that chance as low but I think slightly higher than with current arrangement.

If ITV has one game per week and Sky/BT three (English games) then Sky/BT has three without a clash - whereas under existing arrangement they have one. Big difference.

Plus it's very rare for English teams to meet in the CL - Man Utd v Liverpool in the EL last season was almost a unique situation.

Surely the early kick off time would primarily apply to Eastern Europe. Although of course it's 7pm in Western Europe

It would apply across continental Europe, just as it currently does in the EL.

In theory it would also apply in the UK but in practice it probably wouldn't. Although last season Celtic had a home game at 6pm in the Europa League group stage. Apparently it was something to do with the seeding, but I'm not sure.
