Well that's unlucky for me as I won't be able to access my Xbox till Monday at the earliest.

Will sign up regardless but I wonder what new stuff they will be testing apart from the ditching Microsoft Points stuff?

Signed up and ready to go. I hope the new dash looks nice, I read the white backgrounds for menus is being replaces with darker tones. There's also a few areas I'd like to see performance increases, such as the time it takes for the your storage devices to show, or the Indie game boxart etc. I hope they iron out the last few issues with the dash.

Doubt you will have missed much.

i didnt bother.

Dont see the point in them doing this open BETA.

Half the users wont report bugs or anything.

Have signed up, wonder if they will include the new achievement system on the 360?

Hope they don't mess it up, I hated the original metro update but I do like the current one.

Signed up. I like these annual tweaks they do, keeps things looking fresh. So long as they don't add any stupid things... like more ads etc, but I doubt that'll be in the update.

Word of warning to you. Don't convert your points.

1 point is worth 0.85p right now (buying direct from MS is 8.50 for 1000 points).

So if you have 1200 points you've essentially got 10.20 sitting there, and this is what they'll convert it to.

The trouble is they've taken the opportunity to increase the pricing of downloads so now that 1200 points download will cost 11.99.

From GAF:
400 points (3.40) games are now 4.49 - 1.09 / 32%Increase
800 points (6.80) games are now 8.99 - 2.19 / 32% Increase
1200 points (10.20) games are now 11.99 - 1.56 / 15% Increase
1600 points (13.60) games are now at 14.99 - 1.39 / 10% Increase

Hence why MSP were the best solution as in the UK we got great deals, cheaper than both STEAM and PSN. Now we pay for it. Everything gone up, even indie games at 80MP which worked out at 68p, are now 89p but hey, so long as we get to pay in REAL money right?? right? much better.

Microsoft adding a "feature" which they say is better for us, but ends up only benefiting them?

Very strange, I don't recall them trying anything like this before.

Oh, wait.....

It is nothing to do with being a points or real money system.

Points still have a value. They've just taken this opportunity to put prices up.

Points have a real money value right now. Nothing changes that and nothing to do with getting a 'good deal'.

Right now you're essentially paying 10.20 for an 800 item, because that is the value of 800 points.

And yet 800MSP to those not taking part in the Beta (or on Xbox.com) costs 6.80 (1000 MSP = 8.50).

10.20? Not sure what you're talking about.

Technically this is due to the currency conversion and we therefore get stitched up in the UK as per usual, compared to their local currency MSP are more here in the UK and in the US they are less. If MS are to charge in "real" money then tax needs to be applied, hence the extra fee.

MSP was a loophole in avoiding tax as you were buying MS points (essentially Monopoly money) which could be reimbursed against items from their marketplace. It's a very consumer friendly approach. It's not simply case of "they've taken the opportunity to increase the pricing of downloads ".

Microsoft ditched MSP due to so many people moaning about them, having to buy extra points/go through extra menus they didn't want.

All this means is it brings us in line with the other services, I can live with that personally but I still think MSP was the better solution. It has EVERYTHING to do with getting a better deal as you could buy 1000 MSP even cheaper online and new releases would cost considerably less compared to the price on PSN or Steam. Now that's not going to be an option.

Sorry, that was a typo on my part - I meant 1200 points not 800.

1200 points is essentially you topping your account with 10.20. So all they've done is raise the prices.

But was VAT in the UK not included in the purchase of points cards? if so no loophole.

The sad thing about all this is that MS could have taken this opportunity to lower digital prices and make digital look a lot more attractive in a bid to kick start their digital dream and migrate people from physical to digital. All this move has done is reinforce the view that digital is just an exercise in extracting more profit from customers.

With these changes in mind its another sigh of relief they backed down on all the anti consumer measures proposed for XBox 1 because I dread to think of the cost of games in the long term future had those come into effect.

Still this is beta and anything could change before this is released to the public.

Its a good move going with real currency, sadly its just been poorly executed.

VAT is applied to everything, I'm talking about sales tax.

Please explain to me why MS should charge less than Sony for digital content? Also how does this cast a negative reflection on them if they choose to stay in line with the competition.
