Varnish will not be reinstated to the Olympic podium programme: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/20...ramme-olympics

Hopefully the Giro GC race will kick off on the next, penultimate climb. Only notable events so far seems to be the retirements. There will be more than a few riders struggling with the elimination time later. http://static2.giroditalia.it/wp-con...vara_alt-3.jpg

Not heard of Preidler before though he has been in the pro peleton since 2010. He is headed for the biggest result of his career. His last top level performance was another killer climbing stage in the Giro in 2014 up Mt. Zoncolan.

So dangerous. Stray horse during the 1997 Criterium International.

What a wonderful Giro stage today...

What a wonderful Giro stage today...
The race really livened up on the Passo Giau. After a slow stage start, the pace Astana set was high for the grade. I believed the break was safe for the stage win with a nine minute gap but it was all but gone with 20km left.

The way the GC group splintered was surprising. Nibali seems to believe he is still can do what he did in his younger days but now lacks the punch for riding away. Again, he seemed to need to recover after the initial gain leaving him open to a counter attack. He still sustained a high steady pace once recovered. Perhaps he should stick to riding conservatively? Notable that Valverde did not attempt to follow Nibali.

There are only a dozen left in the GC fight. Seven and a half minutes separates Jungels and thirteenth place, Pirazzi. No eliminations for late finishes but 50 riders finished three quarters of an hour down on Chaves! That is averaging only 31 kph. http://visualvelo.com/giro2016.html

It's the ideal day to look up races you've never heard of before - today, there are TWENTY-FOUR UCI-classified road races across the spectrum in session.

Impressive performance by Kruijswijk in the ITT. His upper body barely moving like he was on the flat instead of a steep 8.5% grade. Now, he is looking like the man to beat in this race.

Frustrating for Nibali losing his chain before pulling off his rear derailleur. Shame that, in his frustration, he did not land a decent blow on those pesky runners.

It's been a red letter day for British road racers, what with Daniel McLay beating Bouhanni to win the GP de la Somme, Thomas Stewart winning Velothon Wales and Scott Davies winning Stage 4 of Ronde de l'Isard. McLay is arguably our second best sprinter ATM.

When was the last time 3 Brits claimed professional victories in races classified .1 or higher on the same day? (The last race is 2.2U)

On another subject, berth allocations for Olympic events (excluding track and men's road disciplines) will be decided during the next 10 days.

A complete change from what was seen over the weekend. The top of the first climb on Saturday's Stage 20 this evening: https://www.periscope.tv/w/1eaKbwLmnydGX

Sadly, IAM Cycling team is shutting down at the end of the season after failing to find a co-sponsor to share the expense of running a WT team.

Cannondale say Uran's Giro performance has been affected by bronchitis over the past few stages.

Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of the first Operation Puerto arrests. Today, Valverde takes a stage.

Athletes usually hit their physiological peak at 26-28. At 36, Valverde is racing more miles and scoring higher than he did in his twenties.

I did wonder why I was bothering with this Grand Tour, too many dull sprinters stages in the first two weeks.

Today was nothing short of amazing.

Sean said that as well, "oh lucky it was only snow". Not a bit of it, that was sheet ice, like concrete. Great stage. People mump and moan about Sky, but that today just shows what happens if you try to win a Grand Tour with a Pound Shop team. And what a scunner for the Dutch, second Grand Tour in a row where their guy has collapsed on the final weekend after looking like being in an invincible position. And looking like a first ever win for an Aussie team!

No great surprise that the less prestigious Grand Tours get UCI WorldTeam 'B' squads.

Off we go on what could be a dramatic day's racing. Kruijswijk is riding on, but has a broken rib after his argument with the iceberg yesterday.

Things starting to look unexpectedly good for Team Sky as Mikal Nieve (whose name, appropriately, means Snow in Spanish) looks like he is on the way to the King of Mountains jersey - out on a solo run, picking up big points.

Oh dear.
The motos have outdone themselves in Stage 3 of the Baloise Belgium Tour:
Stage abandoned after motorbikes cause big crash
On the plus side, Lizzie won her sponsors' race for the second year running. Also notable in that Vos was in that race as well (4th place for her).
