I'll predict the following...

A - First pick Tue, Tue highlights, Final (ITV)
B - First pick Wed, Wed highlights, Final (SKY)
C - Second pick Tue (BT SPORT)
D - Second pick Wed (BT SPORT)
E - All other Tue games (SKY)
F - All other Wed games (SKY)

My prediction:

First picks (both days): Sky (not that I think they particularly want to outbid ITV, but I think fear of competition from BT will cause them to up their bids and win both)
Second pick: BT one day, Sky one day
Other picks: Sky

Europa League: Not sure how these rights are split? What are the packages? I imagine BT will end up with better rights than they currently have this time around.

I think first pick matches on one night makes the most sense for BT - and allows them to continue with the 'we show games that are no longer available on Sky/ITV' tagline.

The Independent at the weekend said that 'sources' suggested BT would go for exclusive rights to every CL match but that would be such a seismic shift that I struggle to see it happening - but of course a shift of this nature is exactly what BT tried at the Premier League auction (in that case trying to win the majority of matches and all first picks) so its not impossible just unlikely.

With no second round, I doubt we will be waiting that long to find out - my prediction, and that's all it is, is that by the end of the week a new Sky/BT deal will be announced with BT getting ITV's current rights - but even as I type that I wonder if UEFA are really prepared to abandon FTA TV.

It's a hard one to call - I guess the status quo continuing, at an inflated price, is the slight favourite.

I don't think personally that will be far off and you are defiantly right about the Europa League, how ESPN, at the time, got those horrific rights I do not know but there will be a vast improvement to what they are now.
2nd picks at very worse but with a semi final it would have to be not like now when their participation finishes after the 4pick quarter final!!

Back to the Champion's League if ITV do keep their first pick the it will be a status quo and BT have nothing, but I will say very very nervous and worrying times for ITV.

It could be a very bleak moment in ITV's football schedule, loss of FA Cup, maybe loss of Champion's League and perhaps a severe dent in their Europa Cup coverage.

I agree with your post however my only question to the highlighted above is why?
They have had good exposure for years and years not just in this country but around Europe so in this day and age of ridiculous money what would really stop them grabbing the money and run?

I think the specification in the rights of being able to "exploit on all media platforms including online" may be significant for BT - didn't they say they had 1 million app downloads? So added to the 4 million they are claiming with BT + Sky + Virgin customers, they can say "well we can show this to 5 million plus" - obviously still nowhere near the number ITV could, but could be enough to sway UEFA into taking more money over possible greater exposure.

To use the app you need to be one of the 4m.

i.e. BT Broadband customer who's activated the channel but doesn't have Sky/BT TV to watch it.

That's what I'll go with, and BT picking up the best of the Europa League rights.

I just don't see the logic in BT spending stupid money at this stage of their development. They're not going to outbid Sky for the full CL rights, nor will UEFA want their premier competition on a still not that widely subscribed UK channel. And are people really going to sign up for BT on top of Sky just for the ok but not great Premier League matches they have and one night of CL football?

BT have to think long term, build a partnership with UEFA on the Europa Cup, and go from there.

Watch me now be 100% wrong!!

Good point, not sure why that didn't register before I typed that!

Just as far as the timetable for an announcement is concerned, the auction for the rights in Norway, Sweden and Denmark closed on October 10th and the winner, MTG, was announced on October 31st.

Bearing that in mind I think 2 weeks from now could be a good bet.

SSN prepped by higher up at Sky? Or just UEFA?

If the former, that would suggest a big win for Sky (whereas the latter would just be an organisation informing a news outlet of an impending announcement).

1 thing I'll never understand personally is Tuesday 1st pick getting Tuesday highlights but not Wednesday highlights too. I mean, yeah ok they can show the UK teams/anything major on the news (can't they?) but it seems daft that ITV (or whoever gets the 1st pick Tuesday game + highlights) can only show highlights from 1 night of games.

Well the above posts would certainly appear to suggest that Sky are pretty confident of good news for them.

Whether that will actually prove to be the case we'll have to wait and see.

But it does sound as if they are expecting an announcement quite a bit more quickly than we might have expected.

I hardly think Sky are going to announce that BT are the new home of the Champion's League?

I would say they have at least kept what they already have which would really be nogreat surprise to anyone.

However all this after just 5 hours of the deadline?

Hallrose always a reliable poster, although it would be a surprise if Sky knew already that they had secured some rights - and if they did then surely it would be something they would be obliged to keep quiet until they were ready to announce it to the markets.

Think Sky must have retained (at least) what they have if they're announcing it on SSN. Wouldn't make a big deal of it if they'd lost rights.

If SKY lost the rights it would be what is the Champions League on SSN etc ?

Exactly, as shown by how they treat most other rights they don't have (in the SSN world, they don't exist).

I hope sky get the complete irish live tv rights, no more rte/tv3

If Sky have found out really quickly might imply that BT ended up not bidding.

Depends on the situation I suppose. They didn't use to have F1, but I'd imagine in certain situations they'll mention it (eg 2008/2009 when Hamilton then Button won the title at the final race) or Wimbledon when Murray won last year (also same goes for the Olympics last year where I think they certainly gave it a decent amount of coverage, more so when a Brit won a medal). Cycling though for example never got any real coverage until Sky created a team and also got some (albeit not a massive amount of) cycling rights.
