Froome is about a minute behind the peloton........team mates coming back to bring him up

Could be a lot of crashes today even on the tarmac roads......

I'm not suggesting that they're doing anything wrong, but it is unfortunate that the job of Froome's teammates is to protect him, and yet he's gone down twice now and none of them have been involved or have gone down themselves!

Interesting comment on the official feed -

Quote:
“Four Team Sky riders are trying to bring Froome back to the peloton. Dave Brailsford said before the start that Richie Porte would also be a protected rider today as they envisage the necessity of changing leadership, shall Froome be too injured to defend his title in the coming days.”

well........I guess you could look at it the other way

If they weren't ready to go back for him they wouldn't be in the team !

Froome out of the Tour, not a good year for defending champions.

Looks like it. Abandon, it's official.
What a bloody shame. A great loss for the Tour.

Can only assume that the injuries he was carrying affected his bike handling.

Why didn't Bradley wiggins leave team sky last year if he wanted to do the Tour de France. I presume as a fromer champion he would be welcomed by many teams.

Even if Porte was riding as well as last year, which he isn't, he invariably has a bad day and loses 20 or 30 minutes. Brailsford should have had a plan B.

I would give my left kidney to see Geraint Thomas win the GC now. But I don't think he can.

Because he's under contract, and also because he was prepared to ride in support of Froome.

Wouldn't he know there are issues between them that prevent them probably working together.
Do contract's not work year by year then.

Brad's coming to the end of his career........he's 34.......I'm not sure that any of the big teams would take him on as a grand tour team leader now, and would he want to start again with a new team as a domestique ?

I think Wiggins is a free agent in 2015. Might be wrong, but I think that's the case. I'm not sure that any issues between Froome and Wiggins played much of a role here. More a case of not wanting to take more than one 'star' rider with all the potential issues that that creates. That was Brailsford's decision, though I personally think he got it wrong (more so now that Froome's done, obviously). Had Wiggins been picked, I think he would have done a good job riding for Froome and would have been a good plan B if Froome dropped out. Oh well..........

Nibali's being hampered by his own team.

Absolutely ridiculous they didn't neutralise this stage. Clearly terrible conditions given the terrain. No one wants to be deprived of the top cyclists leaving the Tour through injury but that's exactly what we are getting.

It's not lack of interest. Apart from the fact the Yorkshire stages were at the weekend, the population density and spread is different in France. Most of the towns they are going through have small populations (little employment so people move to the larger towns) and anyway, France has the same population as the UK but spread across 3x the land area.
