I wouldn't be astonished - I wouldn't even be surprised.

If UEFA stick with ITV for the reasons I posted in posts 318 and 319 then all it takes (for Sky to not get any 1st picks) is for BT to outbid Sky for the other 1st pick package.

It's very, very possible. I'm not saying I expect it to happen but it very easily could.

E - All other Tue games
F - All other Wed games

The packages this time round surely cannot vary much from this.”

Would Tues highlights be included in Package A? I thought if you had anything from that night you could show highlights - after all Sky don't have first pick on Tuesday but show Tuesday highlights!

That's what I thought. This is what was posted earlier in this thread (I think) by someone else so if it's wrong don't blame me!

Regardless the highlights are of limited value / interest.

Looking at the structure for the last bidding process E and F require a broadcaster capable of delivering 7 or 8 games at once (if they are showing every group game live on TV).

Sky are the only ones capable of that as it stands but those packs would not include the final.

Second picks seem more likely for BT. Perhaps that would fit for them alongside Europa League coverage (if they intend to renew Europa League similar to what they have inherited).

A CL game Tues and a CL game Wed followed by Europa League coverage Thu on BT? Presumably if that is possible then I think that is possible!

This bidding process will give us some indication of what BT future strategy actually is. Is BT Sport there to act simply as a broadband protection mechanism or will they seek to strengthen their sport portfolio to provide true competition for Sky. If the latter, then winning a first pick CL package would seem to be a priority, and at the earliest possibliy to underline to public they mean business.

From the previous package structure, if UEFA did opt for Sky/BT as first pick broadcasters, then ITV could conceivably survive, at least during the group stages, with a second pick package and still provide some form of FTA coverage. UEFA really should consider adding the final to their second pick packages to make them more attractive.

Nothing more than we have already been saying, just clarifies the point that BT want some of the Champion's League and will bid, and by the sounds of it quite highly.

I think thats BT's way of saying yes we are going to bid but dont tell sky we are very interested. We will pretend we would like to have them but its no biggie if we dont.

Yes but Sky aren't stupid. Unlike the Premier League auction, BT's undoubted involvement won't come as a surprise. I'd actually be surprised if BT don't pick up any rights - indeed I wonder if Sky will focus most of their attention on 1st and 2nd picks and be relatively content to lose the rest of the rights.

Really?? Surely BT would want 2nd pick or better?

Ist time in the market for these rights they cant expect to walk away with the bulk but equally anything less than a second pick may of well mean they concentrate on Europa League again!!....if that is the case im sure they will end up a lot better than the very poor deal ESPN had.

They will - which is why Sky would be content if BT only got some poor lower choice picks!

I'd be surprised if there was a 3 way split - I'm not sure how much BT would gain from having picks below 3rd choice, aside from making a slight move into the Champions League I suppose.

3rd picks and below are absolutely trivial commercially - you don't get any knock-out matches at all and the audience for 3rd picks and below in the group stages is absolutely miniscule when you have got two English teams playing in the 1st and 2nd pick slots.

arius posted that 3rd picks and below went for £2m total in the 2009/12 auction - it's peanuts and almost a total irrelevance.

I know an English team was 3rd pick when ITV chose Celtic but that is a complete one-off. There isn't even any guarantee that a Scottish team will make the group stages.

UEFA like all the games to be shown but it's being done as a "public service" really.

Im sure if BT thought they would get only 3rd pick or worse they would concentrate whole heartily on the Europa League and make sure they got a decent deal there.

If BT want to become serious players they need to take some of the Champion's League righty. This is more about intent then anything.

3rd picks are Trivial ???

In the Current Year you have
Chelsea
Arsenal
Celtic
Barcelona

all on one night

I am sure BT will be more than happy showing the last 2 if they had picks 3 and 4 !!!

Do we know the percentage of UK homes that have BT vs Sky Sports? UEFA have their corporate sponsors to think about as well, which is why I would be amazed if ITV doesn't end up with more or less what they have now, and why I'd expect Sky will too unless BT completely blow them out of the water, and manage to convince UEFA that by the time the new deal starts they will have at least a comparable number of subscribers as Sky Sports.

Especially if as posted above they got the rights for something around £2 million. That's nothing to them as far as money for rights is concerned - the only problem is that they apparently have to show all of the other matches (so about 6 or 7 per night I think) - and they don't have the space to do that yet unless they put them online.

The problem I'd have with BT getting the Champions League is that they don't have the gravitas to do the competition justice.

Jake Humphrey grinning in the corner while David James tries to get his "point" heard over the audience applauding Clare Balding's next guest? No thanks...

They can't even do the Premier League matches any justice, imagine doing the premier cup competition.

Spot on. At every turn, BT have made the wrong call with their choice of on-air "talent".

And putting them on line would be a farce, as not everyone has a fast enough internet connection to allow them to comfortably watch matches in a good enough manner.

Have you seen the new champions league promo where Sky are simulcasting the next Manchester Utd game on Sky 1 as well as Sky Sports 2?

I've spoken to a friend at Sky who told me they are doing this ahead of the next rights auction. They want to keep their options open and show UEFA the widest possible audience they are able to reach. In France UEFA have sold all of the domestic rights to the champions league to pay tv. From what I understand Sky are perfectly happy with the current arrangement sharing the rights with ITV but with BT expecting to come in hard they are looking at winning the rights on an exclusive basis. Hence why they are now airing the odd game on Sky 1 in the hope that impressive audience figures are achieved - which is ITV's main bargaining chip.

What's the reach of Sky 1?

Would it be enough to convince UEFA that one match per week could be shown there while keeping the advertisers happy?
