I need to get a new litter tray - very exciting I know - and I prefer the ones with a roof on, which my little man uses now. However, all the ones I've seen have a door on the entrance, which I assume works like a cat flap. My Felix has never used a cat flap in his life, so how easy do you think it will be for him to adapt to using a litter tray with a flap like door? I would actually prefer these type anyway but of course if he can't figure out how to get in, it will be a waste of time anyway. While quite sprightly, at 15 he is getting on a bit, so I'm not sure he will adjust to the new set up! Does anyone have any such experience of teaching their old boys/girls such techniques? Thanks

The flap comes off as does the hood. I'd use it without a hood until he has scented it a few times then I'd put the hood on without the flap for a while and then add the flap at a later date.

I would use it without the hood at first but unfortunately he has a habit of spraying out in the general direction of a wall rather than neatly into the litter tray.

Just leave the door/flap off then, until he gets used to it

We've got a tray in the garden with a polycarbonate roof and both cats have got used to it one is about 16 now
I clean it out every morning and change it once a fortnight when the dustbin is emptied and it seems fine the litter has the blue bits in and doesn't seem to smell at all

My old boy Tigger had the awful habit of using our bath as his toilet . In the end we gave in and let him because if we stopped him he did it on the landing carpet outside the bathroom door and it was easier to clean up from the bath.

Then i had a new bathroom fitted last November and really wanted to stop him so we put a large litter tray with a hood and flap on the landing. He used it great from day one but only if the flap was propped open. (Unfortunately our other cat Hicks also used it from day one too). We have a cat flap so Tigger was used to one but he absolutely refused to use the litter tray if the flap was closed.

We tried everything but he just would not use it and would poo on the landing just outside the flap if it was down/closed so in the end we had to give in and removed the flap.

I hope you have more luck than we did and maybe if we had persevered he would eventually have used it but after 4 months of trying we gave up and removed the flap.

I bought a hooded litter tray for my cat when he went blind and and started urinating behind the TV.
Despite never having used a litter tray in his life, he's now 17, and being blind, he had absolutely no problem with it.
He now comes in from the garden to use his litter tray he loves it that much.
