Dave HD?

Hey,
I've just noticed (

) while watching some stuff on Dave/Dave Ja Vu that the DOG says 'Also in HD'.
Is this only via Sky? I thought considering I now have Freeview HD its a bit odd I cant get Channel 5 or Dave in HD yet?

They are Satellite/cable only stations AFAIK.

At the moment, there is only space for 5 HD channels on Freeview, 4 of which are permanently in use.

Channel 5 were expected to take the spare HD slot, but withdrew their application.

Proposed changes could increase the availability of HD slots to about 15, but whether broadcasters will use them or not is another matter.

Freeview only has a limited amount of space (bandwidth) to broadcast HD.

Even with Sky you still have to pay an additional premium for the HD channel pack before being able to receive significantly more than what's on Freeview HD. There's also further premiums for the HD movies and HD sports channels. Ho hum

I have three DRX890 Sky+ boxes here all in daily use with the hd package would not be without any of them, cant stand sd. money well spent.

Dave is just old stuff recorded before HD. You can't invent pixels and make old SD into HD, despite what dudes with upscale devices will tell you. Dave HD = Dave SD.

Plenty of HD on Dave, just look at the EPG - Road to Red Bull, On Thin Ice, Man v Food, Top Gear, Storage Hunters etc etc are all in HD.

SD and HD on Dave are easily distinguishable, as they are on any other channel, maybe you're viewing it from too far away.

Average bitrate for Dave HD is 9240 kBit/s - Dave on Freeview is between 4000-6000 kBit/s - you are also comparing MPEG2 to MPEG4 which will never give you a true comparison.

Don't subscribe if you see no difference - simples.

Any HD channel will upscale if it's not broadcasting a HD programme, this is nothing new, what the channel is not allowed to do is pass it off as HD, which as far as I know none do.

No its not, even if that were the case with some older shows new stuff appears there eventually which was made in the HD era.

BBC HD (for example) is certainly not SD upscaled to 1080i.

But all programmes delivered on tape / file in the past two years have been HD ...
And many before that .... so it is decreasing repeats in SD .
