Katie Hopkins
Apparently Katie Hopkins, that erstwhile wannabe Apprentice to Lord Sugar has made known that she judges the desirability of her children’s friends by their forename.
Little Kylies, Kyles, Brandons, Chantelles, Chardonnays etc. strike horror into the heart of Ms.Hopkins because such names denote lower class and as such are totally unsuitable playmates for India, Poppy and Maximillian William ….. yes after decrying geographical names (Brooklyn Beckham was mentioned) she called her first child after a country! She excused this on the grounds that India is a beautiful country. Some might find the odd glass of chilled Chardonnay beautiful – but in Ms Hopkins it seems to denote cheap, working class. Do you think that she might invite a little boy named Moet and a little girl named Chandon to India’s birthday party – would Miss Cristal or young Mr. Dom Pérignon fit in with Poppy and Maximilliam? Has it ever occurred to Ms Hopkins that the social circles she holds in such esteem might shudder before crossing young India off their list of suitable friends? When Holly Willoughby defended the working class and pointed out that her own daughter was named Belle, Katie’s weak response was that any child of Holly would be beautiful. Anna May Mangan defended her Irish immigrant roots robustly and many callers phoned in to quote their academic success despite (or because of) their disadvantaged background. Katie was unmoved. Her children cannot be held responsible for their mother – but if they grow up friendless whilst their working class peers embrace all classes and cultures, then they have only one person to blame – Ms. Katie Hopkins. Of course it could be that she’s not really a celebrity – not someone whose opinion is sought or considered. Perhaps this is nothing more than a publicity ploy by a one time reality contestant. |

I saw that interview, I don't know what planet that woman is from but it is surly not plant Earth. Do people really stop to think about their class before naming their new born? I think not.

I feel really sorry for her kids. What a nightmare of a mother she is.

Any pretensions she may have for her kids will immediately be undone when their peers google Ms Hopkins. She'd do better to keep her trap shut and get a proper job.

Katie is a very capable person who chose to become a desperate media whore, in my opinion. She's nothing but a professional troll. Boring has-been. There's no point having all that ability and becoming a professional wind-up merchant.

Ah but don't forget - Katie Hopkins isn't little India Poppy or Max's mum...... Mrs whatever her married name is!
She can state her opinions without necessarily affecting the kids popularity at school or with the other kids parents! |

But the best thing about that interview...? Holly Willoughby telling Hopkins that was enough! She showed more class than Hopkins any day, by not being a bitch and stopping a further snobbish onslaught by an outdated, bigoted old bint, that has no class, no finesse despite the plummy accent.

I have lost a lot of respect for Katie recently. I did respect her a lot - I appreciate the way that she made a name for herself by being entertaining on The Apprentice whilst simultaneously being great on the tasks (not many others have done both) and I like the way she isn't afraid to state her opinion even if it's controversial - but I don't understand what she's on about here. What is wrong with a child's name? Even if she doesn't personally like it, it doesn't mean that the child will be anything like their parents, or that her children will become like their friends. It's ridiculous. I also don't understand the names she is talking about. Even though I wouldn't discriminate against a child called it, I can see her point about the name Chardonnay - it is a little odd to name a child after a wine - but what's wrong with Tyler? That's quite a common surname that has become a first name. And I didn't get her point about having children named after geographical locations, but defending naming her own daughter India. And what is wrong with months of the year? Names like June are quite traditional, middle-class names - I have a great-aunt called June.
It's a shame, because in the past I did have an odd level of admiration for Katie Hopkins, but she's gone completely down in my estimations with this (and also with something she said about overweight people in employment recently). |

I liked the part where she admitted she was ugly. It was the only part of the argument where she almost wrong-footed someone. Imagine being comprehensively out-debated by Phillip Schofield...

The very strange thing is, after Paul, the person she got on with best on The Apprentice was Ghazal. I wouldn't have thought that would be on her list of 'sensible' names.

I mean...she doesn't actually give a shit about anybody's name. It's just an oblique way of chasing after the working class in a way that she thinks she can try and be funny doing. Making fun of the "silly" names working-class people call their kids isn't exactly fresh. It's just "Wayne and Waynetta and Frogmilla" given a 2010s gloss.
Although if she's going after "Chardonnay" her references are about 10 years out of date anyway. |

The funny thing is where I'm from, Poppy is known for being a bit of a chavvy name.
Obviously I wouldn't at all judge and I have nothing against people called Poppy (or their children ), but yeah, it's all subjective.Besides I think most people would rather have their children play with normal, well-adjusted children, than ones called India and Maximillian whose mother is an adulterous reality tv show media whore. She should realise that in the eyes of parents, she's not really any better than Katie Price - who, it so happens, shares her name! And thus the argument comes back to bite her. |
