Vogel wins the bronze medal in straight rides.

Zhong Tianshi beats Junhong Lin in straight rides to become the first ever sprint world champion for China. The second race was quite emphatically won.

Just the men's madison left now! Will it be a repeat of 2008?

An old head on young shoulders, as I said earlier, she wasn't bothered about Hammer beating her in the elimination race. Hammer "busted a gut" each time to stay in, so Trotty was in much better shape for the points race, which she "owned from the gun."

Well done!

Who on Earth do Britain take to the Olympics to make up the male team? Talk about a difficult choice!

Yeah, have to admit I was a bit pessimistic going in, but clearly the team are working their old magic again - some people on top form, and others not far off it. The only real weakness in the team is the women's sprints, but if Becky James can stay fit even that gap will be filled.

Who would have thought GB would finish these champs the way they did after the first day?! I think it's fair to say the potential medal haul in Rio looks better than it did back then, though it'll 'merely' be respectable and not a replica of 2008 & 2012.

Spare a thought for the French - last year, they delivered on home soil during what was basically a belated Paris 2012, and GB were nowhere. This week, they've swapped places.

22 nations in all won medals, of which 11 won rainbow jerseys.

The total haul for GB was 5G 1S 3B - the best since 2013, in which it was 5G 2S 2B.

-----

No fewer than EIGHT nations won rainbow jerseys in Olympic-class disciplines at the World Championships - to put this into context, GB dominated those events in 2008, and were co-dominant with Australia in 2012. This year, there was no monopoly or duopoly.

Regarding GB, they won 5 of those medals (2G 1S 2B); their haul was bettered only by Germany as they have an extra bronze.

After a slow start an excellent return from Team GB.

Trott will be one of the stars in Rio.

I wonder if Cavendish will be picked now?

Unless Dibben gets injured, I doubt it. They need a strong fifth man in the TP, and Cav isn't that.

Mind you, the Aussies also have a little TP conundrum of their own as O'Shea is a proven WCh omnium medallist (heck, he almost won the damn thing yesterday) but hasn't been in their TP group for the past year or two.

Dumoulin was told during a post stage interview Matthews had beaten him. Let's hope his mother was not watching : https://youtu.be/Eutrarrylxk

P-N's Queen stage next Saturday with a 15km uphill finish. Final stage has dropped the traditional Col d'Eze ITT and instead has a long inland loop from Nice. When it returns it doubles back up the ITT route before descending to the sea front finish line.

Only 1 minute gap over first 165 riders: http://www.procyclingstats.com/race/..._2016_Prologue

Anna Meares' record of 11 world titles may well be beaten in a few years, assuming she retires after Rio. Whether it's Trott (7), Vogel (7) or Hammer (8) that gets there first is another question.

-----

The average speed in that madison race was a staggering 57.277km/h. That's even faster than the short 120-lap version that Mark Christian and Doull won at the World Cup meet in December 2014.

Today made it 7 / 3 track titles (plus a road title each) for Wiggo / Cav respectively. Funnily enough, their successful lap gain was started at almost the same point as in 2008!

Good to see Kenny and Trott back as world champions. As Laura said, "only took 4 years!". Looking good for Rio as long as they manage the next 5 months form wise so peak right.

Annette Edmonson and AUS team pursuit will be strong challengers if they get back to their best. Can see it being a battle between Trott, Edmonson, Hammer in the Omnium and GB, AUS, USA for the team pursuit.

Hope Becky James makes the team. If she's on the upward trend back to top form I can't see how they'd leave her behind. Varnish and the others just haven't filled the gap in James' absence since she took over as World Champion since Pendleton retired.

Feel for Cav, no madison at the olympics so can only see him making the team as a reserve in case first choice gets injured or isn't on form, but that's not going to help Cav with the road season.

Rob Hatch and Sean in the comm box for Paris-Nice

40k to go and cross winds causing splits........echelons beginning to form

Four sections of chalk/stone.dirt road in the last 20K

Pretty remarkable achievement by Sean to win this 7 years running in the 1980s........before i was interested in the sport but I think I knew his name

For cryin' out loud, she's a twenty-three year old who has spent all her teenage and adult life cycling. She's no airs and graces, quite self effacing off the track. But on it she's a brilliant tactician.
What's so "incredibly annoying" about that?

Can only be the Essex accent. No biggie. Tip for TSR, avoid TOWIE, you really wouldn't like that.

Hmm. Where did Matthews pull that victory from? Nothing to do with spending the last 2 months in South Africa away from 'out-of-competition' testers I suppose?

The final Olympic track rankings for 2014-2016 have been released.

In the women's TS, they confirm GB collected 964 points in comparison to 967 for France, so they missed out on a berth by three points. I've tried working out if they've got berths in the women's keirin/sprint, but it's beyond my capabilities...

Edit - the people updating the Wiki page on Olympic track cycling qualification believe the GB women have 2 sprint berths and a keirin berth. If confirmed, this is good news.

The lad's a Frenchman.......

Just seen the podium from yesterday and Demare getting his jersey. When they gave him a bunch of flowers he picked out a red one and presented it to the dolly-bird podium girl

what a smoothy........

Did he bump into Boswell and Froome out there?

In my view, the best means of winning on that prologue course was to be more familiar with it than everyone else. An urban route with speed humps, cobbled patches, tight corners and junctions, undulating grade, and so short it is almost over before a rider gets going.

Yesterday, after all that work by Stannard and Rowe, Swift took off too soon in the sprint. Not sure why no other teams were interested in maintaining the split in the competitive half of the peloton.

Watching today's highlights now to see the Bouhanni brouhaha.
