Yates might be in trouble for the yellow, but building a huge lead for the White.

Unbelievable. Brilliant, scary, and totally unexpected. And from someone some say can't handle a bike. Chris, you're amazing.

Well, that has got to go on the all-time great Tour de France stage victory list.

Cavendish was around 35 mins down still half way up the final climb. I quickly reckoned he has to come in before 44 mins or so.

You may be sure that Sky and Chris had rehearsed that at some point.

He might have to do a decent like Froome then

He says not. Just freelanced it at the top of the climb. I'm sure he must have practised that crazy cadence sitting on the bar though. I found it quite frightening to watch. The guy's a genius. A very brave genius.

Oh, for sure they must have wind-tunnelled that position.

Crass stupidity by Quintana on reaching the top of the climb Froome goes and he takes a drink and to compound his error he then lets 10 -12 seconds go waiting for Valverde. Brailsford is renowed for seeking every marginal gain you cannot relax. SKY have been trying out a number of tactics in the Dauphine so the Moviestar and BMC directors should have been aware and prepared. I was also surprised by BMC waiting until the last 3K to chase especially for Van Gardernen and a 10 second bonus for winning.

Sensational from Froome today. I hope Cav stays in.

Yes. Why didn't he chase straight away? I suppose he didn't realise what Froome had up his sleve and thought he could catch him up with help, although that is more difficult the more seconds you let slip away.

Some of the spectators deserve it, made me smile when one got knocked over by the camera bike in the Giro after running straight in front of him, he got up and the motor bike rider gave him lots of verbal

Looks like Cav is out.

Ohoh seems to have got into a big enough group to survive! About 40 odd riders outside the official time limit, they are not going to give so many the axe.

Here's the rules and regulations of the 2016 TdF.

Stage 8 is classified as 'Coefficient 4', under which the time limit is 15% of the stage winner's time when the average speed is 37-38km/h.

Approx. 4h57m for Froome means the limit (as cmq2 mentioned earlier) is around 44 minutes, so Cav is within the limit anyway.

-----

Froome took everyone by surprise with that move. That means British riders have won FIVE stages in the first eight, including three in a row.

Why didn't any of the commentary team know that?

I think they were looking at the wrong coefficient (#3), which would have led to a 13% limit (38 minutes).

Or 38 is the last number you calculate for an accurate answer of 44min38sec. Easily done when in a hurry and live on TV. They need Rachel Riley and her gridded whiteboard for those moments

Just realised that the Brits are now leading 3 of the 4 'maillot' classifications as well. The way things are going, this TdF could even exceed the heights of 2012 (though there definitely won't be a 1-2 in the GC this time).

When was the last time a single nation won 5 stages before the first rest day?

Hope there'll be no consequences. Suggestions in that tweet that people are already demanding his exclusion.

Don't these idiots know how much adrenal energy they give to a rider when they shout abuse?

On second viewing, maybe he wasn't abusing Froome. Just cheering Quintana and getting in Froome's way. Colombian football shirt.

They never do though, do they.? They look around waiting for someone else, and then it's too late.
