Turned out very exciting, won't give away too much for horse racing fans who are catching up. Adam Yates got one of his best ever results, considering the extremely elite company he was in.
For whoever wants to know:
Spoiler

Also worth mentioning Jon Dibben came second in today's U23 RvV (part of the Nations Cup). It'll be interesting to see what he and Owain Doull can do on the roads post-2016.

In the post-race press interviews, it appears Contador has withdrawn his decision to retire mainly due to his form so far this season. With Tinkov ending his sponsorship, Contador's associates are looking to sign up major corporate sponsors for a new Spanish team. Realistically, a decision is required before the Tour where many of next season's rider contracts are informally finalised.

Decent looking last 10 km here, glad to see a breakaway has made it. Thought Boonen's days were behind him.

I wouldn't' mind a Stannard, Boassen Hagen 1-2.

Be good to see the five enter the Velodrome together though.

Stannard has gone for it.

Oof, hell of a race. Well done Ian Stannard, third time third for a Brit.

I thought Stannard had that when they were playing cat and mouse up front. He did well to get third from Vanmarcke. EBH got very close on the bend too but had nothing more.

Hayman was 800/1 to win that. None of the Top 6 in the betting ended in the Top 10.

Bit of bad luck for Sky having two crashes in a minute, Luke Rowe would certainly have done a bit more whittling down the opposition if he hadn't had to make up the ground after crashing.

what a brilliant race !

you know they have 'the usual rules' for breakaways...................a minute per 10K

It doesn't work in these races !

it seems fairly regular that you get a small group with a minute lead and they hang on for 50-60K or more...................

Doesn't appear to be any live cycling on Eurosport this week but the Bike Channel has another of their 'Flanders Classics' on Wednesday.............the Brabantse Pijl at 2.00PM

Ben Hermans won it last year and the previous few years the winners included Gilbert, Sagan, Voeckler, Chavanel, Boogerd, Oscar Friere won it 3 years running

No, I think that the Amstel race is their next one.

Bonkers race, thought Stannard had either got the break, or blown up about 5 times I'm sure. Would of been epic for him to have sneaked through, with Boonen & Hayman looking at each other on the final lap. Worthy winner as always in the PR, no wheel sucking here.

I've never watched that advert from the Bike Channel before.....they mention a few upcoming races like the Tour of Alberta, Tour of Romandie, Tour of Burgos, Tour of the Fjords.......looks like there might be a lot more racing on the channel than I thought.....

Another motorbike ploughing into riders: https://twitter.com/r8uge/status/719200478475743232

A Trek Segafredo rider lets them know what he thinks. Vivianni remains quiet after a close call.

Looking at other disciplines, Liam Phillips deserves a mention as he won the Manchester round of the BMX Supercross World Cup for the fourth time in succession. Add that to his back-to-back overall WC wins in the past 2 years (including 3 rounds in 2015) and he looks to be a title contender in this year's WCh and Rio, touch wood; Kyle Evans also made a WC podium for the first time.

In women's downhill (not an Olympic discipline), world champion Rachel Atherton started her latest season as she ended the previous with a win at the opening WC round in Lourdes; compatriots Tahnee Seagrave and Manon Carpenter also made the podium.

Phillips and Evans have been selected for next month's UCI BMX World Championships in Medellín (25-29 May), as has junior Bethany Shriever. It marks the end of the Olympic qualification window (which also includes another WC round in Papendal).

As things stand, GB are fifth in the men's qualification rankings, which would be worth 2 berths; the top four nations get 3 each, so that's their aim. Doesn't look like the women will qualify this time.

99K to go as we join the race

lots of short sharp climbs.........the route basically goes around the south of Brussels in a rough semi-circle with a lap at the finish
