Oh dear, that is very sad news

David Duffield was very much the voice of cycling as I was getting into the sport in the mid 90s. He was a delight to listen to filling the long stages with stories to pass the time. I think some people got tired of hearing his stories......

Like the day he supplied the bikes for the film shoot of Queen's video with all the naked women riding bikes......or his tricycle escapades Lands End to John O'Groats or his car breakdowns in the Alps

Some of his sayings were terrific.........as the riders crested a mountain and began a tricky descent which looked dangerous 'turn your granny to the wall' !.........and the way he called Central European Time as 'Eurosport time' for the benefit of GB viewers.

He always seemed a bit out of sync with the modern world and never quite got to grips with broadcasting technology although he loved to recount with wonder how the pictures got from the camera bike to your telly.

Many, many more........there was a whole website dedicated to DD's saying and stories but last time I checked it had disappeared

I thought of him as a one man TMS.......I'm sure that on at least one occasion he covered a whole six hour stage on his own after the co commentator got stuck somewhere...........

RIP Duffers.........and thanks for the great memories !

No stage wins for Thomas in the Volta ao Algarve, but his consistency nets him the overall again; Sergio Henao just missed out in the Colombian RR (won by Edwin Avila, winner of the 2014 WCh points race), but it's enough to raise him to third in the world rankings.

Sky have been busy this season, having clocked 27 podium finishes (including 9 wins).

Schedule and BBC coverage for the 2016 Track Cycling World Championships in London from 2nd to 6th March:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/35542039

Will be a good indicator of how well Team GB stacks up for Rio. Not sure there will be any race with GB starting as favourite, which seems odd considering how well they did in London 2012. Maybe the wheels have come off, and aren't as round as they were in 2012.

So sad to hear this news. Always remember Duffield's commentary of the Kilo Final from the 2000 Olympics when Jason Queally won. Very historical moment in British sport - the moment Lottery funding revealed itself.

I remember that quite well for some reason (and watching Chris Hoy win the same event in 2004 in the work canteen!)

Is that why they got rid of it..

I bet Cavendish really will be motivated to win an Olympic medal given almost everyone else has!

Yes, he's like Paula Radcliffe or Jimmy White. Legends who never won an Olympic medal (or WC for JW) despite being the world's best by a long way.

Still there's time for Cav. Just hope he gets it right and has some luck. I've a feeling we'll need all the luck we can get with medal hopes on the track.

Very sad to read all of the tributes to David Duffield over the last two days, he really was a giant of the sport. It turns out he even bought BMX to the UK, something he was very modest about during his marathon commentaries. The footage suggests otherwise and there's a whole generation of us who can thank David for this foresight and vision around cycling. Video of David Duffield at the first ever UK BMX race

I can't say that I've got much interest in rider data and rider-cams to be honest.......the data is not that interesting if it's stuff like power output or watts or heart rate

And once you've seen a couple of rider-cams would you be keen on watching any more some time after the race?......I don't think I would

I found the second of the company's goals to be more interesting.......'Aggregating the rights of 11 of the biggest teams to improve the financial stability of the sport and thus benefit their staff and riders'

I take this to mean that the top teams will negotiate en bloc with the UCI and Broadcasters

Is this a de facto takeover of the sport by the teams ?

I like the idea of using bike cameras, but only in moderation and only in addition to the motorbike, helicopter and static camera shots. For example, it would be exciting to see a fast descent from a rider's point of view.

The season steps up a gear this weekend with the first televised race from the Low Countries......Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, which might be described as a semi-classic or classic trial. (Sunday 2.00pm Eurosport).

I think it can only be medium difficult because Cav has won it a couple of times as well as the usual Classics men,. Boonen has won it 3 times

After all the sunshine in Southern Spain, the Arabian Peninsula, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand etc let's hope for Mud & Cobbles........

KBK has moved up to HC category this year with a tougher profile. Cavendish is preparing for track selection (DDD are not in the race):

The winner of last year's memorable #OHN, Stannard, is not competing, targeting the later, bigger cobbles races instead. Terpstra, Boonen and Vandenburgh will return for EQS. The largely unseen threat of the catch by Van Avermaet and Vanmarcke played a decisive role in the outcome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcJ5Qq3OhuE

Armitstead will open her season in the women's OHN on Saturday, which boasts no fewer than 33 (!) teams.

Here is the full list of competitors in the Track WCh (note that Archibald will not be competing after all):
Men / Women

Seems like Gav has recovered from last month's crash and will defend his omnium title; here's why Cav might have to sacrifice one of his major goals whether he wins an omnium medal or not in London.

Staying with the event, its event director confirms the choice to bid for a pre-Olympic WCh was planned from the get-go (remember that 2015 was still available when 2016 was awarded).

Right, that gives me the chance to see if the Set Record option on my mobile phone actually works....Channel 552 on Virgin.

Be interesting to see who does the commentary on the Bike Channel live coverage......

I don't suppose there's any guarantee that it will be in English as a pan European but Italian based channel

On the other stuff I've seen they've got that aussie guy who often does world feed commentaries, can't remember his name.

Bit of an inauspicious start.........blank screen followed by a clip of an old documentary about the Sky Team physio, followed by blank screen following by the race coming on with Italian commentary.........and now we've gone to English commentary

I recognise the voice........I'm sure he does Eurosport commentaries

I can't tell the difference between this and Eurosport for picture quality.......

occasional picture freeze but that happens on ES as well.......probably just the nature of a live road race going under bridges and so on

First race in the stripes, first win of the season for Armitstead. And she did it solo.
