Discs not recognised
I have a 6 year old HXD870 HDD/DVD recorder which in the past was used to record videos onto a number of DVD+RW disks. A few months ago the programs were erased on my PC, cannot recall how, may have been using Nero. Now when I try and reuse those disks, the HXD870 will not reconise them as writeable. Cannot reformat them on the recorder or anything. The PC however, does treat them as blank disks. I have tried a variety of variations in reformatting and erasing them again on the PC, but the HXD870 just will not recognise them.
Can anyone suggest why this might be please? |

It might be that the DVD mech on the HXD870 is faulty, which unfortunately is an expensive repair.

Can anyone suggest why this might be please? In my case, there's nothing wrong with the Sony's drive as it is still happy with all my other discs, even others of the same brand from the same pack. It is to do with the way the discs were previously written on a PC. |

I have two Sony DVD recorders, both failed after mild use within the year. One was repaired under warranty, the other I left. Last year the repaired machine started with the "Disc Not Recognised" warning again.
My solution was to whip the lids off, and access the laser unit. Using a cotton wool bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol I cleaned the lens, then polished it with a dry bud. Had no problems with either machine ever since. Use a good brand of isopropyl - Isoclene is the best - it evaporates and takes the dirt with it. |

^^^ only do this as a last resort, and ensure the machine it out of warranty and NOT plugged into the wall.
