I don't understand how BT can move forward the service that Sky were doing, if they only show a maximum of three matches (if they make use of ESPN) at once, which is a downward step from the seven at once (on the same channel), and then eight at once, that Sky were showing, with ease of use to record individual matches.

How will someone be able to record say Barcelona v AC Milan, whilst watching Juventus v Real Madrid under this deal?

It really doesn't make any sense, and is just a huge step backwards as far as I can see, unless someone can tell me differently?”

Simple answer - get you to go with BT Infinity / BT TV where they can broadcast as many games (via their TV multicast system) as they care.

I have BT Sport in HD via Youview / BT Infinity - perfect and reliable picture. With the recent addition of dozens of new channels (including most Sky branded channels) BT TV is becoming a real alternative - and you don't need a dish.

How about you wait and see what happens before pre judging? People didn't even think BT Sport would be 'free' until the morning it was announced.

Not mentioned it at all, sky news had brief statement.

Well what would you expect them to say ? They still have 2 Champions League finals to show.

Assuming they've got BT Sport on their Freeview transmitter and/or Sky/Virgin.

Freesat viewers won't get the free matches.

It's just a loop of Jim White saying "They will never take the Sky Sports Victory Shield"!

It is all well and good boasting about this, but how long will it be until we actually get some proper details about how they plan to show all of the matches?

Unless they plan to have a red button service, or a way to watch all of the matches at once, and make them recordable, then I just don't, or won't see why people should be celebrating, as it will be a lesser service than we have had previously.

BT had better find some way to actually answer these questions, otherwise this will be a huge loss for the consumer.

What makes you so sure that BT won't put their free promotional channel on Freesat?

I don't know about that service, can you record things, like you can with a Sky + box?

I completely agree with you. I'm in Ireland on the Sky platform. BT don't have a red button service on Sky, and I very much doubt they'll attempt to convenience Sky subscribers to their service with one. Thing is, in the UK, you might have a choice to switch to BT's platform. In Ireland, we don't. I'd be staggered if this deal doesn't seriously compromise my viewing choice at the very least.

To be fair to derek500, he rightly pointed out that my statement of "free to all" may not quite be correct. What we do know is that BT Sport will make some matches freely available, and anyone should fairly easy be able to get it.

So this BT announcement isn't relevant to you as the RoI rights are separate...?

It will be increasingly normal to stream live tv via the internet by then. 3 games on the 3 channels and the rest online is something that could be done TODAY.

The next PL rights are going to go through the roof - Sky can't afford to lose any ground on those now and BT (assuming they continue this aggressive strategy) are going to go hell for leather to deal that killer blow.

Can't help thinking that splitting of rights just leads viewers to think that neither are worth paying for.

Just now on Sky News there were talking about the deal and Sky accusing BT of over inflating the price and Sky was not prepared to pay.

Total pot calling the kettle black, Sky have been doing it for 20 years to elimate competition.

Via UEFA:

"Live, delayed and highlights coverage of both competitions will be broadcast across pay channels BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN.

Rights to highlights programmes have been awarded on a co-exclusive basis."

"An announcement on the awarding of co-exclusive highlights rights in respect of both competitions will be made in due course."

"UEFA would like to take this opportunity to thank current live rights holders, Sky Sports and ITV, for their outstanding contribution to the club competitions."

But how is that a step forward? We can at the moment (on Wednesday's at least) watch all the group stage matches, all at once, will this be possible via BT?

What about the Europa League? Will we be able to watch all of the group stage matches all at once?

Soo many questions still to be answered here, the fan fare is only the icing on the cake, as they haven't told us anything of substance yet.

When the ITV franchises went out to tender back in the early 90's, a few of the larger bidders didn't win because they failed on other aspects of the bid. UEFA have taken the money and run here, without a moments thought as to how BT can replicate the Sky coverage.

No, it's very relevant. The rights in Ireland are complicated, but Sky, for example, had rights for the UK and Ireland. So, we got what you got. Irish channels fought over the FTA rights, but Sky had the rights in Ireland to broadcast all of their coverage.

Ireland is too small for a separate pay-per-view entity, so we'll very much be dependent on what happens in the UK if we want the same choice as we have now.

ITV have not shown Wigan yet for example

They have shown Spurs 4 times and Swansea 4

But for fans of European clubs they have NO RED BUTTON

So we will just get 2 or 3 games each night
