Villumsen is guaranteed yet another medal - which colour will it be?
van der Breggen just 2 and a half seconds slower - only Brennauer to finish...

Linda Villumsen is the women's elite ITT world champion at last!! Silver for Anna van der Breggen, and Lisa Brennauer wins the bronze!

What a race that was, great to see Willumsen get her gold at last.

well done the Kiwi !

Hayley Simmonds finished 26th.

Simmonds finished in 26th place on her WCh debut. She would have hoped for better, I'm sure.

What a great finish that was - less than 10 seconds separated the top four. Fifth place for Armstrong, which makes her the top American.

GB will not have 2 berths in the women's Olympic ITT, but should still to be able to claim one by virtue of a top-15 UCI world ranking on 31 May 2016 as long as Armitstead continues to do what she does best.

For completeness, the podium order was NZL / NED / GER.

-----

The elite men will have tomorrow to themselves. Likelihood is that we will have a victor from Down Under or another 4-time world champion when all is said and done - I'd be surprised if anyone else claimed the rainbow jersey.

Contrary to what was originally thought, there will two (not one) Brits involved; the aim for Dowsett and Cummings is to put GB in the top 10.

Looks like great weather for a bike race - not a cloud to be seen, and from what I've heard the conditions aren't expected to change.

It's a point-to-point course, so no breaks this time - just a single wave of 70 riders.

For what it's worth, Michael Hutchinson reckons Dennis will take it. So did Chris Boardman (in the Cyclingnews podcast).

Apparently Dumoulin has pulled a glute, so he'll be riding through the pain. Bronze medal is up for grabs - Kiryienka might be the most likely to take that opportunity.

Quaade loves his moustache!

Cummings has left the starthouse. Bialoblocki started two places after him.

Apparently Matt Stephens (one of the Eurosport commentators) was in the 2012 Olympic starthouse and therefore saw Sanchez's chain snap in close proximity! No start issues this time.

Hepburn is the first rider to chunder along the homestraight and sets a solid time as the first starter. He's completely spent.

Apparently the Chunder from Down Under is a popular ad-break replay on CyclingHub...

Bialoblocki is the fastest at the third checkpoint so far; Cummings isn't far behind.

Phinney is on the course. And so is Dowsett.
Edward_Sloley
23-09-2015
Cummings is the second leader of the race, pipping Hepburn by 31 hundredths. Bialoblocki smashes that by 36 seconds less than 3 minutes later!

Top 5 seeds getting moving, starting with Malori. Dennis follows.

Kiryienka departs...as does Dumoulin, painful glute and all.

Martin the last to start - the race is on.
Edward_Sloley
23-09-2015
Top three at the first checkpoint are Kiryienka, Martin and Barta. I've no idea how Dennis is performing ATM.

Coppel is 72 seconds ahead of Bialoblocki at the third checkpoint!

Dennis and Malori close to the lead at the second checkpoint, until Kiryienka went through almost 25 seconds quicker!

Dennis suffers a mechnical!!
Edward_Sloley
23-09-2015
Martin and Dumoulin only 6th and 8th at the second checkpoint - top three are Kiryienka, Malori and Coppel. Still a long way to go, but I wasn't expecting those three to be leading...

Dowsett is slower than Cummings at the third checkpoint. Oh dear.

Coppel smashes the lead by 55 seconds at the finish!

Kiryienka is not riding in an aero position on a false flat for some reason.
Edward_Sloley
23-09-2015
Kiryienka fastest at the third checkpoint, but Malori reduced the deficit to just 10 seconds. Coppel's time could win a medal, maybe even the stripes!

Who on earth would have predicted that top 3?! I sure as hell didn't!!

Looks like Malori may be the top dog; he's gaining on Kiryienka and Coppel!

Dowsett is a few seconds slower than Cummings at the finish.

Dowsett finishes........currently 9th but will drop out of the top ten as others riders come
Edward_Sloley
23-09-2015
Malori 17 seconds quicker than Coppel - it's either him or Kiryienka for the stripes!

The men's elite ITT world champion is...VASIL KIRYIENKA!!! By 9 seconds!

Where the hell did he pull that from?!

Kiryienka is going to win !

Oh well........if it's not a Brit it might as well be a Sky rider......

Great ride for Vasya! Won it on the climb. Dumoulin looking knackered, don't think Dennis would have won anyway.

14th place for Cummings (very good), 17th place for Dowsett (somewhat disappointing). Only 1 berth in the Olympics for GB this time as top 15 in the 2015 WorldTour is secure.

Adriano Malori wins silver, Jerome Coppel wins bronze.

Podium order is BLR (!) / ITA / FRA

Phinney finished in 12th place, which was just enough for a top-10 nation Olympic berth - he'll be happy with that, if not his position. Bialoblocki was 9th, right behind compatriot Bodnar in 8th.

Took their chance when the favourites failed to perform.

Mind you the top 3 did have some form and Kiryienka has medaled before.

What do you reckon will happen in the Road races?

One for the sprinters?
Edward_Sloley
23-09-2015
Yeah - the hardy sprinters, anyway...so the likes of Kristoff and Matthews, or maybe even Greipel.

Armitstead and van der Breggen fancy their chances as well, though they'll have to keep an eye on the likes of D'Hoore.

Back to today's ITT - apparently riding for Team Sky at the age of 34 is a recipe for rainbow success, seeing as Wiggo did it last year!

Dumoulin beat both Martin and Dennis - you'd have thought that would be worth a rainbow jersey, not fifth place!!

After all the work he's done for Sky, Kiryienka has certainly earned his own success - victories in the WCh/Giro stage/Euro Games/NCh ITT this season!

More facts from yesterday's results:

* All three nations on the podium only had one prior medallist
* Neither SUI nor GER made the podium for the first time in 17 years
* Martin's 6-year podium streak was ended
* Kiryienka is the latest rider to have won individual world titles on the track & road
* Second time since 2004 that a podium featured neither Cancellara nor Martin

Tony Martin's shorts after the Richmond ITT. The anti-slip compound applied to his saddle went awry and turned to a sandpaper-like finish : https://instagram.com/p/7_5g3Fk6Ou/

Just what he needed to go with missing out on a medal. :|

Road races start today - full list of British riders here (except that Adam Yates rides in place of Thomas and Cav - the ninth elite men's berth looks like it has been discarded ).

Junior women start at 3pm - you may recognise the name Grace Garner, as her sister Lucy won this race in 2011 and 2012. I've no idea what chance she (or anyone else) has, though.

The U23 men start at 5:45pm - the squad is pretty strong, and there is talk of Doull being a contender. The Ewan v Gaviria rivalry won't start here as neither rider is entered - the former is ineligible as a full-on WorldTour rider and the latter has a knee injury.

Looking ahead to next year, Doha 2016 finally has its own website. It is set for 9 - 16 October, thereby taking place after Il Lombardia.

I think he has a chance, he was consistently top 10 over all the different stages of the ToB

Chloe Dygert and Emma White repeat their exploits and make it a USA 1-2 again! Agnieszka Skalniak (POL) claims her second straight bronze medal,* with Kajihara Yumi (JPN) leading the first chasing group across the finish in 4th place and Grace Garner was the first Brit there in 7th place.

Dygert is the third junior woman to do the RR/ITT double after Geneviève Jeanson (1999) and Nicole Cooke (2001). The host nation is having a great championships!

[* Both the ITT and RR bronze medallists repeated their positions from last year]
