Becky James gets bronze in the kierin behind Vogel and Mears
Should be happy with that coming back from injury..........a good tactical race going up the inside. |

Yes, great night already. Fantastic to see Becky James back after such a long injury, showed a real cool head in both her races after it looked like she was boxed and Trotty just never lets us down!!
As usual the BBC showing blethering rather than action. |

I also record the cycling when it's on BBC and then start watching half an hour in. In that way, I can fast forward through Clare Balding's pointless appearances. Quote:
Just how good is Laura Trott?
As exciting as her elimination races. |

She's pretty new to the cycling because they were grooming Jonathan Edwards to be the track cycling presenter but he's jumped ship to the Discovery Channel Clare is asking the questions that occasional viewers might be asking about how the keirin and pursuit races work and so on.........track cycling is still pretty rare on the main channels so a lot of people might be watching who haven't seen any since the Olympics The Beeb do like to have a presenter who isn't an expert in the sport but who can ask the experts on behalf of the viewers.......... here we go.........pursuit final ! |

Oh geez another shocker.......
after being down from lap one they clawed it back in the last 3 or 4 laps, took the lead on the last lap then dropped the 3rd man 10 yards back which cost them the race....... |

Crikey. Didn't expect it to be Rowsell that couldn't keep up with Trott and Barker.
Maybe we shouldn't expect them to be on top form if they're aiming to peak for Rio. Aussies 'struggled' in fourth and they are or were head and shoulders in front of everyone else not long ago. GB are missing an injured (yet to come back) Katie Archibald too so maybe all isn't that bad for Rio and we'll still be a gold/silver contender. Exactly the same issue just now with the mens. If you could clone our top 2, we would win. |

Must say I enjoyed being back in the velodrome today (I went to the Paralympics last time).
Regarding men's TP, AUS always looked the smoothest throughout the rounds, so their victory wasn't a surprise to me, even with Wiggo in beast mode; winning time (3:52.727) was a continental record and the third fastest ever ride, so GB keep their WR. With a fully fit Clancy, a successful defense in Rio is still on. Women's TP - the fact Roswell-Shand was in third position when she was dropped cost GB a top-4 qualifying finish. USA really showed something - they produced a continental record (4:16.180) and the second fastest ever ride; they'll face AUS for a place in the gold medal race (by coincidence, that's what they did in London 2012). Women's scratch race - I screamed myself hoarse in the last couple of laps. It was just the tonic Laura needed after that TP disaster; it was also 4 years since she last won an individual global title. Given the form she's in, her next one could happen in 3 days' time. Women's keirin - a copy of the podium in Cali 2 years ago. Meares doesn't quite have the raw speed she had in her heyday, but has the nous to beat anyone who isn't called Vogel (whose tactics are like those of Chris Hoy - win with sheer power). Considering her injuries in 2014/2015, James's bronze was unexpected, TBH. Men's kilo - with three-time world champion Pervis giving the event a miss, it was basically Eilers' race to lose. His winning time (1:00.042) is a sea-level best, though I was hoping for a sub-60. Bos has certainly returned to great form after his flirtation with road racing; I wasn't expecting Crampton to be within a tenth of a medal position, so credit to him as well. |

Trotty hits the big time with a large front cover photo on tomorrow's Daily Telegraph
She's a fantastic competitor but she's also a force of nature........I reckon Jason will be right under the thumb........ ![]() I think we can all guess who wears the lycra shorts in that house !.......

Stunning win by Laura Trott. When Boardman, a man who knows a thing or two about track racing, says she wasn't going to get back in contention with only 5 laps to go and was still what seemed almost half a lap behind going into the last 3 laps, I was feeling a bit gutted for Laura, not a good day at the office.
Then she not only closes the gap almost on her own in about 1 lap (at which point Boardman was saying she wouldn't have anything left in the tank for the sprint) but goes to the front, gets a lead out and holds them off for the win. I'm not sure I've seen a better come back to win by any rider in recent years. Balding was right after the relatively poor first day when she said "I suppose Laura Trott is the headline act for the women now". She always was. ![]() Great to see Becky James get the bronze. If she can stay injury free and get the training right she might have enough form to beat Vogel in Rio. I liken James to Pendleton and Kenny, not just a powerhouse like Mears and Hoy, but has a bit more leg speed and endurance so can go for longer finishes and hold them off. Both our team pursuit squads need a bit of polish and more fitness, both massively affected by injuries that should resolve itself for Rio. Gutted for Clancy. They'd got a nose in front for the 2 splits before the last lap but Clancy ran out of steam on the last lap. A gamble that didn't pay off bringing him back for the one race. If he gets back to his best I can see why Wiggo is so confident they can win it in Rio. Though Dibben dropping off early so Clancy had to be man 3 to the end didn't help. Maybe some of the squad is struggling for form to peak for Rio. |

