Anyone watching the Tour of Alberta ?

It's a hilly course rather than a mountainous one but Simon Yates has get himself into the polka dot jersey after a couple of stages......

I watched the LeMonde/Hinault documentary, televised after last night's ITV4 coverage of the Vuelta. It was interesting to see each person's take on the same series of events. But what really stood out was Kathy LeMonde, and her love and support for Greg.

I'm not a big fan of super-steep grades in GTs where a top pro cannot sustain a reasonably smooth cadence. Does today's final climb include the steepest short section in Vuelta history?

Quote:
“The first 4 km of the climb are easy with gradients around 2-4 %. In Olleros de Sabero, the road starts to kick up with 7-8 % for 2 km. This is followed by a very short flat section before the actual climb begins.

From Sortillo de Sabero, the following 2.3 km are uphill with a horrifying average gradient of over 15 % making it the steepest climb in the history of the Vuelta. There are numerous parts of over 20 % with the maximum gradient being almost 30 %.

Oh bum........looks like Eurosport are not showing live coverage of the Vuelta on Sunday......

Hour highlights in the evening........

With due respect to the Tour of Britain which they're showing live instead.......well, in the grand scheme of things it is a minor race compared to the Vuelta !

Brilliant stage today. Game on for podium places tomorrow and Monday. Froome's path up to front seemed blocked by riders falling back and motorbikes but he was through in next to no time. Mind games still going on between Sky and Tinkoff-Saxo?

Hesjedal's first individual win since the Vuelta 2009? Seems too long ago. Zaugg must be disappointed to get so close.

Not sure what ES are playing at with tomorrow's schedule. City centre crits are much more suited to recorded highlights. Like Logrono the other day it all comes down to the sprint on the final lap for position and a few seconds. Are they sharing on-the-ground presenters with ITV like in the women's ToB?

Off we go with the Tour of Britain - we get the whole stage today, 8 times round a big 13km circuit of Liverpool.

I understand the frustration with UK broadcasters, ignoring the final stage of a World Event to focus on a European Tour event with the highest category it can be.

For the casual sports fan like myself, I appreciate that we in GB can see one of Europes best races and on Saturday I will be in Brighton to support the event in the flesh.

So I get your upset, but also the desire even by Eurosport to tap into what will be a (I hope) well followed event.

In Liverpool, Kittel made it look easy even though his lead out was delayed and split by the sprint crash. Cavendish off to hospital with injured leg after earlier collision with a team car.

Glad that Niemiec held out to the end of the Vuelta stage. The steep finishing ramp split the Spaniards. Valverde as usual does little or nothing unless he believes he can drop the others. Contador must be frustrated he does not cooperate in putting time into Froome.

I lost count of the number of times Bertie looked back over his shoulder - looking like a nervous twitch. A couple of years younger and Purito would have romped away on the steeper final ramps.

Froome gained 7 secs yesterday and lost them again today. Queen stage tomorrow with four first category climbs.

That's some decision. And naturally he looks distraught but it seems he gave a tug on Rovniy's saddle which started the handbags fracas. Rovniy's still continues.

Edit: looks like he has also been disqualified.

Contandor seems to have the Vuelta wrapped up after winning today despite Froome's best efforts.

If the organisers had run a full length ITT on the final stage the race could have been undecided until Sunday.

Dan Martin on his fall into a ravine yesterday. He still finished with Froome: http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/othe...rves-1.1921036

I recorded the last 80 minutes. Really enjoyed it. Lemond came across as very hesitant? Is that the right word? Certainly looked like nobody was doping at that time.

Fignon looked absolutely distraught, didn't he.

Tour of Britain blown wide apart today by another miscalculation by the Peleton. Alex Dowsett has one stage to defend his lead and then the ITT which he excels in.

Yes, epic piece of riding from Alex Dowsett, just shows that these 6 men team races without radios can produce more drama than the formulaic tactics you often get in the majors.
