Radio DJ Neil Fox Blasts Tulisa's X Factor Career: 'We're In Such A Fickle World That Everyone Has To Be Famous'

Former Pop Idol judge isn't impressed with the trend for younger mentors

Neil Fox has had his fair share of experience in shaping the future of pop stars, both in his career as a DJ and his short stint as a judge on one of the very first music talent shows, Pop Idol. The radio personality has now hit out what he sees as inexperienced judges on talent shows, singling out former X Factor star Tulisa.

Having attended the Arqiva Commercial Radio awards last night, EntertainmentWise caught up with the radio DJ to find out his take on the decision to bring back Sharon Osbourne as a judge on the new series of The X Factor, following Tulisa's departure:

"The reality is they know more about the industry because they’ve been in it longer and that’s the good thing but there’s no doubt if you’re an audience they don’t know these people," Neil said in reference to Sharon, Louis Walsh and co.

"We’re in such a fickle world now that everyone has to be famous, like 'get Tulisa on she’s from a pop band'. I think the reality is if you’re a kid watching her you know who she is but the danger is when her single doesn’t even make the top 20 or her albums sells 23 copies that week then the moment she says 'Oh, I don’t think you’re very good', then really they can just turn around and go 'You know what, neither are you!'"

Neil is a big fan of Sharon and her return to the show that she starred on with Simon Cowell, Louis and Dannii Minogue six years ago:

"The people who really know their stuff and have been doing it for a long time they can look at it in a very perceptive and experienced way," the DJ muses.

The DJ went on to tell us that he would like to see a guest judge format on shows like The X Factor in future: "Maybe get a guest judge every week that comes in you know somebody that’s young, someone that’s hot every week because that way you can add credibility week by week by week so that the music buying public will go and say 'wow there we are. We’ve finally got Dizzee Rascal this week'".

What do you think of Neil's views on Simon Cowell's talent show? Will Sharon's return prove to be the re-boot the show needs?

i like the idea of an alternating guest judge each week during the live shows (but not during the auditions). an unbiased 5th person who's not connected to any acts and literally just has to comment on what they see infront of them.

I disagree with Foxy implying that a singer needs to sell loads of records to be a good judge. There are plenty of singers working today that don't sell well, but would be good judges. Likewise, Mariah on Idol proved that selling millions of records doesn'y make you a good judge.

As did Britney Spears.

Seeing pictures of Tulisa with her chavtastic mates on the plane/in Ibiza are making me cringe.

Thank god she's off the show.

That doesnt make any sense, Tulisa, Nicole and Kelly didn't have many top 20 songs and yet were great judges

They had Alexandra once, and as far as I am aware she didn't go down that well.

Well she was just in place of Kelly and so was obviously somewhat bias to Kelly's category.

I think it would be good to have a fifth judge that isn't linked at all to any category. They'd be able to give genuine criticism without having to worry about swaying the public towards their own acts, because they wouldn't have any.

Plus, if there was one each week, ITV wouldn't have to spend that much on booking huge stars to guest judge, because it would only be for one night and so the money wouldn't be exactly be big bucks.

Well she's had 6 including Baby Love, three of these were top 3 hits and one top 10 single and Baby Love charted at 14 I believe

According to the internet, don't hold your breath charted at #1 and her recent single Boomerang charted at #2 (and was #1 in the midweeks). Both of these positions happened in the UK charts.

She's not huge, but definitely successful and has the right to judge contestants. When you put it into perspective, her and Kelly are probably the most famous people to judge X Factor UK.

I think he just comes across as a bit bitter. The format has long moved on since he was on the panel. The irony is, Tulisa (along with Kelly, but shes now on XF USA so its an irrelevant point) is the most appropriate person of all the 'celebrity' judges to have the role. She worked her way up in the industry, she didn't go on a talent show and she had a fair amount of success off the back of it. Meanwhile, Dannii, Cheryl and Nicole all started out on a talent show and got lucky from there. Thats not to discredit them, it tends to be the judges with the least credentials that turn out to be the best anyway.

She's done about as well as Tulisa or Kelly, which is who she was compared to in that post.

Nicole is much more successful that Tulisa.

Nicole is far more successful in the UK than them both. Tulisa and Kelly's albums flopped, and Nicole has had more top 10 singles as a solo artist than Tulisa. Plus her album also made it into the top 10....Tulisa's barely scraped the top 40 even after heavy promotion.

The quote was "Tulisa, Nicole and Kelly didn't have many top 20 songs".

Kelly has had 8, Nicole has had 6 and Tulisa has only released 3 singles, all of which have been top 20. None of them have had what I'd call 'many' top 20 songs.

what I meant is that fame, stardom etc dont always guarantee a person to be a promising judge (birtney, mariah...)

This. Alex may not have gone down well, but she spoke the truth. And if you're in a contestant's position you need brutal honesty.

Mariah Carey is a legend, hell the amount of #1s she penned herself is incredible. The woman knows her stuff, but was not in a mentor role. In an XF capacity I reckon she'd be great.

Agreed. She dragged the show down something awful. She is such a ridiculous person.
