It's what I would ask for on death row. Well... that and a pardon.

I also thought that as soon as I read the thread. I had to quickly make dinner to avoid going out and getting chips!

Thank goodness I have been raised on seasonings and spices other than salt and pepper. Barf @ the dull bland egg and chips

Who said you can't add seasonings and spices to egg & chips?

In the past I've used spices and seasonings to create home made oven chips/wedges for chips + egg. Or added a dash of tabasco sauce to an egg yolk.

Alternatively, use different types of eggs - duck eggs, or maybe even quails eggs.

Use sweet potato chips, or roast parsnips or carrots instead.

Chips + egg certainly doesn't have to be dull and bland, but personally I like the simplicity of basic chips + egg.

Aww, loved the egg that way! Don't think I've eaten egg & chips for years - calories!

I love egg and chips, but I normally throw something else into the mix too like a sausage, bacon, gammon or sliced ham. We have it once a week for dinner.

Funnily enough I found myself in a Sainsburys café recently, and there on the menu was ham, egg and chips! It was a taste of heaven! Yum, yum!

You obviously haven't tried very much if you think that's one of our finest meals. Get a bloody grip of your life.

Nobody is implying it is one of our finest meals, just a simple pleasure that hits the spot now and again. I suggest you get a grip.

I think you're the one who needs to get a grip. Fair enough, chips + egg is not haute cuisine, but that doesn't mean people can't enjoy the meal none-the-less.

And FWIW, I've tried a wide range of foods from across the world, and chips + egg ranks pretty highly in all the dishes I've tried. It's simple, tasty and comforting, and can really hit the spot sometimes in the way that Heston Blumenthal's "sounds of the sea" (or whatever it is) can only dream of.

To be fair, the OP did actually say "Absolutely lovely probably one of Britains finest meals" but like you say, hits the spot now and again.

I do love dipping my chips into a runny fried egg or two. Luuuuuuvly job.

Yum. Simple and delicious. Although to be precise it should be Chips and Eggs since a single egg is never enough.
Duck eggs fry up nicely and make a nice variation on the theme.
Make it our National Dish, I say!

Although not the hautest of haute cuisine, you can tell a lot about how good a cook someone is by the way they fry an egg.
Some greasy spoon caffs will get eggs and chips just right, and some will cock it up big time.

To be fair a lot of the western world rate omlettes, scambled eggs and other egg dishes the world over are rated quite highly. You can only improve it by adding chips

Sounds more like all day breakfast territory. No complaints there though

I can def recommend poached egg and chips as well, if only poached eggs were as flippin easy to do as fried but they are not, i have tried and failed miserably on lots of occasions.

Eggs are strange. Fried make me feel sluggish, poached not too bad and scrambled no problems at all so I nearly always opt for scrambled these days.

Two eggs, very gently fried in butter, fresh cut chips, bread and butter, plenty of pepper and a mug of strong tea is real comfort food

Called egg and chips in our house. Got to be local freerange eggs with bright yellow yolks and Slimming World chips.

Heat oven to 220C. Peel and chip your potatoes. Boil for 4 mins in slightly salted boiling water. Drain thoroughly.
Put in large, warmed roasting tin in single layer and spray with Fry-lite. In oven for about 30 mins. Shake them a few times during cooking time and respray if necessary. When they're all golden take them out and enjoy with S & P and vinegar.
