Hehe, you'd think it was possible, reading this thread, but look at the officials:

Code:
1	EASTENDERS (FRI 1959)	8065
2	EASTENDERS (MON 2000)	7895
3	EASTENDERS (TUE 1929)	7651
4	EASTENDERS (THU 1927)	7449
Compared with:

Code:
1	CORONATION STREET (MON 1933)	8927
2	CORONATION STREET (MON 2029)	8898
3	CORONATION STREET (FRI 2032)	8301
4	CORONATION STREET (WED 1931)	8066
5	CORONATION STREET (FRI 1932)	7880
(including HD, excluding +1)

Not such a vast difference is there? And that's not including iPlayer on devices other than the TV.

Aside from sacking Jay Hunt, have they anything else to fall back on? Do they have money issues?”

They spent more on programming than ever before last year but as we said that just wasn't reflected on screen - both in the quality of programming and the ratings. However much they may be spending it seems they're spending in the wrong areas to make an impact.

Don't forget the Friday ratings were Wimbledon influenced, EastEnders got the Wimbledon lead-in whilst Coronation Street was dented a bit.

Quite surprised that a fairly minor Coro St episode on Fri 8.30 beat Eastenders' much trailed big exit episode in the consolidated ratings.

And that, of course, excludes +1.

Coronation Street is easily the nation's favourite now. EE are getting desperate with all these midnight announcements every couple of weeks containing trivial information even a diehard fan would struggle to get too excited about.

Well lets put it this way, not enough of a difference to deserve all of the flack that it gets including suggestions that it should be axed.

And in the tit for tat argument we shouldn't forget the 3 repeat and the omnibus too.

Exactly. And even without +1 EE is a million or so behind and it just seems to be in terminal decline at the moment rather than having a dip.

There is still clearly a place for it on BBC1 and an audience but it shouldn't be the show that defines BBC1 - their promo pushes both on and off screen should be elsewhere and EE would actually benefit from just getting on with things quietly for a year or two. What they really need to do is axe the likes of Sharon and Phil and all the other oldies who've returned to the show as they can't get a job elsewhere just to rehash the same old stories over and over again. People aren't tuning in because they've seen it all before. From the BBC's point of view too axing these old hasbeens would trim the wage bill too - I suspect the likes of Steve McFadden and Jessie Wallace are on relatively high salaries.

Corrie seems a lot fresher - their cast seems to continuously evolve and while of course they recycle storylines too they just seem to be more character than storyline driven. And their older cast is made up with people who've been with the show for years, not people who made their name on the show, made a break for it and then came back with their tail between their legs.

The BBC has issued a press release to the media with an embargo for the story to be released at midnight. EastEnders' official twitter account is describing it as "VERY exciting" news.

Is this the same Coronation Street you referred to as the "ailing Northern soap" on Saturday after it was predictably and unsurprisingly dented by Andy Murray's semi-final match (but was still only marginally behind an EastEnders episode that was gifted an inheritance of over 13 million)?

Absolutely, that chart makes horrible reading for Channel 4. Just five programmes over 1.5m? That is awful.

Compare that to BBC2, the channel it has traditionally competed with, and there are 25 programmes over 1.5m. And that's in the first week of Wimbledon when because so many hours are taken up by tennis there are far fewer programmes, meaning the chart would normally drop off a cliff. In fact the last time it had 25 or more programmes over 1.5m in the first week of Wimbledon was 13 years ago in 2000.

BBC2 knows what it's about now and is self confident, increasing it's share with all the daytime cuts shows just how well prime time is doing.

I don't agree. and Regarding Steve he never really left EastEnders, Yes he took a break in what 2004/2005 but that's after being with the show since 1990

Axing the characters that people know and love will turn viewers away. Phil,Kat,Sharon,Dot,Ian ect are popular with viewers.

Gobsmacking for the tennis - imagine if Djokovic had won a set? We'd be looking at the most watched show of the year officially for sure. As it is... we'll see. A few people may want to relive the moment.

The Formula One highlights benefited from the lead in and the rest of the evening did well. The White Queen appears to have levelled out but we'll see how Law & Order UK affects it next week.

Mamma Mia predictably struggled but Tipping Point and All Star Mr. and Mrs. both did alright in terms of share. Top Gear still seems slightly on the low side to me. Big Brother has become very consistent for Channel 5.

Agreed. As someone was saying earlier, maybe now that the focus is all on a few key hours mostly in primetime, the controller and her staff have more time to think properly about commissioning and scheduling?

We got a few ratings in the officials for programmes booted over from BBC One, some of which we didn't get the overnights for:

Code:
11	POINTLESS CELEBRITIES (SAT 1903) 2.14
14	THE ONE SHOW (FRI 1900) 2.05
28	CELEBRITY MASTERMIND (SAT 1832) 1.23
30	A QUESTION OF SPORT (FRI 1930) 1.20
Brekkie

Obviously we all know trending on Twitter means nothing when it comes to ratings, but The Guardian have started a weekly top 10 based on tweets during the show and in the 30 minutes before and after.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/series/social-tv

Quite interesting in some respects and no surprise TV networks examine it closely. Interesting seeing how during Skins the tweets noticeably spike during the ad breaks - and I guess rather than taking away people from the TV during the ads people tweeting are watching them in the background at least rather than channel hopping or leaving the room.

Thanks for those. I think that kind of backs up that on that occassion the BBC were probably wrong to move Murray to BBC1 - I think they'd have got higher ratings across the two channels for the 7pm hour if Murray had stayed on BBC2.

After his reaction today when Holly told him on This Morning that his name was the new Cockney rhyming slang for Curry (which he described as 'something to fall back on' in posterity) surely East Enders saw their chance and Andy Murray is joining the cast.

I suspect C5 would take inconsistent considering the consistent ratings the show does actually get. The show gets a lot of posts here for something that doesn't move far from 1.2-1.3m - and hasn't really for the entire C5 era as far as the main show is concerned.

For those wondering, the total TV audience yesterday was 21.7 million at the conclusion of the Tennis, but dropped back to 16.2 million an hour later before the usual evening rise, peaking with 22.9 million at 21:15.

I say "peaking with", it appears there was a lot of on the night timeshifting concerning Top Gear:

19:55 - 18.4 million
20:00 - 18.8 million
20:05 - 19.2 million
20:10 - 19.4 million
20:15 - 19.8 million
20:20 - 20.9 million
20:25 - 21.1 million
20:30 - 21.4 million
20:35 - 21.6 million
20:40 - 21.8 million
20:45 - 22.0 million
20:50 - 22.5 million
20:55 - 22.4 million
21:00 - 22.5 million
21:05 - 22.8 million
21:10 - 22.5 million
21:15 - 22.9 million
21:20 - 21.9 million
21:25 - 21.3 million

Definitely close to a million people timeshifted Top Gear and watched on the night.
