EPISODE ELEVEN 61/74:
Maurice walks slowly down the stairs holding a crying baby Eddard, who continues to sob uncontrollably, whilst also clutching the banister. Almost in a daze, Maurice opens the door and makes his way towards the pub. Dullagj is on his phone in Janine’s front garden and is reminded of his first months of parenting his baby boy.
Dan notices the light still on in lotty’s surgery and enters. He finds her locking up and looks at the clock which reads 9pm. A tired lotty greets him saying she’s just finished her paperwork and it’s almost time to come back to work. Dan asks if she has time for a quick chat. She tells him to wait at her car and she’ll be out in a minute.
Priscilla’s on her way to Angie’s Den for a night out when she sees Maurice in a confused state deliberating whether or not he should enter the pub. Approaching him she asks if he’s ok and takes hold of Eddy who’s still sobbing. Maurice says he needs to see sorcha, “I can’t do it Cilla….I can’t. I’ve tried and tried but I’m just not cut out for it. He KNOWS I’m not his dad!” Priscilla takes hold of his hand and walks him back towards his house where the door remains wide open with the baby in her left arm. Dullagj heads back indoors.
Dan and lotty sit in the car. Lotty laughs that she should’ve been an agony aunt enquiring what’s wrong now. Dan says he’s got a problem, “Emily’s brother, the one that stalked Scrabbler has moved in with Dot.” Lotty doesn’t see the problem. “The murder weapon ended up there by accident and Bevis doesn’t know it’s there. Thing is, that time I rang the police to test his loyalty, I said that he killed Emily, afraid that wouldn’t be enough to make an arrest….I said he did it with a doggy doorstep which I did. Gary has a private investigator working on the case…what if he puts everything together and goes to the police and they find my prints on the thing and her blood.” Lotty asks if they really made an arrest on such a lack of evidence. Dan asks what should he do? Lotty replies that he either hopes he doesn’t put two and two together or retrieves the doorstep somehow.
In the pub, Shirley is enjoying having Mick working with her behind the bar whilst sorcha remains coy in front of him. Mick says Linda’s gonna love Shirl’s pink barnet, “If she owned this place, she’d call it ‘The Princess Di’ he jokes. Mona’s eyes twitch. Whilst he’s otherwise engaged, mona asks Shirley if that was directed at her but she tells her to stop being so paranoid. Shirley says her mother said she’d be in the gutter by 20, if only she knew what a beautiful gutter it would be and that she’d be 50.
Priscilla goes down to Maurice having got Eddy back off to sleep. Maurice says she’s a natural unlike him. Priscilla tells him he needs to get a grip, “Eddy can sense your negative energy. It’s all in your head. You need to relax. He’s only been home a few weeks and it’s bound to take you a while to get the hang of it considering this is your first time and all.” Maurice says he’s trying but it’s relentless, 24 hours a day “I haven’t had a proper night’s kip either and it’s all just taking its toll.” Priscilla tells him that needs to open up about this to sorcha, he can’t keep bottling it all up.
Dan walks home along the street lit market looking around him, taking everything in and wondering how long it’ll be before it’s all taken away from him. Over at Janine’s, dullagj informs her that the private detective has agreed to start straight away but he won’t come cheap, “He said that next month the team searching for her will be scaled back even more as it’ll be a year since she was last seen alive.” A determined dullag says he’s going to do everything in his power to find her, “I want to make it up to my baby sis. If she’s alive and doesn’t want to know then so be it, at least I’ll know that she’s alive and well. Either way I just want to know. If Gary did harm her, then he deserves everything that’s coming his way.”
Sorcha returns home to find Maurice asleep on the sofa. Not wanting to wake him, she just puts a blanket over him and heads up to bed, not before kicking off her high heels. Over at the B&B, Toni stares at the razor in the bathroom. Looking at her hairy legs, she knows they’re in bad need of a shave but she’s afraid of letting the razor touch her in case she cuts herself again. Her shaky hand grabs hold of the razor and she looks at herself in the mirror. She drops the razor and runs out of the bathroom.
Also tonight, Zack begins to organise a surprise birthday party for Toni. Mo Mouse keeps schtum when Geraldine gets the trots realising she’s also eaten one of the laxative laden apples. Nicnacs meets up with Ken. Seeing the bruises on his arms, she tells him he’s not going back to his monster of a wife. Keyser’s on a mission to puncture Phil’s wheels but O…O stops him just in time.
At the psychiatric hospital, IanMandy is beginning to improve thanks to the medication and treatment and begins to open up to the psychiatrist. IanMandy thanks her for meeting him so late but there’s something he needs to get off his chest before bed. He says that his mind has become much clearer since receiving help as have some of the events leading up to his admission, “It’s like I had someone in my head yelling at me the whole time. Now it feels like they’re shouting in another room with the door shut.” The psychiatrist smiles saying that’s good and is a sign that he’s improving but what did he want to tell her? IanMandy goes to talk but the words don’t come out, she tells him to take his time. “The voices were telling me to get rid of Jake. Jake didn’t stab me…I stabbed myself!”
Toni sits on her bed with her newly shaven legs, used wax strips and a Minute Mart receipt lie beside her but as she tries to get off to sleep, she can’t help but get teary eyed as the loneliness takes hold of her.
Maurice is woken up again by sorcha getting up to give Eddy his feed when she steps on one of his squeaky toys and heads upstairs. Unable to take any more, he starts to pack his things into a rucksack swiftly. Sorcha is blissfully unaware in the nursery with the landing light shining in the door as she feeds the baby. Maurice sticks a cap on and proceeds over the landing and down the stairs, sorcha gets a fright seeing him passing and comes out onto the top of the landing enquiring where he’s going? Maurice is at the foot of the stairs and looks back up at them, unable to look her in the eye he says he’s received a text from his father and needs to get home to him asap. Sorcha cries, “When were you planning on telling me?” Maurice says he’s sorry, he has to go and will be in touch in the morning. Sorcha follows him as he leaves the house. Maurice walks off into the night.
Duff duff: Sorcha stands in the threshold of the door with the baby in one arm and his bottle in the other.
