The road course looks a lot harder than the TT course, there are some nasty cobbled Belgian style climbs in mid-lap.

One and a bit laps to go........

Unless someone can get away on those climbs on the last lap it looks like we could be in for a bunch finish

Surely a group will get away on those climbs ? - they look hard enough to split the peloton

Brits beginning to show at the front...........along with most of the other main countries

Atrocious OB coverage. If its the light drizzle causing these problems, then the rain forecast is likely to cause much cussing for the two main events on the weekend. Even the Vuelta can do better than this on a mountain.

I seem to remember that ES abandoned coverage of a US race after a couple of stages.......was it last year ?.....citing poor picture quality

and noticably this year they've not covered anywhere near as much of the US and Canadian races

the French man holds on after getting away on the climb.........

It's a 1-3 for FRA as Kevin Ledanois takes the spoils ahead of Simone Consonni (ITA) and compatriot Anthony Turgis; Doull finishes in 93rd place after being held up in that crash.

Those small cobbled inclines proved to be quite decisive in the rain - it all went to hell on that first incline. If the weather forecasts hold true, we're in for some more selective races this weekend!

Fourth place went to the Italian, Gianni Moscon, who Team Sky confirmed signing on Thursday. They have also confirmed their signing of Michael Landa (Astana) and Benat Intxausti (Movistar) - cue pronunciation videos. One more name to be released but not the best kept secret.

The course is not too demanding. Steady rain should provide more predictable conditions than yesterday. http://wtvr.com/weather/maps-and-rad...ractive-radar/

Junior men started racing at 2pm; the elite women will follow at 6pm.

There is an article on triple world champion* Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, who certainly fancies her chances of keeping the stripes today.

[* And she's still only 23!]

Felix Gall (AUT) claims the win ahead of a fast-finishing Clemont Betouigt-Suire (FRA) and Rasmus Pedersen (DEN). Nathan Draper was the first Brit to finish in 8th place.

Armitsteeeeeeeaaaaaaad! Worrrrrrrrlllldddd Chammmmmmpppppiiiiiooooonnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant last few km. thought she'd blown it missing the breakaway but came back perfectly. That home straight was surreal. Looking around waiting for the charge to the line, plenty of time to get in the right gear for the sprint, and only vanderbreggen came past to lead her out. Get in there!

Bring on the Vos! Olympic rematch next year. Got to be a close one to call now if both are at peak fitness on the day.

Absolutely brilliant finish.........she seemed to be idling in front to borrow a term from horse racing.......but she had a stone in hand !

She seemed to be willing someone to lead her out and someone duly did.......it's like she was pulling all their strings

My face when I went to the BBC Sport website and noticed the result on the ticker -> ->

Elizabeth Armitstead will be wearing the stripes throughout the Olympic season, like Cav did in 2012 - how awesome is that?! Her Boels teammate Megan Guarnier (USA) won the bronze as well, which is great news for their trade team.

It's a silver double for Anna van der Breggen (NED) in Richmond. Superb consistency by the reigning champion of the only women's Grand Tour, but she'll probably be frustrated - Lizzie leapfrogged her to the overall World Cup as well a month ago.

I didn't see the live broadcast, but I got to the internet feed in time to see exactly how the last lap panned out - that breakaway was doomed as soon as the Dutch pack decided to chase their own teammate.

Incidentally, today's result means that both women's Commonwealth champions are now world champions in the same disciplines! Oh, and the last time GB didn't medal in this WCh was 2009; the next such year is at least another year away.

The elite men have been racing for a while now, and still have a long way to go. It's times like these when you realise just how rare it is to see live coverage of an entire one-day race or stage for seven hours.

GB are still looking to put Swift into position for a sprint from a reduced bunch, but they're not backing him all the way (like Cav in 2011) - to be honest, him winning would be a shock considering the quality of his opposition. Sutton has also publicly touted Yates as a 'surprise' option (he was second in GP Montreal, which admittedly was raced on a harder course in atrocious weather).

I can't help but smile a little at the sight of Phinney in his home WCh after what happened to him last year.

Feed zone fail - one rider falls and the peloton splits.
