The pushing and shoving is commonplace in sprint finishes I remember Sean Kelly pointing out on Eurosport. Neither of the two riders did anything wrong but if you crash as a result then you have to accept the consequences.

Which is why Cav has been penalised for it in the past. |

I know this happened to Renshaw in 2010 TDF, but I don't recall it happening to Cav, (in recent years anyway)

Standing by the Omega Pharma Quick Step bus as Mark Cavendish was taken to hsopital for checks, team manager Patrick Lefevere explained the circumstances of the crash.
“Mark had lived this sprint in his mind at least 100 times before. He was so focused, he wanted to win so badly. He told me that Simon Gerrans slowed down and he really wanted to get out and he pushed and Gerrans pushed back. And that's how he crashed. It was so important for him. He's been taken to hospital for checks and we just hope nothing's broken. If nothing's broken, then of course Mark will continue.” http://www.letour.fr/le-tour/2014/us...-continue.html |

Pushing and destablishing fellow riders who then fall and crash IS wrong.
Which is why Cav has been penalised for it in the past. Both riders knew what was going on. But there has always has been a strange precedent as pretty much all the sprinters have engaged in this activity but only Cavendish gets punished? Strange, eh? |

That other havent been punished, doesnt then mean Cavendish shouldnt be if he caused a crash. Its the shame its the talking point, rather than Kittel's sprinting, which again looks ominously like a changing of the changing of the generations. |

Ai, ai, ai, nasty, but it's the kind of thing TdF riders continue with - obviously he will sit at the back for the next few days.

The cobbles are on Wednesday, that's going to be painful for anyone with injuries.

Hopefully Cavendish will be able to continue and possibly even compete again towards the end of the tour.
http://www.theguardian.com/sport/201...ance-stage-one - quoted below "He wanted to get a clear run to the line but Gerrans did not yield because the Frenchman Bryan Coquard was to his left. Cavendish lost control of his front wheel and fell heavily on his right shoulder, with Gerrans, a stage winner and yellow jersey wearer last year, hitting the deck simultaneously. Cavendish said later that the crash was his fault, and that he would call Gerrans, to apologize. " and http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/28176625 "Mark Cavendish dislocated his right shoulder and suffered ligament damage after crashing near the end of the Tour de France's opening stage in Yorkshire. The Briton collided with Simon Gerrans during the sprint finish in Harrogate, which was won by Marcel Kittel. Cavendish is having an MRI scan and a decision on whether he will continue racing will be made on Sunday morning. " |

More from the OPQS team website: Quote:
Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team confirms that Mark Cavendish underwent further examination on his right shoulder after today's crash. http://www.omegapharma-quickstep.com...sh-update/1826
The imaging underlined ligament ruptures with an AC-joint dislocation, which causes him a lot of pain. A final decision on his participation in tomorrow's stage will be taken tomorrow morning. "I'm gutted about the crash today" Cavendish said. "It was my fault. I'll personally apologise to Simon Gerrans as soon as I get the chance. In reality, I tried to find a gap that wasn't really there .I wanted to win today, I felt really strong and in a great position to contest the sprint thanks to the unbelievable efforts of my team. Sorry to all the fans that came out to support - it was truly incredible." |

Mr Cavendish was at fault, he took a chance and lost out. Cest la vie. He is an arrogant individual at best of times, unfortunately for him today it backfired

That's cycling for you, he will probably hang around at the back for a week or so, and then when he feels better he'll start to contend again. It's not like football where people writhe around after a tap. Look up Johnny Hoogerland on YouTube to see how tough cyclists are.

If he cant compete, he is better off dropping out and getting fit again for a late season run. Still some major races left and the first half of Vuelta gives him a chance for some grand tour stage wins. No point just surving the tour for the sake of it and hurting himself more. |

And also neymar could have been further injured in the way he was taken off the pitch. |

On ITV, David Miller thought Cav had snapped his collar bone, so a separated shoulder, although extremely unpleasant, won't necessarily stop him carrying on. |

Footballers are plenty tough. They just pretend a lot. Which is why it was hard to know that neymar WAS really in a bad way the other night.
And also neymar could have been further injured in the way he was taken off the pitch. He should have been slid onto a stretcher not lifted up (like they do in modern rugby union these days with neck injuries) - it was madness as they knew it was his back. |
