I disagree. Splash established itself in its first series as the surprise success, and if casting is good and the feel of this series is retained, it could win the war of the ratings over Doctor Who. I don't think it would be necessary to bump the news; either keep You're Hired on BBC2 or schedule it in the post-news slot at 10:35pm. It's not a 'primetime' show and it's a bit strange that the spin-off ended up occupying the 9pm slot on BBC1 when that's where the main show should have been in the first place.

If there was no Doctor Who in 2014, that'd cause a meltdown in Who fandom, thousands of complaints that the BBC don't want to have to deal with. More importantly for the beeb Worldwide would go mad about lack of new product to merchandise. I'd suspect they'll still aim for a run of 12 in autumn, if that's not feasible a short run of 4 or 5.

Doctor Who is fine, it just hasn't been helped by erratic scheduling and having the most recent series being split across two years. Without the consistent annual schedule it had in the first four years of its revival it's difficult for the audience to keep track of it IMO. I think they need to drop this recent habit of having a 'midseason hiatus' - it's a good way of losing viewers who aren't guaranteed to come back again a few months down the road.
Nevertheless it continues to timeshift remarkably well - the audience is there, they're just not all watching it live. I would have said the upcoming 50th anniversary special plus the regeneration at Christmas will help recapture some of that buzz that appears to have dissipated but then we have to wait at least 8 months before the next series.

I think January is a good period to launch a new series but apparently Moffat has indicated there wont be a new series until autumn 2014 with a new doctor and a strong writing team.

i see your point but at the end of the day the bbc launched the paradise on tuesday (its original intended slot was sunday 9pm january). Pretty much all the tuesday night dramas get 5-6 million (and also most weeknight dramas also) and they come back for regular seasons. You are right though, that with sunday nights, expectations are much higher which is why I thought ripper street should have done better esp. with a CTM lead in.
The paradise is likely to get higher ratings this time as last yr it was rushed really early into transmission with little promotion (I didn't even know it was on). If anything, selfridge may have provided some inadvertent promotion for it plus series 2 of the paradise is meant to be BRILLIANT- better than series 1 (mate works in production). You are right though, that they might put in on sunday night autumn 8pm (what was the bbc showing in that slot last yr). X factor is likely to have a 'dancing on ice' decline unless sharon osbourne can perform miracles and the talent improves dramatically (nor so sure)?????????

Most of the teen shows have almost gone apart from Carrie Diaries, they're being more bold with their programming with shows like Reign, The Tomorrow People, The 100 etc I so think they need a comedy block and perhaps a family drama,

I think his series of Lark Rise took time to take off also but there is pressure on a drama to pull in a certain amount of viewers it seems as The White Queen has shown that the executives wanted more from it. Good to hear that the next series will improve on the first. The Antiques Roadshow was BBC One choice of opposition against the X Factor results. But if The Paradise were to be played out at 8pm it would have the bounce of the Strictly Come Dancing results show and viewers waiting for the beginning of Downton Abbey. A high enough share would be all that it would need to get against the X Factor results. The Antiques Roadshow got around 5 million region in that slot. As you say The Paradise was intended as a Sunday evening show. Last Tango would be better scheduled in the week.
Be interesting to see how the Apprentice has fared with unusual scheduling. Its turned into a good series and down to the casting and editing. Alex in particular well cast as an Alan Partridge type with comedy moments throughout. The contestants breathed new life into an old format. The scheduling will have an effect on the final ratings though unfortunately and I would imagine BARBs figures to be a bit higher by next week as people use catch up.

The share of 27.6% is pretty dismal too. Just a disappointment all around. I don't think they'll be repeating last night's scheduling trick again next year!

This series has averaged 5.97m (25.6%). That represents a fall of about 5% (if we're going on the figures) - the share is virtually the same.
The final figure could have been so much more if the BBC hadn't ballsed up the scheduling.

Its the sort of programme that i would have wanted to watch and chat online about at same time. I did go on iplayer live and rewind but i thought **** it. I'm glad overall it rated lower than before.
