So we now know that John Hurt is the 'Dark Doctor' - and the 9th incarnation of this Timelord. (Retroactively making Ecclestone the 10th, Tennant the 11th & Smith the 12th. )

Well, Moffat *did* promise the 50th would re-write Who's History!

Also, we know the Valeyard (the Doctors' Dark side) appears "Somewhere between the Doctor's 12th (Smith's) and 13th (TBC's) regeneration."

This seems to fit with the emergence of John Hurt's *Dark* Doctor at 'The Fall of The 11th Doctor.' (As Smith is only the 11th of his 12 incarnations to take the name Doctor.)

So presumably, therefore - we take a very small leap to get to the conclusion - John Hurt is the Valeyard.

Actually, until the 50th anniversary story is shown, or unless Moffat goes on record with any of this, we don't actually 'know' any of the above. It's all supposition.
To quote the late JNT - stay tuned...

Excellent. Let's ask Digital Spy to simply shut the Forum until November, in that case.

I'd kindly disagree a bit...I think the whole thing is a "technicality" gag. Yes, he's the "9th" but not the Doctor. Everyone else kept the "promise" to be "The Doctor" except for Hurt, who did something un-Doctorish or decided he was NOT the Doctor. Remember, in "The Beast Below" 11 says something to the effect that he'll have to call himself something other than The Doctor if he is forced to go ahead with lobotomizing the space whale.

(Quote:
The Doctor: "Look, three options. One, I let the star whale continue in unendurable agony for hundreds more years. Two, I kill everyone on this ship. Three, I murder a beautiful and innocent creature as painlessly as I can. And then I find a new name, 'cos I won't be the Doctor any more." )

So yes, in the end, technically the numbering does not change. Hurt isn't the Doctor even though he's derived from the same man. At the end of the 50th I bet we'll get a speech about "Well, you're STILL not the Doctor" to keep the numbering intact, or some kind of reset button that erases the Hurt Doctor (but how, if he's the Time War Doctor...who fights the Time War?)

As for the multiple Valeyard name drops between "The Dream Lord" and what the GI said...well, I don't think Hurt is the Valeyard. But again you could be right...TECHNICALLY it works.

Still surprised that the current writing team is using the Valeyard concept at all, to be honest. But then again, we did get the Nimon last year...

Don't be silly - that's clearly not what I meant.
I was merely pointing out that your original post claimed that we apparently 'know' various facts about the Hurt Doctor, when in fact we don't actually know anything of the sort. Nothing about the Hurt Doctor is certain at this point.

I love all the wonderful theories and certainly don't want the speculation to stop.

Wait, isn't saying that he's both the 9th incarnation and the Valeyard ("Somewhere between the Doctor's 12th and 13th regeneration") contradictory? Sorry if I misunderstood But I'm pretty sure that by the end things will be reset, and Hurt will somehow be erased.

I like to think John Hurt as being 8.5 or 9.5 we have a 10.5 and now an 8 or 9.5.
