Just published, Team Sky's budget for 2015 was £24m, three quarters of which went on rider salaries:

What a great finish to today's stage.

Four top riders from 2 teams. Fortune favours the brave.

Brilliant.

(Bit rough on Cav, but even without his mechanical problems, Sagan beat the bunch sprint)

Froome looks shattered. It was a great spectacle but not sure if it was wise to get involved in that and expend so much energy for such a small gain. Just hope he's got something left for tomorrow.

It was only for a relatively short period, at his level of fitness he should recover fine over night.

Probably wont be has hard a day tomorrow if the wind speeds are too high

Crosswind stages are great viewing. Wonder if Cavendish will abandon now. There's a lot of mountains before the final stage.

Thursday's planned finish on top of Mont Ventoux has been cancelled because of high winds in Provence. The 12th stage will now finish several kilometres down the mountain at Chalet Reynard.

Looks like a 500m drop in the height to ascend to.

Wasn't Cavendish expecting television coverage of the race.? The guy's a complete t*sser.

Well, amazing bit of riding. If there's one thing the French admire it's panache and the willingness to attack from anywhere at any time, so if the crowds don't appreciate that then they won't ever like anything Froome does.

There a certain conventions and you don't normally see the cameras dwelling on blokes having a slash.

Just looking at it again, I reckon Sky had worked out that Sagan was going to attack - at 15.3km one of Sagan's men was about to launch an attack but missed his gear. Just after that, Thomas and Froome separated themselves from Sky, tucked in alongside Tinkoff and waited for them to try again.

And big praise to Nick and David Millar, they saw that something was happening long before Sean and Carlton worked it out.

Watching it again, Thomas had all on to connect to to the breakaway.

I really enjoyed it today.

We know Sagan is up for it, particularly on a day like today where "proper" sprinters would expect to win a bunch sprint, so he had to take them on early.

Everybody would know that he would attack, but only Froome and Thomas were prepared to go with him. Whodathunk that the yellow jersey would be up for it as well. Super defensive Sky have now turned the perceived wisdom upsidedown on two stages (and not big mountain ones).

And the other thing: my theory is that Movistar, as a Spanish team, are actually working for a podium for the Spanish no. 1 Valverde, and not for the win for Quintana. That's why he was isolated today.

David Millar is very insightful.

I am not missing the nameless two. so much.
They used to get the commentary wrong all the while, anyway

I think Froome has been amazing. He out-Saganed Sagan on Saturday. Plenty of riders do the crossbar straddling thing when descending, but I haven't seen anyone do it with that crazy cadence peddling aswell (rather unfairly referred to by Boardman as 'circus clown cycling'). And today was also very impressive by Froome, not just in terms of execution but being wise to the possibility of something like that happening. I wasn't convinced expending all that energy was sensible just for the sake of a few seconds, but it also has a strong psychological effect on his rivals. It also shows what great shape Froome is in for the ITTs. Hopefully he'll finally get the respect he deserves.

You gotta love Sagan too. Great rider, great spirit, great guy.

Four BMC riders in the chase group but not one seen on the front aiding the sprinter's chase? They cannot decide their leader or main objective. At least Movistar only had Valverde to help Quintana so have some plausible excuse once they had let their domestiques go.

With the Ventoux stage shortened, Froome will save around 400 kJ tomorrow. I doubt he would have expended anything like that extra, in twice the distance, over the flat run-in, in a four man break today. Still an expensive dozen seconds.

Profile of Ventoux with the Chalet Reynard revised finish point shown. Just under 500m reduction in the height climbed: http://www.jellejanvanveelen.nl/vent...oux-bedoin.png

Don't think I've ever seen 2 Brits and an Irishman sharing the top 3 GC positions in a Grand Tour before, though that will almost certainly not be the case after today.

Considering the number of bunch sprints we've had in the first week, the latest pair of stages have unexpectedly balanced the race out. OBE rode the crosswinds well and Yates gained another minute over Louis Meintjes in the youth classification.

Back in Poland, Gaviria won stage 2 and the stage 1 field sprint for second place so he's in great shape for the omnium (and still fave despite Cav's first-week haul). Probably would have won a stage in the Tour if he'd been picked for that instead.

According to a tweet from @itvcycling, coverage on ITV4 will start earlier than scheduled today (Thu 14-Jul-16): 1pm instead of 2pm. Presumably this is because of the decision to omit the summit of Mont Ventoux, the race will finish earlier.

With more crosswinds there's also likely to be plenty of action before the final climb.

The history is that these kinds of unexpectedly truncated stages often produce a lot of drama right from the off, with the main contenders not just the rabbits trying to get an advantage. I remember a classic stage in the late-90s where Bjarne Riis (unfortunately so doped on EPO that he was lucky not to explode like a balloon) put an end to the reign of Miguel Indurain on a stage cut in half by snow.

(Looked it up: Bjarne Riis riding for Team Telekom on a stage to Sestriere in 1996)

That was my first Tour that I watched live on ES all the way through.......I'd just left my job at the end of May 1996 and was starting to work for myself from home but had no work in until I got established........looking around for something to fill the time and noticed the Tour de France on Eurosport !

The stage that you mention might even have been one I recall........a big flashing sign appeared on screen 'Indurain Lashé' !...........I went out and bought a French-English dictionary so I could pick up the cycling terms !
