The last Olympic cycling qualification window is now finished - looks like Team GB will have three berths in the women's RR and one in the ITT, and it was pretty much thanks to one person.

In the past year, Lizzie's points tally from winning the WCh RR and 5 WWT/WC races (not including results from other qualifying races like the Omloop!) is more than double the combined tally of the 4 next best Brits.

Will Lizzie do both or just concentrate on the Road race.

I know Froome is doing both I think.

RR only. Pooley (the best British tester on hilly terrain by a fair margin) wants one more crack at Olympic ITT gold; barring an unforseen disaster, that sole berth will be given to her, which means she'll be required to do the RR too.

Here's the breakdown of quotas for each nation.

Sky have a pretty strong team for Dauphine,
Chris Froome
Sergio Henao
Michal Kwiatkowski
Mikel Landa
Wout Poels
Salvatore Puccio
Luke Rowe
Ian Stannard

Looking forward to this weekend

Pooley will not want to overly tire herself in the Sunday RR to be fresh for the ITT on the following Wednesday.

The problem is we just don't have the female equivalents of Ian Stannard or Steve Cummings who are going to plug away for years at an unglamorous job. Lots of them retire in their mid-20s when they find out they're barely scratching a living.

Tejay Van Garderen has said he doesn't wish to be considered for selection for the Olympics because of his concern over the Zika virus

his wife is pregnant and he's worried about bringing the infection back if he contracts it

Reminder that this is due to come on ES at 8pm......the women's race followed by the men

The circuit is an area of London I know well.......east of St Pauls and between Cheapside and London Wall. Adds a bit of interest to the coverage !

Back in the 80s when I first started watching the Tour de France that was about the level of the prizes for stage wins.

A bit later in the commentary they said that either the first prize or 'the prize fund' was a thousand quid

They pointed out that the 8th place finisher got £30

Carlton said he could sponsor it.........

Could be an interesting prologue in the Dauphiné today........only 3.9K but it's uphill all the way with an average of nearly 10%

Should cause an earl sort out in the field

As mentioned earlier Sky are sending what will probably be their Tour team

early start on ES.........12.30

I doubt that will be the tour de France team, they usually have some in the tour de Suisse too, I would expect Thomas to be one of them.

Prologue's predicted speed under 10mph.

Start order is jumbled with Froome off at 11:45 BST shortly after Pinot. Poels off last just after Contador and Porte at 13:35.

There could be an upset on times should the weather turns wet; impossible to keep the back wheel from spinning on slippery roads on a 15% grade. Dry and overcast at the moment as the first riders are off.

Should mention that ITV4 also has the Dauphine, but evening highlights only. Channel 4 Cymru aren't bothering, though.

Poor Sam Bennett, five minutes down and the race proper has not started: http://www.pelotonwatch.com/results/.../prologue.html

Prologues were introduced just to put the leaders jersey on the back of a rider for Stage 1. The time spread today has ended some riders GC chances early.

Chris Opie claimed his first professional victory by winning Stage 2 of the Tour de Korea. That makes it 5 wins for OPC - can they get to double figures by season's end?

-----

Dani King took 7th place in the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic - her best WWT result to date, and noteworthy as she was riding for Wiggle teammate Elisa Longo Borghini (who was 2nd behind Megan Guarnier). Olympic selectors will hopefully take note of that performance.

Emma Pooley continues to excel as a multi-sport athlete, having come 2nd to world champion Daniela Ryf in the Ironman 70.3 Switzerland. She will now focus on securing selection for the Olympic ITT.

-----

Can anyone beat Rachel Atherton this year? She won round 3 of the DH World Cup in Fort William, which makes it a record-equalling 9 consecutive WC wins in the event.

We saw why Sam Bennett took it steady yesterday. It was Bennett's early kick that impeded Kristoff's acceleration and, as a result of his wobble, Bouhanni closed off any chance of Kristoff competing for the line. Not sure what Froome was up to taking it up with Katusha? Some wags have suggested the sprint tussle owed more to Tyson than Ali.

Good viewing times for the Olympic RRs; Men's race on 1.30 - 8:15pm on Saturday and women's 4:15 - 8:35pm on Sunday 7th.

Lively Dauphiné stage today!

British National Championships competitors announced: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/ro...hampionships-0

In Rio, Sagan will compete for Slovakia in the MTB race, instead of on the road.

Saw the women's Matrix Fitness Grand Prix race and the men's Pearl Izumi Tour race around the centre of Croydon tonight.

It wasn't completely packed apart from close to the finish line, and Jason Bradbury of the Gadget Show was there watching as a VIP if I remember.

Grace Garner pulled off an excellent sprint finish to win the women's race, and Nikki Juniper finished third to steay the overall leader in the series.

I also had the camera with me, so some pics from the women's race tonight:

The highlights of the men's and women's races are on ITV4 at 8pm tomorrow (straight after the Dauphiné if I remmber correctly) so two hours of cycling on the bounce
