And a reminder that the Tour Down Under starts on Sky next week, highlights of the pre-Tour classic race on Monday afternoon, then live stages in wee small hours of the morning throughout the week.

Team Sky's season programme is taking shape.

Thomas is starting with the TDU, less of the spring classics than last year, and targeting top ten in the Tour while supporting Froome.
Landa is riding T-A, Giro and Vuelta.
Kwiatkowski is riding the spring classics MSR, Flanders and LBL. Also, hoping to ride the Tour to develop as a future GT rider.
Froome starts in Australia at the Herald Sun Tour as start of the campaign for a third Tour. He is confirmed as riding the Ruta del Sol in February where he beat Contador by a couple of seconds last year:

I'm not going to watch the TDU live at 2.00AM........

I've had a look through the Radio Times for next week and it doesn't appear that Sky are showing any repeat of the overnight stage during the following day.......with 5 sports channels to fill I'd have thought they'd have jumped at a couple of hours replay of the overnight coverage during the next morning

But the only thing I can see is 30 minutes highlights the next evening........which probably isn't worth watching by the time you take out the ads and the waffle

Starting next Monday, the Tour San Luis is on YouTube at a more reasonable time of 8pm. It may only be Spanish commentary but the riders names will sound the same. Hopefully the pictures will have improved compared to previous years. I will probably catch the last half hour or so of the seven stages that finish around 9:15pm.

GB results on the second day in Hong Kong:

Gold in the men's team sprint. Expected considering the opposition, but man three was still a shocker.

Silver in the women's team sprint, as expected. Same in the women's team pursuit; still a good result as Emily Nelson replaced Trott in the final.

Bronze in the men's team pursuit - a good result for the youngsters especially as they went sub-4. Germain Burton rode the event instead of Cav today; squad also includes Kian Emadi as he has switched from sprint to endurance events.

Brits did little of note in the men's keirin and women's sprint (save perhaps Marchant earning vital points with a 6th place finish).

-----

Both omnium comps are at the halfway stage. Trott heads major rival Sarah Hammer by 2 points after winning another elimination race; Cav is currently 6 points off the podium after strong performances in the scratch and elimination races.

Decent performance by Kenny as well to claim bronze in the men's sprint; the Brits did nothing of note in the women's keirin.

As for the men's omnium, Cav remained in 4th place - a decent result in his first omnium amongst global competition (including a good flying-lap), but his points race wasn't as good as his other mass-start performances. The selectors have quite the conundrum to settle as far as selection for London and Rio is concerned.

In the Olympic track programme, there are 9 berths in the team sprint - up to 5 can be awarded to Euro nations.

The men are currently 4th (both overall & Euro) in the Olympic track rankings, so they're on a thick knife-edge. The women are currently 9th overall and 6th amongst the Europeans, so they've got it all to do.

Team sprint qualifiers also get 18 berths each for the sprint & keirin (2 per nation). A further 9 berths in each event are awarded to the best of the rest in those particular rankings (again, up to 2 per nation) but it's not something BC will want to rely on.

Both endurance squads are in a significantly better position as far as Olympic qualification is concerned.

-----

Today, the UCI have published the allocation of berths for the men's road programme.* As expected, GB have earned 5 berths in the RR and 1 berth in the ITT.

Berth allocations for the women's road programme will be announced in June. Dani King is doing her bit right now as she's currently 4th in the Women's TDU (same time as leader Katrin Garfoot) with just 1 stage to go.

Aviva have pulled out of their sponsorship of the Tour of Britain. The women's race in June will be the last to bear its name leaving this autumn men's race lacking. http://www.tourofbritain.co.uk/news/...p#.Vp6MviqLS00

This year, race coverage will overlap with the para-olympics following on from saturation coverage of the Rio games. A new big sponsor may be hard to find.

First team to land to a pro win* this season is EQS in the aforementioned TTT. Since then, a winning sprint each for Ewan and Gav.

King has stated she is seeking selection for the Olympic road race after winning the KoM () classification. BC are working on the assumption they won't be top five in the women's world rankings at the end of May (there's only so much one person can do, unless they're Marianne Vos!) so the likehood is there will be just one berth up for grabs by anyone not named Armitstead or Pooley.

First Brit to get themselves listed in the men's world rankings is Chris Lawless, who won the first stage of the New Zealand Cycle Classic. Hopefully we'll soon know if the rankings will be used to decide qualification for the 2016 WCh.^

[* International champs or races classified at .1 or above]
[^ The current system of qualification via the WorldTour etc is rather complex]

Both TSL and TDU stages tonight have significant short climbs and descents immediately before the finish shifting the race focus to the GC.

OPC have been awarded their first wildcard invitation to a WT race, which is the Tour de Pologne. All of the big names (more or less) will be in the TdF instead, so there will be a great opportunity to claim a stage win - not least for Bialoblocki (who pipped Kiryienka in last year's ITT).

The TDU's Old Willunga Hill delivered an exciting battle on its final slopes earlier this morning. Time to see if the Aussie domination of the GC and stages could be broken. Will bonuses count more than winning margins? Worth catching the last 25km.

TSL marred by a big crash in the final 30K. Rider ahead of peloton hit something in the road and completely lost it as the speeding peloton ploughed into him. Most of Movistar and EQS came down with many others. Three definite retirements. Worst is Movistar's Malori who is reported to be in an induced coma. http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/tour...sh-on-stage-5/

Alistair Campbell (TB's former aide) tweeted watch this from around 11:25: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...ri-22-jan-2016

Gav also out with a fractured arm. Colombia are second in the Olympic TR for the omnium, which might allow him to give the WCh a miss if need be.

Update on the Giant Alpecin crash injuries from John Degenkolb:

Quote:
“I'm doing well under the circumstances. Earlier, the wounds on the thigh, forearm and lip were sewn under general anesthesia. Now I'm in the ambulance on the way to Valencia, where in a larger hospital my left index finger to be restored. He was hanging on the last corner on my hand. At much I can not remember. Also the other guys all the best. I'll get back. Thank you for your support.”

One of other five taken to hospital has worse, but not life threatening, injuries.