Woah - Kenny and Skinner are both top-5 in the men's sprint qualifying round.
Kenny (=2nd with Hoogland) was just a thousandth slower than top qualifier Glaetzer, who clocked 9.766 for the flying 200 (track record still 9.713). Glaetzer's first opponent will be Bos, who just made the cut in 24th place with 10.047 (top 18 went sub-10). |

Fastest qualifiers in the men's individual pursuit are Filippo Ganna (ITA) and Domenic Weinstein (GER) - they're in the gold medal race later tonight. Doull & Tennant both made the bronze medal race, so GB are guaranteed a medal tonight.

We have guaranteed bronze!!! in the men's individual pursuit tonight - Andrew Tennant and Owain Doull will ride off against each other. Some foreigners or other will ride for gold, so an opportunity for Clare Balding to chat for another 5-6 minutes instead.
Jason Kenny and Callum Skinner both about to go in the Round of 16 in the match sprint....Jason Kenny through to the quarters, beats Edward Dawkins of NZL!! Callum Skinner beats Gregory Bauge!!! Also, Mark Cavendish went earlier in the first event of the Omnium - 6th in the Scratch Race. So a pretty good morning all round. Next action 14:30. |

That's a major scalp for Skinner. That said, Baugé could still face Glaetzer or Kenny in tomorrow's quarters if he wins his repechage heat. (He does.)
Been a while since 2 Brits made the men's sprint quarters in a WCh. |

But the BBC like Clare, as she can; "talk bollox with authority," presenting events about which she knows nothing. (Like the Winter Olympics board coverage, her first attempt at that was cringeworthy. No homework done, so she treated it as a bit of a joke). She didn't disappoint last night. Hence her comment that; "Laura Trott won against women twice her size." This penchant for dumbing down some of the coverage of specialist sports, will sadly always be with us. |

This penchant for dumbing down some of the coverage of specialist sports, will sadly always be with us. I suppose the BBC are trying to appeal to a wider audience, though Claire did acknowledge on the first day, when it was red button only rather than BBC2, that it would only be hardcore fans tuning in. I found it funny when she seemed more enthusiastic about Pendleton's first horse racing win earlier in the day (fair enough she is from a horsey background) than the cycling. Trotty did look almost comically tiny compared to Wild and Roorda that were on the podium with her. Epitomises 'punching above her weight' and why she's something special. |

Victoria Pendleton at 5' 5" is only an inch taller than Trotty. Of course Clare wouldn't know that. Contrast this with the BBC Davis Cup coverage, where most of the time, they all know what they're talking about. |

GB Team Pursuit ladies - 4:16.350, which is the fastest time so far by about 10 secs, 2 heats to go.
And we beat NZL's losing time, so qualify for the bronze ride-off. Annoyingly, we also beat Canada's winning time....Just USA v AUS next. NZL lost by only .003! So USA look favourites for Gold, set fastest time of all 4:14.806. GBR v NZL for bronze, and we are about 2 secs faster if we don't stuff it up. GBR's time was a British record. |

Tonight's women's TP gold medal final will be the first in global championship history* involving neither GB nor AUS. No fewer than five nations have broken 4:19 (!) today - it wasn't even three years ago when GB looked to have the event sown up by a margin when the 4-man format was introduced after the 2013 WCh.
Atmospheric pressure is currently pretty damn low, which is partly responsible for these crazy fast times - 4:18.559 by AUS wasn't even enough to make the bronze medal race! Their WR could be broken, too. [* Admittedly, it made its WCh debut within the past decade - 2008, to be precise] |

Cav struggling in the omnium, only 13th in the pursuit, down to 9th overall. Needs a couple of wins. Elimination race tonight.
