On the first climb, some of the bends had foam mattresses folded up onto the handrails. Cheap, imperfect solution but at least would have gone some way to reducing the impact of any crashes.

Same with Porte's crash yesterday. The timber posts holding the crash netting needed wrapping in foam.

Glad she seems to have fared a lot better than the crash initially suggested. Could easily have been fatal with the nasty way she hit the curb and tree.

Gutted for her, pretty much guaranteed she would have won gold if she had got round that bend ok. The chasers only just caught Abbott and Van Vlueten was leaving her behind and was looking good for staying in front.

Looked like the corner same place GT crashed. He's lucky he seems to be one of the few if not the only one to crash on that descent and not come away with broken or fractured bones. Speaks for itself on how irresponsible the race organisers were and can understand Boardman's anger at the risk they placed the riders in.

You know that last climb is brutal when Vos and Armitstead struggled. Strange how it suited the pure climbers in the womens better than the mens and they 'only' went over it once. I suppose that's the physical different highlighted between male and female. If Pooley hadn't eased off to save more for the time trial she may have been able to stick with the leaders over the top and been in medal chance on the run in to the line. Disappointed with Nikki Harris not making any noticeable contribution. Dani King surely would have been a better choice. Coincidence Harris is in same professional team as Armitstead?

Yes. Excellent news considering how terrible it looked. Badly banged up with some fractures and other injuries but it looks like Van Vleuten will make a full recovery. I've no doubt she would have won if she'd stayed upright.

The crash reminded me of someone in my local club who was killed earlier this year when they landed on their head and broke their neck. I feared a similar fate for Van Vleuten.

The technical decent turns needed hay bales, lots and lots of them. Mick Bennett described the course as unsuitable for any road race. I thought the basic course was a good test of physical strength, technical skill and judgement, similar to a XC MTB course. The bidons being slightly too small and bouncing out of the cages on the cobbles was farcical.

Regarding van Vleuten's injuries, sounds like she very narrowly avoided being paralysed at the very least. Three spinal fractures but no mention of any spinal chord damage. Significant cerebral trauma too, but no mention of any permanent damage.

Just noticed Froome is no longer fav for the TT. I guess Dumoulin's recovered better from his broken wrist than expected. Also Chris didn't seem to hold much back in the RR.

Not sure how much of the time trial we will get to see, according to the EPG it isnt on any of the olympic channels, so will be limited to BBC 1 coverage.

Geraint Thomas will be ridding in the time trial because some riders have pulled out apparently.

Interesting Sky interview with Cavendish today on he eve of track events: https://www.youtube.com/embed/GHK5V8LV8O0

On riding the Omnium only (not the Team Pursuit), Wiggins stressing, road races and Armitstead's missed tests.

What about the Dutch guy who was favourite for the event - he still in?

If you mean Tom Domoulin, then yes the last I heard, http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/...rt-list-272682

Here's a better start list with start times for both men and women http://velonews.competitor.com/2016/...t-lists_417702

Dumoulin only lasted 10km in the road race. He cannot be blamed for not wanting to go near the cobbles with a weakened wrist.

Only 25 entries in the women's ITT that includes Emma Pooley.

Dan Craven's ITT, utterly hillarious tweets. Kudos to him for just going out there and riding for the sheer enjoyment of it (following a Twitter poll). No TT bike, no tri-bars, no disc wheel, a basic aero-ish helmet, no special skinsuit...

The notion that the track is too new and wrong shape for world records didn't last long.

Hugh Carthy has been confirmed to ride his first grand tour at Vuelta 2016 for Caja Rural. Cannondale have signed him for next season.

Froome's numbers in a scientific paper (pdf download): http://journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/Ab..._de.97426.aspx

Perhaps it's slipped by a bit un-noticed but if you fancy some regular road racing the Arctic Tour of Norway is on Eurosport

Kristoff won the first stage yesterday and leads GC

Sky and One-Pro both have teams entered

According to the TV Schedule they appear be showing about 4 hours live coverage today from just after mid-day

I missed the first hour or two of the race in Norway but apparently ES are showing the whole 198K stage........and the whole of tomorrow's Queen stage

Obviously they need to fill the time whilst the Olympics are on !

Am I right in thinking that anyone taking part in any round in the team pursuit gets a medal?

if so it's really churlish of GB not to give Cav a ride in round 1

i am not sure about medal distribution.

I know they have prepared for Gold and breaking the WR over three to four years. Last night was the trial run and we will see them build on it later . They need a faultless performance to win and set the record. Familiarity with the track is essential and juggling riders to share medals around sounds a little complacent. As the Netherlands proved last night, it only takes one slight error to end in catastrophe.

Cavendish only dropped out of the Tour early to prepare and did not dedicate as long as Houvenaghel did four years ago. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/19147279

On the road, Trek Segafredo have the cheque book out following the signing of Contador and Pantano, they have now announced the signing of Degenkolb and de Kort.

Not churlish at all. If GB wanted/needed a strong back up rider for the team pursuit Cavendish would not be in Rio at all and Dibben would be doing the Omnium. Cavendish should stick his toys back in the pram and concentrate on his own event.
