Wouldn't it be great to see him beat Mercks' record. I can see that happening now.”

Can't believe you spelt The Cannibal's name incorrectly. For shame

That's the biggest breakaway I've seen since the 2012 Olympic men's RR. When was the last time a breakaway included the yellow jersey?

Also worth noting that all 198 starters have made it to the seventh stage, which has never happened before.

According to live tracker Mardones (conf) has done 18.4% of the work on the front of the breakaway over the last 40Km, talk about leaning on someone.

Dimension Data seems to have brought the best out in Cummings and Cav

Incredible attack from Steve, this isn't some group of randomly selected domestiques he's taking on here, it's some of the best in the world.

Blimey, looks like he has broken Nibali!

Pinot in trouble, can't hold onto a moderate peleton speed. {Insert Pinot Noir joke here}

See Pinot was getting a helping hand from a team mate till he got caught on camera, bloody cheats

Quick yell on the team radio from the guy watching TV in the team car, no doubt.

Flamme rouge collapses!!!! Riders attacked by giant spider monster from space! I presume they will take the time splits from the last measured spot, at 3km.

Race radio says they have the times with 3km to go

Overhead pictures of the peloton show the km arch collapsed before they got there...but it took Adam Yates off his bike.

Never thought I'd see the day Cummings outclimbed Nibali on a mountain pass, although the latter being dropped by Impey clearly suggests he's out of form.

Don't think they are taking the times from 3km, Yates is being shown has having lost 4 minutes, which is absolute crap, because he was some distance ahead of the peloton before the arch fell on him..

I dont think the official stage results are right, they have Yates finishing over 3 minutes behind the peleton, no mention on his twitter about the times yet.

Yates' time has been amended and as a result wears the white jersey: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/tour...-banner-crash/

Quote:
“COMMISSAIRES STATEMENT: A technical incident occurred the red flag. The rule of the last three kilometres, as stipulated in the U.C.I. regulations, was applied. The official ceremony to award of the white jersey of overall leader of the young riders will be held tomorrow on the podium signing of Pau, in which Adam Yates will receive the white jersey.”

Four stitches in his chin along with other cuts and bruises.

Cummings' win heightens the question about the judgement of the Olympic selectors. Dimension Data must be getting quite a bang for their buck with four stage wins.

Great news for Adam Yates. The problem is the selectors are all Sky men, or bought and paid for by Sky, so they can't see past a Froome win using Sky Train tactics. There's no way Cummings would be a team player, he'd be riding to win.

Cummings would have very little chance of winning on the Rio course. He won today because the favourites had no interest in todays stage. The Olympics is a one day race and Cummings best results have come in stage races from breaks when already down on GC.

I'd have Cummings in my Olympics team but its right for British Cycling to build a team around Froome with Yates (ormaybe Thomas) as plan B.

Cummings rode for Cavendish in the 2011 World Champs while he was at Sky and Cavendish was with HTC. I doubt self-interest or professional team loyalty has any real bearing on Team GB events. There is no Cooke / Armitstead style smouldering conflict evident here.

I do not recall any discipline or loyalty issues at Sky, BMC or DDD. Normally he is known as quiet, solid and reliable rider. Are there any examples of him baulking team instructions at any time? Do you expect Sky riders become awkward about leading out Cavendish in Doha because he is also a DDD rider?

An interesting end to today's stage. Good to see Cummings add onto Cavendish's successes and tomorrow looks like a good stage and I can see it live.

Also got Thursday off for the Ventoux stage so I am looking forward to a day watching both cricket and cycling. Better than work.

I was a bit disappointed to Equipe's dismissive attitude to Cavendish's achievement.

Speed heat map of yesterday's sprint showing Kittel went too early: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cm1YYdZW8AAEDZN.jpg

Cavendish clearly closely studied the finish: not easing through the corner, smoothly accelerating, and peaking just before the line.

Here's footage of the arch collapsing. Neither Yates nor the Mavic neutral service bike (from which the clip was filmed) had any chance of avoiding a crash in that scenario.

Armitstead has withdrawn from Giro Rosa suffering from illness, just four weeks before the Olympics RR.
