I dont think the official stage results are right, they have Yates finishing over 3 minutes behind the peleton, no mention on his twitter about the times yet.
And the corrected results now have Adam not only leading the white jersey comp - by only one second - but actually second overall! Seemingly there's going to be another presentation ceremony this morning before the stage start to give him the jersey formally. The incident was caused by a spectator accidentally [it says here] unplugging the generator that powered the spider with compressed air.

Must be a chance that Adam Yates could be in yellow tonight........if VA gets dropped and Adam stays with the 'group of favourites' who'll probably contest the finish or at least be close enough to any breakaway to take over the GC

ee blimey........Bury's Adam Yates in yellow.......

Yeah, think he would have to do it today because it's hilly with a long descent and flat leading into the finish, which his team can help him with. A mountain finish tomorrow will break things up more.

Cummings break. You often see this. One rider jumps away. The others shillyshally about chasing, and in the end no one chases.

Would they rather come a non chasing second, rather than Chase and come lower down?

Yes. It all depends on the chase group collaborating. One rider sets a pace and then moves over to let the others do their part. If one or more sits on, or takes easy turns, they benefit unfairly.

Get a name as a rider who gets duped into giving others a free ride, and prepared to settle for second place, then he can kiss any future wins from breaks goodbye. To win in future, the rider has to be prepared to let it slide away today.

Cummings' sleek stage winning bike: https://www.youtube.com/embed/r2mli7Xwfbc

One of the few pro bikes below 7.0kg. Take off the bottle cages and race number, and it would be right down on the limit.

The full compliment of 198 riders started today. It may no longer be the case this evening, especially with the stage starting off at 50 kph.

At that speed they will have finished the first climb before we get live pictures Although it may slow down after the intermediate sprint

13 man breakaway at the start of the climb about 30 seconds on the pack.

The Mavic mutual service bike that was brought down by the air bridge had an helmet cam, so hopefully we will get to see the footage later. What I have seen of it, it looks like Yates was helping to hold the air bridge up for the peloton to pass under.

Quite a select group in the main breakaway including: DE GENDT, Thomas (LTS), YATES, Adam (OBE), ALAPHILIPPE, Julian (EQS), VALVERDE BELMONTE, Alejandro (MOV), RODRIGUEZ, Joaquim (KAT), FROOME, Christopher (SKY), QUINTANA ROJAS, Nairo Alexander (MOV), BARGUIL, WARREN (TGA), ROLLAND, Pierre (CDT), MARTIN, Daniel (EQS)

Armitstead has withdrawn from Giro Rosa suffering from illness, just four weeks before the Olympics RR.
http://www.theguardian.com/sport/201...ycling-illness
She was there as a super-domestique for Guarnier and Stevens (1 and 2 in the GC as things stand), and she didn't finish last year's race either. On this occasion she might have wanted to win the last stage (which somewhat resembles the Rio parcours) but she still clocked plenty of hard mileage.

Pooley came 13th in yesterday's hilly ITT, so I can't see her winning an Olympic medal. If she feels the same way, she may well concede her berth as she's not going to Rio for the kit/village atmosphere/etc.
The Mavic mutual service bike
I doubt the big names have enough time for that.

Cummings would have very little chance of winning on the Rio course. He won today because the favourites had no interest in todays stage. The Olympics is a one day race and Cummings best results have come in stage races from breaks when already down on GC.

I'd have Cummings in my Olympics team but its right for British Cycling to build a team around Froome with Yates (ormaybe Thomas) as plan B.
In such a mountainous route set out for the road race I think Cummings would be a better choice than Stannard.

Cavendish and Eisel 13 minutes down on the peloton with only the ailing Mørkøv behind them.

Maillot jaune virtuel!!! Black puddings with big white bits and tripe all round in Bury!

Currently having trouble coping with the non-rainy and non-foggy weather, pours huge bottle of chilled water over his head.

I don't live up there now but look at the local paper online and they do follow 'the two lads'..........so I expect there's a lot of interest in the town

Talking of 'interest'........has anyone else thought that there is a lot less interest on the forum this year ?

Usually when the Tour is on we get a of newbies on the thread who only turn up for the Tour and often ask questions about how it all works and so on

But this year it just seems to be the thread regulars..........

has interest peaked ?.....

yes, that's possible........and Wimbledon

but I'd have thought there was something else on every year.......not just this year

Yates is hanging on the back of the main group but looks like he's giving his all to stay there and he might drop off on the final climb

Hang on, weren't those the same two anti-aircraft guns we saw yesterday? French Army bluffing as usual.

If Adam holds on he has done a heroic job, because as far as I can see he has not a single team-mate.

Nothing helicopter pilots love more than staging bombing runs along airstrips, seemingly.
