Oh dear, that is very sad news
David Duffield was very much the voice of cycling as I was getting into the sport in the mid 90s. He was a delight to listen to filling the long stages with stories to pass the time. I think some people got tired of hearing his stories......
Like the day he supplied the bikes for the film shoot of Queen's video with all the naked women riding bikes......or his tricycle escapades Lands End to John O'Groats or his car breakdowns in the Alps
Some of his sayings were terrific.........as the riders crested a mountain and began a tricky descent which looked dangerous 'turn your granny to the wall' !.........and the way he called Central European Time as 'Eurosport time' for the benefit of GB viewers.
He always seemed a bit out of sync with the modern world and never quite got to grips with broadcasting technology although he loved to recount with wonder how the pictures got from the camera bike to your telly.
Many, many more........there was a whole website dedicated to DD's saying and stories but last time I checked it had disappeared
I thought of him as a one man TMS.......I'm sure that on at least one occasion he covered a whole six hour stage on his own after the co commentator got stuck somewhere...........
RIP Duffers.........and thanks for the great memories !
