the breaks and groups on the road are interesting today......

You've got Tony Martin and one other out in front........then a big group of 20-odd including some 'danger' men like Rolland and several of his team mates.........then a minute or two back to the peloton with Astana having to ride to keep that big breakaway in check

It's a good job he didn't do any kind of celebration when he crossed the line. That would have been embarrassing for him.

It does happen once a year or so.

I think Eloy Teruel at the Tour Of California has won this year's award!

What they're calling 'the Kittel group' is about 6 minutes behind the peloton......I'm guessing these are the ones dropped on the first climb

Rolland's group is about three and a half minutes ahead of the peloton.......

One of the worst ones was in Spain a few years ago which was a mountain top finish........poor guy killed himself to get up the climb then raised his arms at the wrong point and someone sailed past him to the real finish a couple of hundred yards along......

Contador said he held something back for the sprint for the line but as he reached it he could see someone had already finished.

In other races Emma Pooley's return has received a boost. She has won a third stage in the Women's Giro.

Peter Kennaugh has closed out his win in the Tour of Austria - he defended his lead during the time trial on Saturday, and finished in the pack for the final sprint stage today. He's certainly one of Sky's future Grand Tour candidates now.

And Emma Pooley has won two stages in the Italian Giro Rosa - she holds the Green Jersey. Marianne Vos in the lead overall, as you'd expect.

And Dennis Menchov has failed a retrospective drugs test, so has been stripped of his results over the last few years. He's retired, so his ban is academic.

I'm a little surprised at just how much it sounds like some of the sprinters were suffering very early on in this stage. Those first couple of climbs weren't easy, but I didn't think Kittel would be in as much trouble as he was.

This day is starting to look good for Tony Martin, he's well capable of defending this lead over the 40k of descent and flat.

Gallopin is riding into the yellow jersey........looks like Astana are happy to let him have it as they're just riding tempo and not trying to close the gap

How come the GC contenders are letting this chasing group get away? Are they all knackered?

no........they're not concerned about the likes of Gallopin because they know he'll crumble the first time we have a mountain top finish.......

they've obviously looked at everyone in the break and they're not worried about any of them

Rolland might be a danger but he's 7 minutes down on GC before today so they can let him take 5 minutes back

It often suits a 'contender' to give up the yellow jersey if they think it's too early in the race because they don't want to have to defend it every day.......it would quite suit Nibali for Gallopin's team to do the chasing for a few days to try and hold on to the jersey..........Nibali's team can then take it easy for a few days saving themselves for the mountain climbs

Brammati in Martin's OPQS team car looks like he is going to get very animated again when his rider wins.

well done Tony Martin......

Gallopin comes in amidst the rest of the breakaway and rides into yellow ........just waiting for the peloton

Gallopin has 3'27 to make up

The gallopin group made about 5 minutes on the peloton

a few guys have put themselves back up the GC and into the top ten

Gallopin has only one and a half minutes lead on GC . He lost two minutes to Nibali yesterday. His time in yellow could be short lived given tomorrow's four first cat climbs.
