News from Wiggo! He has signed another 1 year contract at Sky, won't ride Grand Tours, and back to the track for Rio 2016.

Liked the little behind the scenes look just now showing the ITV crew setup and the boggy field they are currently stuck in.

It's raining

we appear to have 7 men in the break with another 3 chasing to get on

the groups......

Lead group - Giovanni Visconti (Movistar), Lieuwe Westra (Astana), Christophe Riblon (AG2R), Amaël Moinard (BMC), Thomas Voeckler (Europcar), Markel Irizar (Trek) and Arnaud Gérard (Bretagne)

3 chasers - Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and Jan Barta (NetApp).

Peloton at 4.32

Sagan and Rodrigues are just catching the lead group.........

Sagan has gone off on his own..........presumably there's a sprint point coming up. I guess he'll fade back into the peloton when that's passed.......can't imagine he's going for the stage win today !

Another group of 5 including Tony Martin have broken away from the peloton

It's a pretty active day !

Contador down.

He should get back into the peleton as they are not charging onwards but is this a mere graze or something worse?

Shouldn't his team be coming back to help him out? Apparently his bike frame snapped and he went down hard.

a couple of his team mates have come back...........Sean saying more should come back from the peloton

he's now 3 minutes down on the peloton ......although he's zooming past the back markers

P & P are saying riders aren't allowed to ride backwards, they can only stop and wait for another rider to reach them.

Curtains for Contador.

I think Wiggo did once ride backwards in a race ?

Contador struggling.........he's now 5 minutes back on Nibali and keeps going back to the car...........

He's out !

Contador has abandoned.

It is Nibali's to lose now. I cannot think of any other contenders that will really challenge him now.

Not a fan of the guy, but it sucks that Contador is out. Damn.

I seem to recollect something like that during the carpet tacks incident but the commentators often use the phrase "going backwards" to mean going backwards relative to other riders so it can be very confusing.

Makes it a much more open race

Impossible to see anyone other than Contador or Nibali before but there's a few guys who are not that far behind Nibali........there might half a dozen contenders now

My sentiments exactly .

Rumours are the frame of his bike broke.

I want Richie Porte to win now.

I think Porte will be much happier taking on Nibali in the mountains than he would have been taking on Contador........plus there'll be a few others.......Kwiakovski, Valverde, Rolland.......

Contador and Froome both go for the Vuelta ?

Wonder if Movistar are pondering the risks of trying to pretend that Quintana has been there and racing ever since the start ...

Christ, can you imagine the Vuelta lineup this year?

I wish ITV would support the Vuelta and the Giro like they do with the TdF with the same crew and commentators. They did try the Vuelta a couple of years but it was nowhere near as good having Gary/Ned in a London studio. And I missed Phil and Paul's commentary.

It's going to be a bun fight, isn't it?
What is it? Eight mountain top finishes and the last 8 or 9 days are hard.
