Kwiatkowski had a suffering stage looking completely spent at the finish. The cold got him or he started out ill?”

Obviously I've seen far worse crashes, but I think the positioning of the camera and the fact the mike picked up the clattering of the bike hitting the Tarmac so clearly somehow made that one more painful to watch. I rewatched it a few times to try to figure out what went wrong and found myself flinching every time.

I think Gallopan will be out of the yellow tomorrow but a great effort by him and a really exciting stage. Kwia looked absolutely knackered at the end.

The T-A finish line looks a bit grim!

Ah missed the PN TT earlier, went as expected I guess.

They were lucky with the weather at T-A. Another 5-10mins of snow and they probably would not risk letting them race to the finish line.

Pretty heroic performance from Quintana in the circumstances, he can't have had much experience of riding in the snow. And great to see Adam Yates going head-to-head with Contador.

Quintana won the snow affected Giro last year. On the Stelvio visibility was bad but he rode around red flags: http://inrng.com/2014/05/the-fog-of-war-stelvio-giro/

Sam Bennett came in last thirty-five minutes after the stage winner. A few late riders complaining on Twitter about being expected to finish the stage in the deteriorating conditions: https://twitter.com/philmaertens/sta...522025984?s=09

Looks like Stage 1 ends with a 3km 6% climb out of Ruthin to set up a 30km chase undulating down to Wrexham. Looking at the squiggles on the map they are sticking to the A494 and not taking in the scenery of the higher pass Bwlch Pen Barras: https://youtu.be/7T_shm_Ya38?t=10m50s

The relocated finish line for tomorrow afternoon's Milan Sanremo is half a kilometre nearer to the top of the Poggio. The shorter flat hands any escapees a marginal benefit over the chasing sprinter's group:

Most pundits have it as most likely coming down to a sprint showdown between Kristoff, Cavendish and Sagan, though a number of riders are in the mix.

Rain in the morning clearing for the afternoon atm.

Sky not staying upright again - but it has given them a gap.

Always surprises me sprinters to so well in thus race, it's pretty lumpy. Wouldn't bank on one tidy either

Thomas and Oss will be reeled in soon, another climb coming but Cavendish still there.

Bunch sprints are so dull.

Desperately close for Kristoff. Paolini did too much work on the final climb to provide a long enough lead out at the end.

Cavendish pushed his chain off near the top of the Cipressa. A failure similar to T-A Stage 1 that put Viviani on the tarmac. The chase back (when the moto camera showed him) meant he lacked energy reserves later to follow the lead group accelerating up the Poggio.

Some intrigue about which chainrings Cavendish used:http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/...chances-163185

From the moment the Sky rider fell and split the chase, I thought it was gripping, unpredictable racing right to the line.

Tour of Catalunya starts today.......

2.30 on ES

Sky appear to be sending the backbone of their likely grand tour team - Froome, Porte, Roche, Suitsou, Kiryienka, Konig with climbs almost every day. There's a category one in the middle of todays stage.

Carlton and Magnus in the box......

3 man break ..........plenty of kilometres after the climb for the peloton to get back together for a possible bunch finish

no live pictures yet.........

still no live pictures..........they've gone back to showing a recording of Milan-San Remo from yesterday

'transponder problem' apparently........
swingaleg
23-03-2015
Live pictures came on about 40 minutes after the programme started .......just in case you've recorded it (but then you probably won't read this until after you've watched it)

we missed the climb.......

Just switched on. Looks like the breakaway is going to win the stage and the GC for someone. That's if the gap of around ten minutes is genuine...?

yep.........peloton have messed this up

race could be over today
swingaleg
23-03-2015
gap is 6 minutes 55 seconds with 17K to go.......

Pierre Rolland is one of the 3 in the breakaway

It's going to make it a more interesting week than I first thought it would be anyway. Enough climbs still to come for Froome and Contador to catch Rolland...maybe.
swingaleg
23-03-2015
the 3 guys are playing tactics for the stage win.........and the peloton are smashing it to cut down the deficit

could be down to 2 or 3 minutes at the end.......

which would be doable given that Rolland usually has a stinker somewhere along the line
swingaleg
23-03-2015
2 minutes 40 at the finish.........probably not enough for Rolland to win the GC
swingaleg
24-03-2015
no live pictures from Catalonia again......

they're showing Milan San Remo.........again !.......
swingaleg
24-03-2015
if you've recorded.......the live pictures come on about 65 minutes into the show.....

and Degenkolb won Milan San Remo again......
