We'll have to disagree strongly on this one! Okay, it's low budget, yes, it's clearly not to the same high standards of Match of the Day or other BBC Sport programmes.

But the fact every single goal is shown, just hours after the matches have ended is an enormous improvement on anything that has gone before. As a fan of a League 1 club it is greatly appreciated and it's a whole lot more effort than ITV ever put in.

I would hate it if it was to finish, as would many other lower league football fans I think. Going to lower league matches you'll very often hear people saying 'can't wait to see that later on the Football League Show'. It gets strong ratings too - 1 million every week, plus iPlayer.

Because it provides a weekly free service for the 1 million dedicated lower league football fans. If it wasn't there it would almost certainly not be on free to air TV at all. Last year there was quite a big campaign to keep the Football League Show when the contract was coming to an end.

I haven't seen any figures for the deal, but I'd imagine the BBC are paying a tiny sum for the rights, if anything at all. The Football League knows the importance of it too.

Does anyone have the ratings for C4 at 8pm and 9pm without +1 for last night (the shows were Gok's Fashion thing and Diana's Dresses)? Many thanks.

The BBC had a better deal when they had League highlights and some live games. This deal felt desperate as they'd lost so much sport, had their budget cut and wanted to show they had a presence. The last League Cup Final they showed got numbers similar to an FA Cup Final. They should have tried to hold onto it.

Well if they had held on to it, they wouldn't of just won FA Cup right that's for sure. That in my opinion was a pretty bad deal actually - live Championship games were of very little value and didn't rate well at all, and there were only two live League Cup games let's not forget. They only got into that contract because they had lost the FA contract and there no other football to bid for.

Football League highlights is a very important public service. Think what you like about the programme, it has got fantastic brand recognition amongst lower league football fans.

Just had a ratings search - The Championship on ITV used to average around 600k, The Football League Show on BBC is now averaging 1m.

Despite what one poster has stated, sports budgets and entertainment budgets are entirely separate.

They haven't got any live premier league games either.

Is the premier league highlights deal, delivering an iconic and warmly received weekly institution, also a rubbish deal then?

Oh, I'm not saying they shouldn't have the rights. I support a Championship club and want to see their goals on the telly. But the programme's crap from top to bottom, everything about it is wrong, and I tend to watch it now to see how rival teams are getting on and watch my team's goals on the club website with its extended match highlights than tune in for 20 seconds of coverage on TFLS.

If they cut out all the guff and dropped the "featured match", they could give all 72 clubs a bigger share of the allotted time.

The other beef with TFLS is the lack of highlights over the crucial Christmas and New Year season, other than when there is a full league programme on a festive Saturday.

Anyway, going a bit off topic here...

Quite right too. Having the Final kick off at 3pm is an archaic tradition that should have been consigned to history years ago.

Surely they aren't bending over for a relative minor channel like BT? Or does a ratings friendly 5.15 suit the BBC too?

New Tricks confirmed to start on Tuesday 30th July.

With that taking up 10 weeks, there won't be room for both The Paradise and Last Tango in Halifax on Tuesdays this year, one will either be moved or pushed back to next year. I'm guessing it will be Last Tango. I still think a Sunday 8pm slot would work extremely well for it.

That's the last season of CSI: NY screwed then. I wish it had remained on Saturday nights now.

To be fair, CSI: Vegas has been solid as a rock opposite Luther. But New Tricks is a different beast.

If Tony Hall came in as DG instead of George Entwistle he could have dealt with Savile better, in fact if he was Chairman then he would have been better than Patten.”

It was actually John Birt who believed in reducing sport in the schedules and began the slide. He actually proposed the idea that one commentary (either radio or TV) should be used across all platforms to reduce the number of commentators and save money. But that from the man who when he was at LWT produced Weekend World, possibly the most boring programme broadcast anywhere, in which the presenter read to camera for 60 minutes. Birt believed the use of graphics, VT or other visuals got in the way of the message - and he was working in television.

They did. Just not enough young viewers unfortunately.

Maybe not too late for C5 to change the date. Would be a shame for NY to bow out on a low note, it's been a grand old servant over the years and is still a great hour of telly. Wasteful to air against New Tricks when it's been sat on the shelf so long and they basically messed up their Saturday nights in Q1 holding it back.

A sunday night 8pm slot would be perfect for both but the bbc can't really use it as its occupied by downton abbey. Can't be moved to next year because then its CTM. Plus, didn't they cram last tango in halifax in four weeks? The paradise definitely slated for sept but could the bbc risk putting it on sunday aginst DA. It did well on tuesdays but sunday nights always best for period dramas????? We'll see but it does show how the bbc especially crams EVERYTHING intro autumn/winter????????

So much for restoring the traditions of the FA Cup. BBC are happy enough to vandalise the traditions when it suits them.

And since when is the BBC part of the "commercial world" ?

Hehe come on George, don't let it ruin your day! Do something nice to take your mind off it. Perhaps watch The Apprentice Final tonight .

The BBC has of course got to maximise the value of the rights for the license fee payer. A later kick off means more people watch, which means the rights are better value for money.
